Make you some mango salsa (sorry, no exact recipe but made with fresh sweet purple onions, mangos, lime, tomatoes, jalepenos) and then (lightly) grill some mahi or shark steak kabobs and enjoy with some ice cold Tecate or Dos Eqis.. Best stuff you'll ever eat.

A few Christmas weekend birds.. The weather smiled upon us this weekend. It was perfect for quail hunting. Got a single on LOCKDOWN.. a couple of mature males from a nice double from the Dakota 20ga.. a fresh covey.. "take your time Pop, I've got 'em pinned down for as long as need be.." a couple more nice males for the bag.. shoulda had a limit, but I crippled one and counted him as taken.. Oh yeah, another bobcat litty took a dirt nap.. -
I used to put in for oryx in NM for a few years.. I then found out that they're MUCH larger on average on their home range in the Kalihari once I went over there the 1st time. Haven't put in for them in NM since then.. Two day hunt with the mad dashes are just too pressured for me. Ibex are another story. This will be my 11th year in a row to try for a tag!

A few pics from today. The dogs made it really easy today. Had we not tried for the trifecta, we would have EASILY limited out on Mearns within 2 hrs of hunting. tryin' to find a covey of scalies out here in a place that has produced in the past.. All we found were tracks and a big herd of pronghorn bedded in the ironwood draws coming off the hills.. and here's one I forgot was still on the camera and didn't share.. Opening day of Gambels back in Oct.. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.. -
I'll be in Cloudcroft/Ruidoso for a week right after New Years.. I'll keep my eyes peeled while there. We used to hunt the Weed area for turkeys and there were always rumors of TX WTs having moved into the country.. Guess it was true!

Kilimanjaro replied to BRYCE CANYON's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Saw a ram that looks alot like this ram in the Red Hills.. the big chips on top were the sign. Congrats to the hunter on a great sheep -
Good reply, Bill... I wasn't trying to throw stones here either.. We ALL love to have you on this site (AND the African site). You are a wealth of knowledge that is an asset ot have around. Just don't get too knotted up when we are yakkin' on the 'net!! Take a deep breath and remember, it isn't all the Queen's English!! Cheers!

TAM, the whole reason the DSC exsists is because a bunch of SCI members disagreed with the club and broke off and formed their own club!! Why SCI has decided to move the convention to Dallas is a question as vexing as the depth of the universe.. Folks are (and will be for years) still shaking their heads on this move.. The Vegas convention is fun.. I've been to it a couple of times.. Reno is too, though!
-
It's convention time again and we're off to Dallas for the annual Safari Club convention next month. Any of you guys heading to Dallas? I was slated to go to Reno for the SCI, but we changed that thought and are waiting till next year when its in Vegas.

Bill, I say ele on the other site along with 99% of all the other "more afluent" and "educated" hunters.. Seems to me that calling an elephant an ele isn't giving the non hunting and anti crowd ammo towards their cause nor disrespectful to the animal in any way, shape or form.. Most ALL on that site who hunt elephant with any regularity call them ele as well.. If it was "ammo", wouldn't we all hear it on PETA propoganda posters and commercials and hear it being used at their rallies (obsurd, eh?)?? It just seems that it's a pet peeve of your's as you made this same exact post on my ELEPHANT hunting thread on this site earlier this year. Same with on here.. 99% of all the AZ and NM deer hunters on here and I know are going to and will ALWAYS will call coues a "COOZ" and ANY other WT (excuse me, Odocoileus virginianus (insert subspcies)) an "Eastern"... doesn't matter if it's from TX, NM, MT, MX, etc.. We all know that you used words for a living for a LONG number of years, but to go onto a site and belittle and look down your nose at someone for saying something that is, shall we say, par for the course, just BS.. That'd be like going to TX and berating anyone you hear say "ya'll".. You're not gonna get far before being called out. We all know what he/she is saying when they refer to a WT as an eastern or an elephant an ele. Most on this (and the other) site are fairly well educated and can think for ourselves. Rant over.

