Kilimanjaro replied to GameHauler's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Can I start call you Grey&Grizzled Rabbit now?? It just seems so much more fitting. Happy birthday!! -
SA-WEET buck dude!!!

great buck!!! Dare I say that i'd rather have him anyday than some rinky dink coues?? Hmmm, maybe I'll just keep that to myself...
-

-
redneck, tell your boy that I trained him really well with lead treats!!
-
Great trophy... just one thing to add.. should you decide to start your own colony, you MIGHT want to consider not doing it in the tack room...They'll eat leather like no tomorrow should they get loose!!!
-
Should it happen, and I hope it does pretty soon, I'll be sure and let all ya'll know about it!!
-
Thanks for all the kind words, guys!!! I appreciate it. Doug, I'd like to go ahead and enter my kill into the CWT contest under the heaviest weight division and of course, the biggest spike contest. I think I'm a shoe in!! Foundry man, go ahead and please PM me for my address so you can get that bronze shipped to the rightful winner.. Should I be moving back to AZ real soon, which I hope to be, (long story.. real estate doldrums), I'll be sure and have a CWT get together and we'll cook some bison steaks on the grill at my casa in Tucson!! I sure have enough for everyone!

Kilimanjaro replied to IHunt2live's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
sweet pics and a great looking group of pups for sure!! I can't wait to get back down and chase those mearns.. I've been known to give 'em heck a "few" times each season!!! -
my Grandad (Dad's dad) is 80 and he still gets out in the west TX sand country and chases those blue quail with his dogs.. even after a double knee replacement a few years back.. he even manages to hit a few while he's out there!! he's a tough old codger for sure..

Albuquerque is pretty far north of coues country, but I gotta say I think I've got you beat!! I live in Cut Bank, Montana!!

Do any of you guys here on CWT own a Shiloh Sharpe's rifle?? I have wanted to buy one for years now, but I just haven't parted ways with my dollars yet.. I think they are one of the most beautiful guns ever made. Just spectacular! When you hold one, you just feel like you are holding the past and a real American icon.. they feel amazing in your hands! They symbolize our past in this country and were a steadfast tool in "taming" the west.. I'm using one next month up here in MT on a trophy bison hunt we've got planned. It's an 1874 Creedmore in blackpowder 45-70. I've got a feeling that is gonna be a mistake!! I'm probably gonna HAVE to buy one then!! Anybody else?? http://www.shilohrifle.com/

K, most of the modern "old" guns will handle mondern loads.. I know the Shilohs will.. but most of those blackpowder guys will scoff at ya for shooting modern loads out of a classic!!

DAMN YOU, Mr. Hun!!!
Kilimanjaro replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Well guys, instead of starting a whole new topic, I thought I'd just share a few pics from yesterday and today with all of ya.. Yesterday, we went out with the intent of finding a few roosters.. so we hit a new spot that looked pretty good, but didn't see the number of birds I thought it would hold..saw a few, but not in numbers like I've become accustomed to up here.. I scratched down 1 rooster that made the mistake of holding just a bit too long!! here are the two mutts with that bird within nose range.. I got off the shot about .5 seconds after I snapped this pic!! trophy shot!!! Today we woke up to HORRENDOUS winds.. not the most ideal conditions in anyone's book. Basically, it sucked. But with only 1 more week of season, I figured we'd better just get out there and get on with it!! So with that, we made our way out into the winds for a morning Hun hunt and an afternoon rooster hunt.. first stop, a huge chunk of CRP that's been known to hold a covey or 2 of those pesky Huns.. We had been battling the winds for about 45 minutes when I looked up and Penny was locked down on a covey with Virgil honoring her point about 100 yards away from me.. I made my way over there ASAP, snapped this quick pic, and promptly missed with both barrels. My Hun curse continues to live on!! dang YOU MR. HUN!!! That was all we saw of the Huns today, so we made our way back to the truck, ate some lunch, and decided it was time to chase some Chinese chickens!! We made a quick stop by the farmer's house to wish them a Merry Christmas and to see where he's been seeing the birds.. We got the scoop and made our way to the section of the property where he figured there'd be birds in this kind of wind.. And the old timer wasn't lying.. when I closed the door on my truck, about 10 birds got up within 10 yrds of me..good sign.. I slipped around to the back of the truck to let the pups out and we started down the fenceline/ water ditch at a trot.. we didn't make very far.. probably 20 yards when a rooster busted thru the grass right at Penny's feet right when she began to get birdy .. 1 shot with the 20ga, 1 rooster in the vest.."not a bad way to start off!", I thought out loud.. Thats' when I looked up at the fenceline where we were heading.. at the shot there musta been 200 birds erupt outta that ditch.. it was the most birds I've seen his season at one time!! Amazing sight for sure!! We made tracks downrange as fast as we could in hopes of catching a couple more roosters who had'nt vacated the premises with the others.. we were in luck.. 50 yards further, BAM! 'nother rooster down.. slipped him into the vest and repeated ourselves again.. down the line we go... 100 yards, penny slams on point, a flash of green heads and long tails.. I regained my composure, and drew down on the last of the group to come out.. And with that, we had our limit!! We were'nt gone from the truck 5 minutes!!! It was a just one of those days!! Here's Penny with that 1st bird..we weren't 30 yards from the truck! I was fumbling with the camera and with the bird when I looked up and saw all those birds in the air at once.. Quite a sight!! and here's the "5 minute" limit for the day!! this old International made for an interesting photo.. ...the "hanging on the old barn" photo!! Merry Christmas to all of you on CWT!! -
can't go wrong with them.. I bought mine 4 years ago, and use 'em almost everyday.. I carry them at work with me!!

