Preferred vegetation to hunt coues in?
azcouesandelk replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I like hunting the ocotillos alot but tend to stay in the mesquite hillsides around 3500 to 4000 feet elevation. I like to hunt ocotillos the most becuase I just look for horozontal lines and I tend to see a good amount of deer. I also like the mesquite hillsides with grass because I always see a good amount of deer feeding. -
I just spent the last 3 days up in my unit and I didnt hear any bugles but I did watch some bulls at a long distance that were bugling. Should start heating up this next weekend.

I am coming up with 125 with the 13 inch spread. Great buck Jim!

I am heading up again early tomorow morning to do some more deer hunting and elk scouting. Last weekend I heard the first bugles of the season. Pretty sure it was the same bull but he bugled 2 times and about 200 yards apart. Hopefully it heated up a little this week and they are starting to talk.

Stories of Your First Coues Hunts
azcouesandelk replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
My first coues hunt was in 2004. I was 16 years old at the time and was interested in learning about these deer after my dad had hunted them the year before and had several close calls. The draw results came out and my dad and I had been drawn for the November tag in 36c. Not knowing anything about these deer I started to research them and found this forum . This is where I found the passion. I bought a pair of 8x42 wind rivers to glass of my knees with. Come the hunt we had 2 days of scouting in and I was going to shoot anything. My dad and I had hiked way back in an area where we had pig hunted in February and seen alot of deer. We set up looking opposite directions and I found a group of does with a spike. I had the spike in the crosshairs but passed him up thinking to myself that I can't shoot the first morning and I was sure I would see bigger bucks. We hunted the rest of the day only finding does and a herd of pigs. The second day of the hunt we went back to the same general area and around 10 in the morning a small 3x2 stepped out and I was going to take the shot. I flipped the safety off and the buck turned and ran. Not wanting to shoot at a running deer I waited to see if he would stop. That deer ran over 600 yards and did not stop til it got over the ridge. We hunted til dark and saw no more deer. The third morning we hunted all morning without seeing a buck and my dad was packing up camp while I went on one last hike. I walked in some thick ocotillos when I saw a deer. I through the binos up and see a nice 3x3 with no eyeguards. I pull the rifle up only to see the bucks tail going up the side of the mountain. I head home discouraged but happy that I was able to see some deer. We go out the second weekend only to see does, mule deer bucks, and pigs. It was my first ever whitetail hunt and since I have been involved with 9 successful coues hunts. -
I did not mean to disrespect you cramerhunts. I was just saying he is a great bull. Alot of people do pas sup this quality of animal somehow. I know I do not have the self control to pass up that animal.

I think he should score right around 360! He has some huge fronts and awesome backs! Also he is a great bull no matter what unit!

I used to work in the arhcery department at sportsmans warehouse and there are some people that do not know as much as they should. If you do go ask for Cody or Nate and they will set you up properly.

Well I went up Thursday night for the weekend to scout and hunt and do some volunteer work. Driving in thursday night I saw a couple of decent bucks run across the road then an absolute monster ran across. First impression was a 180 class buck! I wake up Friday morning and go to an area where I always find deer. I setup to glass and instantly find some does and fawns. Glass for about an hour and find 5 bucks feeding up on a distant hill. Out of the 5 bucks 2 were 4 points and the rest were small forks. After reviewing the area I realize that the bucks are on private property. Glass til about 10 and decide to head back to camp and hang out. Saw a total of 23 deer in the morning. Went back out that afternoon and glassed up a spike and doe but decided to not even stalk them. So day 1 was over with 25 deer seen and 6 being bucks. Saturday I woke up at 7 and head up to the AES water project. Was able to meet up with some familiar faces and was able to meet some new ones. This morning I was up and ready to go well before first light. While driving to an area I see 3 sets of eyes. Come to find out that it was 3 bedded bucks. Parked the truck and waited for light. While waiting for light the bucks got up and walked away but 3 more bucks walk by while it is to dark to see the pins still. Watch where they go and start to trail them. While walking behind them I find a shed to the big buck I saw Thursday night. While following the bucks I see them in a field about 150 yards away and there are 8 of them now and the big buck is with them. He is bigger than I thought now. I start to belly crawl to try to close the distance and they are spooked by a buddy on the other side of the field. So they stalk was done and the bucks went up the hill and I did not want to push them anymore. So that is my first weekend of the hunt so far and I plan to have him on the ground this next week Here is the As It Lay pic and several others. The shed scores right at 76 1/2 and with a matching side and a 27 inch spread he would be a 180 buck!

If your going to camp
azcouesandelk replied to ultramag's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Sounds like a rough weekend. I really hate it when someone comes and camps right next to you. There is plenty of other camp spots in the woods. There is no need for the generator going 24/7. I can understand a few hours to charge the battery but that is about it. As for the quads I am not a fan of quads. And the campfire not being out is the last straw. I have put out alot of fires that other campers have not put out and it pisses me off every time because they think that it will not start a forest fire! Sorry to hear about your weekend and hopefully you will have a better one the next time you go up! -
Nice pictures Riley!! This is Christian we talked quite a bit at the camp last year. Maybe I will be down there and I can help you get your fourth deer in 4 years!!!
-
Heading out right now! Good luck guys and may some big bucks go down this weekend!

That is a great bull for sure. On monstermuleys they said it scored 407. that bull has more mass then he knows what to do with.

What is this forum becoming giving Jim power like that -
Awesome buck!!! I need to make it over to Cali for a blacktail hunt one of these days.

My dad has the Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in .25-06 and he has been shooting 100 grain nosler ballistic tips for the past 8 years and they group the best for him. The winchesters did a decent job out to 200 yards but he could not get the groupings he wanted at 300.

The mount turned out awesome man!!! Just need to top that this year now

these aren't trail cam photos!!! Could be in your unit though He also doesn't use just a little point-n-shoot camera either..... and it shows!! Yeah those are some fantastic photos there. I have an idea of which unit but will not say what I think it is It's not where you are thinking ...... It even surprised me! How do you know what I am thinking when I don't even know? I DO know you are thinking LOW on your scores! Just trying to stay conservative

The first buck I am putting right at the 175 mark he has some good front forks and the second buck I am gonna say right around 190 with a 175 typical frame!!!