McKenzie-brand Coues mount?
Kilimanjaro replied to AZ_Chris's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I've mounted 4 or 5 CWTer's coues bucks on these offset forms.. They look good. -
I've seen them near Nara Visa and Wagon Whee while pronghorn hunting.. But thats quite a drive from here.. Seen them near Clovis a time or 2 as well when we were on the stateline (TX) quail hunting.

I know its in Reno again this year, then I think Vegas next year (may be Reno again) and in 2011 and 2012, then i KNOW its moving to Dallas in 2013.. What a bonehead move that is!! 2 HUGE conventions for the SAME thing in the same town in the same month.. Don't know what they're thinking on that one.

Who would want to eat a javi?
Kilimanjaro replied to joeeden's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I don't... Haven't shot one in going on 13 years. And back in TX we'd shoot them for the ranch hands.. They would ask us for them.. And in TX there is no draw for javies.. -
I was scared for my life the whole time and didn't get any chance at all to enjoy the camp-life, the deer hunting and the comradrie of my fellow hunters in camp. Spent every night in cold sweats thinking of the brown boogy man that was just on the other side the mesquite bushes watching me. Had a white knuckled death grip on my side piece the entire time.. Scared of my own shadow down there, I tell ya..

Who would want to eat a javi?
Kilimanjaro replied to joeeden's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I've probably shot 30 or so of them back in west and south TX over the years and I ate ONE (and it was the 1st one I ever shot at 11 years old). Never again. Tasted just like it smelled in the burros, chops, chorizzo, etc... From then on, the ranch hands on the properties we stacked them on got their fill of javie meat every season when we went hunting. They liked it when we would shoot the little brown ones the best.. Haven't shot one since my sophmore year in college back in '97.. I haven't missed all that much! -
Nice buck.. Anyone ever tell you that you look exactly like the lead singer from Weezer?? Dead ringer

Kilimanjaro replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
The majority of the males taken by me and my partners were either juvie males or second season males that haven't mollted into full winter plumage yet.. lots of browm faces still.. Same as always on the opener and the few weeks following. By the New Year, you won't be able to tell the difference in any of the males. They'll all have molted and put on the full blue color into their beaks and legs. -
Rifle Kick....looking for suggestions for next rifle
Kilimanjaro replied to Redman's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
With the shoulder pain, you will never notice the detached retina Nobody ever claimed it was for the weak and feable! I've shot WAY worse.. 378WBY, 460WBY, 577NE, 500Jeffery.. All kick WAY worse than 470 Back to the topic, if you are a flitcher, get a brake. -
Rifle Kick....looking for suggestions for next rifle
Kilimanjaro replied to Redman's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Brakes suck, but they work.. I don't like them but in a situation like this, they would be the bet bet. Just be sure to have hearing protection anytime you may shoot. I shot my old RUM on a snapshot at a kudu and didn't have time to put my plugs in, and my ears rang for 2 days. Not good. I have one on my 300WSM built by Match Grade Arms.. Had one on my 300RUM by Hill Country Rifles too.. If you want, come shoot my 470 Nitro for a few rounds then shoot that WSM of yours.. It'll cure you from thinking that WSM kicks. -

It was a mediocre opener.. Bad weather (windy and DRY) precluded all of our hunts.. We had 7 covies on Fri with me taking 6 (w 3 misses) and my partner took 5. We counted the misses as shot birds and moved onto the next covey as to not blast all the youngsters. Day 2 we had a 6 covey day with me taking 5 birds and my buddy taking 6. Yesterday we had a better day with the moisture in the air and the cooler weather down there, plus the wind wasn't as vicious. We put up a 9 covey day and I took 7 (with a lost bird the dogs just could not find) and my partner took his limit.. Also found the biggest coues shed I've ever found! While not an insane opener, it was great none the less just to be out.. I am looking forward to chasin birds clear through Feb.. I am planning on trying a bunch of new areas this year that are a bit further drive, but are supposed to carry good numbers of birds, with desert birds very nearby.. -
Mike, PM me with closing costs on a re-fi at these rates.. Too good at that % not to.
