Mike S ... Good call ... wish I would have stopped there this AM when I was shooting at Rio Salado. Jeffro ... yeah, I've heard of Whitecloud ... supposed to be really good. I'll have to call them as well. Thanks. Now you know a Winchester guy will never wish that he had a Remy instead, right ???

Have you looked at the Hornady Superformance round for that rifle? Seems like really decent ballistics with a 200 yard zero. Also, Double Tap makes a 140 grain Barnes Tipped Triple Shock that is supposed to launch at 3325 FPS ... significantly faster with higher energy than what you are using. Those TTSX Bullets have really good ballistics qualities too. Bet that is a FLAT shooter if it's as fast as advertised. I don't have personal experience with them, but it might be worth the cost of a box to see if they are any good (unless someone else here has experience with them ... good or bad).

Congratulations on your draw ... but in that unit, YOU NEED TO BE AFTER A MONSTER. That is THE STRIP ... if you draw the Strip, you don't want to come back with Bambi ... you want to come back with his Great Great Grand Dad. I was lucky enough to be drawn for 13A (also part of the Strip) 3 years back ... passed on several "nice" bucks looking for the real Wallhanger ... he never showed ... too warm. Got drawn again for it this year (what luck) ... I'll still pass on the "nice" ones, looking for the trophy. This year I know better where to go (thanks to a couple of locals) if the weather will cooperate and stay cool. As far as guides go, if you have the money ($4-$5K or so) there are some really good ones up there. I just don't have that kind of scratch laying around that I could spend without a subsequent trip to a divorce attorney (and thus another big expense). If that sounds like you, you'll need to spend some quality time up there getting to know the unit and try to establish some areas that see good deer activity. If you have the money, get the guide ... I would if I had it.

Yeah ... lots of small meals I guess ... that is true. Someone at Game and Fish said that it's likely a young cat possibly trying to establish territory, and I guess it is doing what they want it to do ... move away from people when it knows it's been seen. The gal said most cats like that end up moving off on their own. Never really thought of it, but with how close we are to the Reservation and a lot of open territory, it makes some sense that we could see a lion ... first one I've heard of in 6 years in this area, but stranger things have happened. I worry a bit about the neighborhood across Power ... lots of younger families with small kids ... probably most of them have no idea what to do if they come face to face with a cat. Just call me a "Worry Wart" I guess.
-
Hey ... this is a NO shoot deal ... Higley School District just issued a bulleton on this stating the lion has been seen 4 times, most recently 3 days ago. Didn't say the size of the cat, but that it had been spotted in the morning twice, evening once, and mid-day once. Twice in peoples yards. Says it is "not showing aggression toward people or animals", but that is just a matter of time, isn't it? Why would the cat be hanging around that area otherwise???

That guy is a complete TOOL. Yeah ... a TOOL who's been empowered by a TOOL. No wonder Obama can take vacations all the time ... he just has a bunch of Czars (all whackos) doing his work for him ... none of them elected to office (nor could they be ... too whacko).

Holy crap ... that's right where I live. Guess I need to take my handgun when I go running.

Those on the left will always try to use some means ... whatever means necessary ... to strip us of our GOD GIVEN rights. It is in their very nature to do so ... the only rights they will see preserved are those that they deem "appropriate" or "correct". Most often, they support the right of the government to dictate to us how we should/will live our lives ... but they'd certainly support the rights of animals over people ... see the writings of Cass Sunstein (a man who is not elected but has been empowered to affect our rights). Strange that the left supports a woman's "right to choose" when it comes to a pregnancy, but seek to eliminate a more general "right to choose" by trying to dictate to the masses what they will or won't be allowed to do. America is ripe for CHANGE ... and by that I mean a change back to our roots and the teachings of Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers. We need to remove the CURS from office in the coming elections and take this country back!!! No more Chicago politics. No more unelected Czars affecting our lives. No more backroom deals. In short ... no more BULLSHIT. Anyone else think that trying to bribe a Congressman with a high ranking post to keep him from running for Senate is a crime??? Can anyone say IMPEACHMENT??? Sorry ... didn't mean to take this all political, but that is where it was headed ... the Environ Whakos are just left wing libs after all.

