Let it rain, let it rain... This has been a dismal monsoon season, to say the least.

Thank the Lord I have a wife who knew what she was dealing with when we got married.. As long as we do at least one thing of her choice per yr, she's happy. We went to Hawaii 2 months ago, so I'm golden for the remainder! As for hunts this yr, my season starts next weekend in central TX with a Fallow deer and Sika deer hunt.. End of Sept I have my muzz elk hunt here in AZ..Then I have the 2nd Coues hunt in 36C, then Mearns quail opens (eats up ALOT of my off time that time of yr!), potential MX coues in Jan, then we leave for Africa again next May 1st!!! Full season ahead.

What is this rifle worth? Pre 64 Win
Kilimanjaro replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I know what ya mean about resale value.. But had I got the gun and sank 5-600 buck into it to get it where I wanted it, I would have held onto it for the rest of my days.. I wouldnt sell a gun like that. Oh well.. Plety of them around still. -
If you are looking for a lefty, I have a '07 Ultratec I'll sell you.

Great looking bucks... I plan on doing that hunt sometime.

What is this rifle worth? Pre 64 Win
Kilimanjaro replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I offered him 750 for it, take or leave it, and he left it.. Felt he could get 1K with it online.. I felt that I was going to have to sink another 500 into into it just to get it where I wanted it. I wanted to get the whole thing stripped down, reblued, glass-bedded, nice new trigger job, strip down the whole stock and refinish it, and top her off with an old school cherry red recoil pad.. I would guess getting that done was going to run me AT LEAST $500 (do you figure that is ball park for that amount of work?) more into the gun jut to get it where I wanted it! Sure would like to have it, but not for 1K.. I think I could find one in much better shape.. Pity. I woulda taken her with me to Africa in May.. where she belongs! -
Well that's some bad news ScoutM.. I was about to make a post about looking for a good 'smith here in Tucson, I read the post above yours, then I read yours.. Were you able to confirm that? I hope it's not true.

I know that boy's dreams!! I still have them to this day the same as I did when I was his age! Double rifles, big bucks and BIG rams up in the crags!! Life doesn't get a whole lot better than that. You got that boy on the right path! Thanks for the post.. Made me smile!

Brett Favre is officially a Viking!
Kilimanjaro replied to Snapshot's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
I used to like the guy.. Now he's just a spotlight whore.. Retire already. What a waste of perfectly good funds, Vikings.. I like how Elway went out.. Day after the Superbowl he won.. Went out on top like a champ.. I feel for a guy like Marino when he got PUMMLED by Jacksonville 62-7 in his last professional game. Never won the big one. No respect (professionally) for Farve though.. -
Unfortunately, I think you've found him again... Bummer. Great buck.

AZ has a season on hunting FOX? I always thought that if you had a wild hair up your butt to go varmit hunting in the blazing heat of an AZ summer, it was your prerogative and you could if you wanted to?? Learn something new everyday.

I'm trying my best to amasse every map I can get my hands on before the upcoming elk hunt.. Have my hands on several, but several more can't hurt.. These look pretty good, and clearly shows the unit boundary of whichever unit you are hunting. Looks like they are made and sold here in AZ as well. Does anyone else on here use them/ used them? Are they worth purchaing? Just trying to see if any of you guys have used one and liked it before I buy decide to buy one. http://huntmap.com/index.html What about these hybrid maps (cross between arial photo with the topo lines superimposed on top of the photo map) from Huntin' Fool?? They look great, but you can't get them for the entire units.. They are only 8 milesX 8miles. I'm thinking of gettting a couple of these as well for the areas I think I am going to concentrate in. . Anyone use these and like them/ dislike them? http://www.mytopo.com/products/aerial-topo...?pid=huntinfool Thanks guys.

*HELP ME SCORE THIS BULL* @ i added a few pics for the skeptics
Kilimanjaro replied to justahunter's topic in Elk Hunting
Man, look at the seconds and thirds on that dude.. Wow.. Great beam length as well. Not much for spread, kinda weak in the mass, not much for length up top, but with all the non-typ... Man, I hate to throw out a number on this beast!!! Those non-typ bulls are hard to judge!! I'd give this bull 395-405 range with all that non-typ trash.. I'd bust him in a heartbeat. Hope ya get a chance at him. -
Guys, When I went to Zimbabwe this past Feb, I casted the tusks of my the biggest bull I took (all 3 bulls were non export trophies).. Got the tusks all finished and they came out AWESOME! The molds caught even the smallest scratches and nicks in the ivory.. They look as real as the real deal on the elephant! Now that they are done, I need to get some bases built and wrap the last 3" of the tusks covered in a copper base covering.. Ive found this photo and really like the wood and shape of these bases.. Do any of you guys know what kind of wood this is? I'm going to try and copy these bases pretty much to a tee. 2nd question... I am going to buy a thin sheet of copper and try to do the wraps myself.. Problem is, I dont know how to get that antiqued color into the copper and how to get the dimpled appearance into the metal.. Do any of you guys know a way to get that look without destroying the copper sheet? I'm no woodworker (wish I was!) and I am danged sure not a metalworker, so I am asking you guys how have any knowledge in these fields for a little advise! Here are the pics.. On the copper wrap, if you look above the part of the wrap that looks like a rope, I want the look ABOVE that area.. The rope and the flattened out area that connects to the wood dont look good to me. Just above the rope area.. the dimpled, aged copper. I like that.. Many thanks, Gents!
-
Thanks for the suggestions, guys.. I guess I will just buy a thin sheet of copper and practice before making a "real" one.. Thanks for the hints. That African Ebony striped wood is AWESOME!! Snapshot, just for a rough estimate, what would a base like the one I have in the picture run me in the various woods that have been mentioned in the thread? I'm thinking about maybe 6" (3"on each tier) high.. 7" at the highest..

Oh yeah, that's what I'm talking about!! 6 more weeks and I'll be chasin those brutes!

I grew up playing competitive baseball and it was engrained in my hard head that once a streak was started (hitting, wins, K's, etc) to do WHATEVER it takes to keep that streak alive.. no shaving, same unclean socks or underwear, or a million other little things we did in the dugouts and on the field to keep the ralley alive.. Well, I've never been able to shake that silly habit and to this day I will do SOMETHING before every big hunt... Sometimes I will start to grow a goatee, sometimes I'll ALWAYS have to have a particular pair of socks on, have a particular 10 peso coin in my pocket, etc.... For my upcoming elk hunt next month, my rally cap for this year's big hunt is I've started growing a moustache (and a DOOZY at that) that by the time the hunt rolls around, will rival Ron Jeremy in 1974. It's coming in nicely, handlebars and everything!! To say I've been catching flack from my co-workers and ESPECIALLY my lovely wife is an understatement!! But hey, its all for the betterment of my upcoming hunt and it WILL help put that big bull to sleep!! Anyone else got any crazy pre-hunt rituals that need to be shared?? I know hunters are as bad a group as baseball players when it comes to pre-hunt rituals!! Let's hear 'em, guys..
-
So..... where are we hunting this year, 25-06?? Now that's my kind of ritual!!
