    Giant Velvet Coues buck!

I appreciate all the individuals that have commented on this thread and offered their congratulations. It has almost been a week since I have killed this buck and I am still walking on the clouds. I wish you all the best in your upcoming fall hunts and I look forward to seeing some great stories and pictures of some giant critters.

    Giant Velvet Coues buck!

I guess I have rode the bench long enough and I feel it necessary to enter the game. My name is Broc Brimhall and I am the lucky hunter that was able to kill the unbelievable buck. For you that know me, I am not new to hunting coues deer. I grew up in Arizona and have been very fortunate to kill some great coues deer. My decision to buy this tag was not spurred by a lifelong goal of killing a giant coues. As a matter of fact, I knew it would be very difficult to top my 2009 archery buck even with the auction tag in my pocket. Nope, I bought this tag to contribute in the conservation of these deer that we love and also to create a unique hunting experience that I would be able to enjoy with friends and family. My decision to hire Team Mossback AZ was a no brainer. Actually, it was Jay Lopeman one of the owners that made the trip to Tuscon to bid on my behalf for the tag. Team Mossback is first class all the way. I have found it very funny the amount and variety of negative comments in this thread. To all you haters out there let me set the record straight. This buck was killed on public ground and there was no type of Antler King food plots in the vicinity. Mossback didn't raise the deer in a pen. They didn't hand feed it steroids. There was no corral or high fence used to let this deer hit freak nasty stasis. They (one of Mossbacks guides) also found this buck on their own and no other individual or guide operation was involved. Actually if you find out the correct formulation of steroids that will transform other deer into mutants like this then please let me know because I may start raising some in my back yard and turn them into my reindeer for the christmas season. Coues n Sheep gave the best and most accurate summary and I appreciate his comments. I don't want to turn this post into a complete rant because I feel that most hunters or members that have posted are just like me. They are hard working coues maniacs that love to see all the big bucks that hit the dirt each year. I appreciate all the positive comments that have been shared. This buck is truly a buck of many lifetimes and although I didn't think it was likely to top my previous best coues, I managed to blow it out of the water. I would like to thank all that were involved and took part in this rodeo of a hunt. Team Mossback you all deserve the credit as it was your hard work that put me in the right place at the right time. Keep on finding those giant animals and I hope to be lucky enough to join you on another adventure soon

I'm interested in this gun and possible in the scope also. Do you live in Phoenix? Any particular reason you are selling it? Please email me at broc.brimhall@gmail.com and we can discuss the details thanks. Broc Brimhall

    Mike Udall aka Treestandman

I was very saddened to hear about mike's passing. I actually heard the news yesterday from my in-laws and I think it is a great think that coueswhitetail has created this post. My thoughts and prayers are definitely with the Udall family.

    **Draw Results**

Well desertmafia21 I guess I will leave you a couple bulls to chase around. My father-in-law and myself drew the Unit 23 north archery hunt with only 8 points. I never dreamed that we would draw this tag and I still think that the game and fish must of made a mistake somewhere along the process. We also drew tag #'s 4&5 out of 15 which were the first tags drawn in the random (non-bonus point pool) drawing. Anyways, congrats to everyone that drew and to those that didn't don't go suicidal because your turn is coming.

    DIRTBAG ARCHERY ELK HUNTER

I am with most people on this post. I know how valuable trail cameras are and I am not referring to there dollar amount. We put them up and hope to see something special every time we check them. It sucks when they are tampered with but it sucks worst when they are stolen. I had a total of around 10 trail cams up this summer scouting for the upcoming bow season and when all was said and done 2 were stolen. You are pissed off that someone erased a few photos and I think you should just count your blessings because it could of been much worse. Another note is concerning that trick tank being such a secret. I have found tanks that were miles from roads that I couldn't image another person knowing about. The problem being is that Arizona has so many hunters and good hunters for that matter that there is no such thing as a secret hole just less known holes.

    leica geovid

I have had the geovid 10's for about 3 years and as far as I am concerned they are the best thing that has happened to hunting and in particular bowhunting in the past 5 years. That being said they are still not perfect. I have not had any problems with mine but swaro's warranty is a lot more comforting that leica and the only other flaw I see is that the rangefinder button is on the left side instead of the right. At the beginning it was hard to use the rangefinder using only one hand but with a little practice this does not seem to be much of an issue anymore. If I were you I would definitely drop the cash for the leica's, so good luck with whatever you decide.