the last few day's outings...
Kilimanjaro posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I figured I'd share a slew of pics from the last few days in the chilly MT uplands and farm country.. The last few days have been pretty much a blessing when you consider where we now live.. Cold, yes.. but it's been completely calm lately with those flawless bluebird skies the west can be famous for.. highs have been around the 23-25 degree mark.. perfect conditions for the dogs and I to make a few outings before the next front pushes through.. (like tonight! It is WINDY and COLD!) these pics are in no particular order and contain pics from the last few days out... just figured ya'll would enjoy seeing them!! Our mornings have been typically starting out in this fashion.. Do ya'll remember the news article from 2 months ago of the MT guy who was phez hunting and got mauled by the Grizzly bear?? Well, it was right here, within a mile or so. This place has plenty of roosters, but plenty of BIG bears call this place home as well.. I was hoping NOT to run into any tracks.. With the recent cold snap, I figured they had gone to bed finally for the winter. But man, its it ever a beautiful place to hunt. Some of the areas other furry critters have been hard at it as well!! the pups sure do like it over there!! We weren't finding too many birds out that way, so we decided to bring it in about 20 miles from the moutains.. back in the irrigated country that those roosters just thrive in. ...and it didn't take long at all and we had a rooster pinned down hard.. ..and if you find a spot like this mixed in with your prairie and farm country, it would be wise to make a pass thru it!! As I took this pic, 3 roosters blew out within 10 ft of me!! Typical. Those pups have saved countless lost cripples for me this season.. They LOVE when they get to run down those lightly shot roosters!! the last few outings have been pretty fruitful when it comes to hunting ditch parrots.. including this Granddaddy rooster!! Yesterday, we went back out near the moutains again and gave it a go, but came up emptyhanded.. So, we crossed the river.... ...and headed back out to the irrigated pastures for roosters and the spralling CRP fields for sharpies that we've had so much good luck in thus far.. in this photo, you can see the mountains where we had just come from in the distance, the farm fields in the middle where we took a limit of roosters a hour beforehand, and now, we are on the high steppes where the grouse are in great numbers.. (Obviously!!) not too bad for a 2 hour outing yesterday.. thanks for lookin' guys!! -

the last few day's outings...
Kilimanjaro replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
ac guy, that is one of the nicest compliments a guy could get.. thank you. I just love taking photos and writing hunting related stuff.. i WISH i could get paid to do it for a living!! Or at least a good side gig.. I wish I had some grand big game adventure to write about this season, but since I just moved here to MT in Sept., all I have to do up here this season is pound on the local population of upland birds with the mutts till next season rolls around!! Doug (AZP&Y), hey buddy.. you still want some phez tail feathers for tying flys?? I've been saving you a handful and I'll get them in the mail to ya as soon as season ends up here after the new year if you still want some!! Just let me know!! -
nice pics Amanda!!