I go to Mike at Mile Auto Repair on 48th and Southern in Phoenix for all my work. Good guy. Honest. Reasonable.

I don't have one to sell, but one to recommend you try to find. I bought my son a Ruger Mod 77 / Mark II Compact in 7mm-08. Trigger job and muzzle break later, and the thing is an absolute TACK DRIVER. I thought it would be a little less accurate with a short barrel, but man was I wrong, and with the break it kicks like a .22-250 at the most. Never thought I'd like a Ruger Rifle as well as my trusted Winchesters, but I was wrong.

Barely used Kimber 8400 Classic in .300 Winchester Magnum (over $1100 new). This rifle has probably seen 4 boxes of shells and was carefully broken in over the first 40 shells. It is a CRF action with Winchester style wing safety. Nikon Buckmaster Scope with Tactical Turrets that is over $350 new (Leupold Rings). Has seen only one hunting trip and was babied. Would like $1000 for rifle with scope. Shoots "lights out" ... pretty close to a 3 leaf clover at 100 yards with Federal 180gr Barnes TSX. Need a valid AZ drivers license (CCW preferred) and be willing to sign a bill of sale to purchase (you must be "of age"). Trade offers considered for an AR-10 (Armalite, DPMS, Remington R-25), 10MM Semiauto Pistol (S&W 1006 or 1066), Colt 1911 (XSE or Series 80 ... Commander length preferred), or ??? (what do you have in the way of firearms that is approximately the same value???). Thanks for looking.

UPDATE: Will look at trades for 1911 Kimbers, Springfields, SIG (1911) and S&W (1911). Also will look at trades for Optics (Swarovski/Zeiss/Leica/Nikon/Vortex) ... 15x56 or similar binos, scopes, etc.

Obama nominates avid anti-gun judge
sjvcon replied to DesertBull's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Obama will push his radical agenda until the end of his term, which will hopefully be his only term. There is no question about it. But we are NOT powerless to stop him. The first step is this November, taking away his majorities in the House and Senate at the Ballot. We have to spread the word ... oust the incumbent Dems and any Republicans that voted with them. Replace them with CONSERVATIVES (of whatever party, though I've never met a Conservative Democrat) who understand the Constitution and the RIGHTS that it confers to AMERICAN CITIZENS. That is the first step in TAKING THIS COUNTRY BACK!!!! -
Savagman -- PM Sent. Short answer is yes ... I would. Joeybari -- Not at this point, unless someone wants the rifle w/o the scope. All offers I've had so far want both.

Looking for a gunsmith for trigger job
sjvcon replied to BeardownAZ's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
David Van Horn 1302 E Rawhide Ave Gilbert, AZ 85296-2504 480-892-9630 dvhcustom@cox.net Don't know if he does weekend work or not. Did my son's Ruger Mod 77/Mark II. Great trigger now. -
I have a barely used Kimber 8400 Classic in .300 Winchester Magnum (over $1100 new). This rifle has probably seen 3-4 boxes of shells, and was carefully broken in over the first 40 shells. It is a Controlled Round Feed with Winchester style wing safety. It has a Nikon Buckmaster Scope (sorry, but I can't remember if it is 4.5x14 or 6x18 ... I'm gettng senile and I'm not at home ... I'll post what it is later) with Tactical Turrets. I do remember that is over $350 new (not including the Leupold Rings). It has seen only one hunting trip and was babied. Would like $1100 for rifle with scope, but I am open to offers. Selling to fund custom modifications to .300 Ultramag ... otherwise I'd keep it. Shoots "lights out". Will post pictures as soon as possible so you can see the condition, but it's in near as new condition as it gets. I'll throw in the Mike Lucas Bore Guide that has always been used to clean it. You'll need a valid AZ drivers license (CCW preferred), be willing to sign a bill of sale and be of age to purchase. Trade offers will be considered for an AR-10 platform(Armalite, DPMS, Remington R-25), 10MM Semiauto Pistol (S&W 1006 or 1066), or .257 Weatherby.

