Congrats on your tag and be ready for the addiction of these little deer to hit you head on! You've picked a unit with no shortage of deer! The bucks are there you just need to get back into the hills or flats for that matter and find them. When I'm hunting a new unit I always look for limited vehicle access areas and go from there. I like to hike in the dark a few miles before getting to a knob or glassing point that you can see as much country as possible and let your eyes do the walking from there. Be patient as most of the deer will get up and move a little throughout the day off and on. Glass, Glass, and Glass some more! Trust me if you feel like your not seeing anything it's most likely you not the deer. You can probably find at least a doe on just about any hill in that unit! Good luck and post pictures when you kill!

Trying to think of the words to start this thread off! First off I know that most likely I won't accomplish what I did in the past month with bow as I did in the last 30 days! I killed the biggest coues of my life as some of you have already read "it finally happened" thread! Well one of my best friends and I were fortunate to draw archery bull tags in highly coveneted unit with minimal bonus points! I felt karma was on my side after taking my coues buck and hoped that would translate into a stud Bull. Well on the 7th day of the hunt my other best friend Tracy and I were working on getting in front of s group of elk with a bull we nick named the "sticker" bull! Luck was on our side and this bull provided me a 45 yard shot! The Bull only made it 100 yards before he expired! My best bull to date as we taped him at 357 and change! Tracy putting in some work on my Bull Josh grilling up some of the Bulls tenderloins in cal fat we took from the bull as well. We did this 5 hours after harvesting the bull and it taste great! That night I traveled a few hours away to a different unit for the opener of my mom's early rifle bull hunt! She had been putting in for the last 14 years and finally drew her first ever elk tags! She and my stepdad had put in he time scouting the entire month of September to find her a bull she had been waiting for! There hard work paid off and she harvested a great bull with 13 inch kicker of his right G4! We had this bull in range on day 1 but it didn't work out! Day 2 came around and we found ourselves in 250 yards away from "kicker" and my mom let him have with a perfect shot right behind the shoulder! We taped him out at 366 even! A Bull well worth waiting for! Congrats to my mom and stepdad on a great job scouting and taking this terrific bull Right after she tagged out I was back on the road to my unit to help my best friend Josh tag out! Well on Tuesday night day 12 we were able to pull this big frame bull from his cows! Josh absolutely hammered this bull and put him to rest quick! We had no problems following this blood trail! Congrats to Josh and hunting hard and coming away with a dandy bull!

For 8 years I have been attempting to arrow one of these guys! I've missed a few really good deer and have passed on several smaller bucks with a bow! I've never taken a true giant and after years of hitting it hard with a bow and rifle god finally saw it fit to bless me with one of these amazing deer! Opening day I passed on a really pretty three point. I got a lot of flack from my buddies but you can't kill a giant if you shoot the first good buck! I had this buck at 23 yards for 20 minutes and I resisted the urge to let an arrow fly. I hunted 4 days opening weekend and decided to return yesterday for a day hunt! Left the house at 1:30 am and drove to my hunting area! Got into my stand at 5:20 am and was ready to roll. At 8:23 am a doe came into my set up. Minutes later I heard a crash up the hill and three bucks coming right at me! The first buck was a absolute stud who I had a little history with! I named him "Edge." Edge was first in line and walking a trail that would put him 14 yards directly in front of my stand. Before I knew it I had my bow in hand and was drawing on this deer at 14 yards! It was steep terrain and the deer was literally eye level with me. I remember thinking to myself I couldn't believe he didn't notice me draw my bow! Edge was slowly walking and After getting drawn back I was contemplating trying to stop him with a grunt. I decided against stopping him and let the Rage Hypodermic fly! It was an amazing moment watching that arrow disappear into Edge's shoulder! He exploded straight down hill and expired in sight only going 50 yards! I couldn't believe what happened! I couldn't stop shaking and called my wife in disbelief! I finally accomplished a goal that was set out years ago! I finally took a true giant! One of my best friends Tracy Boorn scored this buck for me right at 117 gross! Unbelievable, he had 18 inch left main beam going 19+ on the right. He also had over 35 inches of mass!!! My favorite though is that right eye guard!!! Hope you guys enjoy the pictures! . Wish I could have got better pictures but this was the best I could do by myself!

Bowmadness, Good for you for offering to help someone out! If I were in your position I would go up as planned and maybe ask around a few camps to see if they could use your help! It's worth a shot. Only one way to learn is to get out there and be in the elk woods! Regan

My buddies and I have back packed in a couple times! Just like any where else if you can get away from the crowd chances of seeing a higher number of bucks shoots straight up imo.

. I was set up in a tree stand.

Thanks for all the comments guys! I'm was super impressed with the rage hypodermic! As the buck was walking his left shoulder was back as he was taking a step forward with his right leg. I released right then and it punched right through the center of his shoulder blade and out perfect the other side hitting his heart! I could just see him pumping blood as he took off!

I know This was a while back I was just reading it again to help my set up for this year. But you couldnt have been more on the money the bucks came in mid day on the 4th, the 5th and the 6th, Unfortunately I was in school and wasnt sitting those days. This year I will plan in advance and try and plan to sit the days of a fuller moon. Thanks again for the advice! It's tough seeing your blind in the back ground and those bucks right in front of it! Hopefully you get a shot at them this year!
