I appreciate the comments so far. I talked with one of my brothers last night, not wanting to throw him under the bus, but he said he has decided to not take his boy until he is 10. My boy wants to go now and it would crush him if I told him he couldn't go until he was 10. That's 5 years away. Plus I don't think I want to wait that long for him to go either. I think I will for sure start bringing him along on some quick rabbit hunts, etc. And depending on if I get drawn for Javelina in the spring I will likely take him along on that too.

Way to go! What a beautiful buck, I am sure he was stoked! -
That is way cool! I can't wait until I get to take my boys out! I love heaing stories like that! How old was your son when he started shooting the 243?
-
Congrats to Jared! What caliber did he shoot that with? What about his other 2?

All, just dreaming a little about my next purchase. I think I have seen this topic on here before, but it has been a while. My little man is going to start hunting/shooting in a few years and I am starting to think about what caliber to get him. I also want it to be a gun that i could potentially shoot at yotes, javelina, and deer both coues and carp if I wanted to. I really like the 22-250 but am not sure it would be a good gun for mule deer. What are your thoughts?

I have the Nikon Buckmaster with BDC. I put that on my 270 WSM. Basically, I have spent time at the range and have figured out what distance it is where the bullet hits when I aim with each line that intersects with the vertical one. Basically giving me multiple reticles. Practice. I need more too! Good luck.

Very cool! And with a bow... nice. -
Those are neat pics. Pretty good bucks. Are you going for a 100" buck or just a good trophy for your first coues?
-
Maybe I should get one of those for my boy instead of a 22-250.

Love it!

Nice find. That was obviously REAL old. There are NOT bucks like that in 33 anymore.

Rockslayer, you made me laugh out loud with that comment about why they make big gun safes. I like your idea about starting them off small. I want a 22-250 anyway, so I am going to get that. As my boy progresses, I will likely move him into a 243 then a ???

It drives me crazy when people bring up Favre's interceptions!!! The majority of his interceptions have been the result of his receivers not being able to hang on to the ball! Imagine what more he could have done if he had receivers like Moss, Rice, Fitz, etc.

Wow! Thanks for sharing. Welcome.

Very nice!

If that was game and fish, they sure did a great job investigating how the animal died!!!

ya, I am going to stay away from the vanguard. I am looking at the Tikka T3 Lite or a savage.

That was me... hope I didn't cut you off! I was in a hurry to get back to the office. Didn't see any other stickers though. Did you have one?

Good buck! Story???

Love this topic... A few years ago, just after I got married I went up to unit 1 and 27 for an archery deer hunt with my new in-laws. The oldest brother in law was about 18 at the time. He had the reputation of being a bit selfish. It was raining and we were on our way back to camp from spending a few hours tracking a wounded deer. I was up front with my father in law and another guy. We decided to stop suddenly and this other guy and I would jump out and both start running "after a good 4x4 buck" just to see what this brother in law would do. So we jump out and I take off running up this embankment, clawing my way through the mud. My father in law says out the window to my two brothers in law that there was a good buck up the hill and to go around the bend in the road and cut them off. The older boy and the younger boy (about 16) jumped out of the back of the truck and start running down the road. The younger one had already shot and missed on the trip so the older one was already upset about that. The older grabs the younger and pushes him out of the yelling you already had your chance, its my turn... stay here you idiot! We all had a really good laugh from that. Not a selfish bone in that boys body.

Right On! He looks like a happy camper.

Ok. Suppose I take mule deer out of the mix. I have access to an old 243 savage that has been in the family for years. Is a 22-250 a good choice for coues?