Do you still have this? I have someone who might be interested.
-
Yeah ... it was their Youth Model, which comes with both youth and adult stocks. It was still heavier than the Ruger by quite a bit. My son is about average size for his age, and he couldn't shoulder it easily. The Ruger was no issue. Neither was the Remington. I'd have bought him the Winchester Classic Compact, but it was double the price, and Ruger makes a pretty decent little rig ... just had to get the trigger done right. We just went through the break in, and it is an absolute paper puncher at 100. Two half circles together and one about 3/8" away ... I'd say that will get the job done. Don't get me wrong ... I have nothing against a Weatherby ... they are just heavy in the Youth Model.

.22-250 is good for varmints of all types, and is a sweet little round to shoot, but I wouldn't use it for deer. Yeah ... I am sure some people have ... and maybe even with some success ... but it is really the exception. You want to put the animal down. PERIOD. You need a good wound channel for that. The .243 should really be the minimum for a deer rifle. You don't want to wound a trophy and never recover it. If you want to step up a bit to something that can handle a broader range of game, get a 7mm-08 or a .308 (even the .260 Remington, which has the same basic case). Don't give the recoil a second thought. Just put a removable break on the gun and get a thread protector for hunting with. The break will help immensely at the range ... and let's be honest, no one feels a kick while hunting when the adrenaline is pumping. Good luck with your decision. One note on the Weatherby ... my son found it to be very heavy. We ended up with a Ruger 77 Mark II Compact, which is a sweet (and light) little gun.
-
I used David Van Horn ... The Gun Shop ... in Gilbert. Did a great job on my son's factory Ruger M77 trigger and muzzle break. The trigger breaks light, clean and smooth ... that takes dang good work on a Ruger Trigger.
-
Uh ... I think maybe you should google "barrel break in". Not enough people really do that, and it is definitely of benefit. There is a good report on http://www.rifle-accuracy-reports.com/barrel-break-in.html And when it says 1 "Aw SH*T" wipes out all "At a Boy"s ... they ain't lyin'.

Good news for Larry, his family and the hunting community in general. Hopefully when Larry feels up to it, he'll share with all the members here what happened. I am sure there is a lesson to be learned that would benefit us all. It is sad that we live in a world where people will take what is not their's and what others have worked hard for ... Prayers for a speedy recovery Larry ... I don't know you, but I'm glad you're still with us.

What is this rifle worth? Pre 64 Win
sjvcon replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
If you are going to use it to do a custom, there are some other options so I wouldn't offer the farm for it. You can get a really decent commercial action from CZ for around $600 that is either .375 H&H or .416 Rigby based and can do a ton of calibers on. They need some refining, but other than that, they have a lot of great features from the 98 Mauser that the Winchester won't have (like a third lug, better gas handling, etc.). Not knocking Winchester ... I own more than a few. They are great ... there are just some other options out there. Now if that were a pristine gun ... that would be different. -
Shooting a target is a lot different than shooting an animal ... Shooting out to 80 or even 100 when shooting at a foam core block is probably in the "Wheelhouse" for a lot of us. But when you shoot at an animal that far away, there are a lot more variables involved. Probably the least noted of those is the animal itself "jumping the string". Sure, bows are quieter today, and faster. That is a fact. But at a distance of 80 to 100 they definitely have time to react. Best case is a complete miss ... worst case is you hit an animal that you wound (possibly kill) and never recover. I'm of a mind that most guys (or gals), using some patience and stealth, can get close enough to take a pretty sure shot. One that the animal has no real time to react to ... taking that out of the list of variables that one of the posters listed. Remember, whether you get one or not, the success is not in the kill, but in the hunt experience itself. Me, I'll keep my shots to under 40, even though I can hit a foam block from a heck of a lot farther than that. I don't fault you if you want to stretch that, but make sure your conditions are right.