    31 Late December.

Congrats on the tag. Unit 31 can be a fun hunt but isn't easy. I helped my friend last year during the same hunt and same timing that you are talking about hunting. We hunting really hard but we were only seeing does and a couple dinks. We saw absolutely no rut activity to speak of and that was pathetic considering we were seeing between 20-40 does in every area we went. With the hunt coming down to the wire, we finally found a decent buck (low 70's since he was broken up) so my friend decided that he would do. Anyways, pray that the deer rut is a little better that what the elk rut was this year, hunt hard and you have a chance to kill a good buck.

    New to Coues country

I would have to agree 100% with AZantlerhead on this topic. Arizona's secret honey holes are drying up pretty fast and the more we talk the faster they will be gone. I am not saying lets be jerks about our secret hunting areas but we need to use a little discretion.

    2009 arizona dream buck (133 P&Y inches)

Sorry I have not posted any replies for a couple of days but I was out of town trying to help my friends fill there tags. Anyways, a few people asked concerning his measurements and I tried to find the sheet but it must have got thrown away, so I will go and measure him again and get those posted. I understand that he will be close to the world record but due to some minor deductions I don't think he will quite clear the mark. Also, from what I have been told, a buck can't be entered as the world record unless the velvet is stripped. Don't get me wrong. My buck is a stud and I would love to have my name in the record book as the new world record holder. However, I could never strip the velvet of suck a beautiful buck just to make it into some book. This is just the way I think so I don't want anyone to think that I am forcing my beliefs on anyone else. Someone else also wanted to know whether it would score as a typical or non-typical. When I first saw the buck on trail cam and even on the ground I thought for sure he would be counted as a non-typical, but after looking at his closely he will probably be in the typical category. All his points come off his main beam in a really weird pattern but they are still coming off the main beam, so there is only one real non-typical point that only measures 1 inch. Anyways, I appreciate all of your replies and I will try to get those scores posted, thanks

    2009 arizona dream buck (133 P&Y inches)

I apoligize for not mentioning my name as someone in the forum pointed out. My name is broc brimhall and I will also try to add some of my trail camera photos
  15. This is the buck that I killed on tuesday. This story is a true testament to how scouting can pay off. All summer long we had scouted and checked our trail cams, but it wasn't until August the 15th when I first laid eyes on this buck. He came in once to the trail cam on August 3rd and hadn't returned since, but I became obcessed with this deer so I decided I was going to only hunt him for the first week of the season. I sat my stand for a total of 5 days totally about 42 hours and I had passed on some great deer. I passed on this huge frames 3x3 3 different times that would of scored around 100 inches. Finally like a dream my buck walked into the tank. I didn't even have time to get nervous because as soon as he cleared the trees and I saw that it was him i drew my bow, waited for him to lower his head to drink and let the arrow fly. He was facing me head on but I was in a elevated position, so I shot him between his scapula blades and it came out at the bottom of his chest by his armpit. I would like to say that he ran 100 yards and died that is just not the way it went. I waited 1 hour and then went to recover my prize and to my surprise I jumped him up after 150 yards. I couldn't believe that he was still alive. Anyways, I backed out and returned 3 hours later with my friend Zac Shill. Willie Shill would of been with us but he popped a tire on the way and had to return to the truck. We continued to track the buck and I couldn't believe that this deer was still going. He was bleeding more than any animal I have ever tracked and all the blood was from his lungs. We followed his trail for about a mile and he led us right back to the place I originally shot him. All of a sudden the blood became almost non existent. Despare began to set in but we kept at it and kept on some tracks that I figured would be his. We followed those tracks for about 150 yards with only 4 drops of blood and found the deer just as I was about to step on him. The relief that I felt was almost overwelming and to top it all of was the moment I was able to put my hands on those huge velvet antlers. He is more that I could of ever wanted taping out at 133 inches. The most impressive part of this story is this buck's will to live. Once I had the deer on the ground and saw my hit, it was absolutetly perfect for that current situation. That deer just kept on going and only stopped when he had absolutely no blood left. I definitely gained a whole new respect for these animals.
