Where are you at. I am interested.

I always love to get the perspective of hunters who have been doing it longer than I have. That is some GREAT insight on "How To" Bill ... I am going to print that out and put it in my hunt pack for the next time I'm elk hunting.

Looking for Aftermarket Stock for Post '64 LA Winchester Mdl 70
sjvcon posted a topic in Classified Ads
I am looking for an aftermarket stock for a Post '64 Classic LA Winchester Mdl 70. HS Precision with Aluminum Block is what I've been looking at getting. I'd look at a McMillan, but don't want to spend a fortune, so ... just let me know if you have something you'd be willing to sell, and how much. Just looking to upgrade off of the factory injection molded junk. -
Well, I didn't read all the responses, so I may be repeating something already said ... if so, I apologize. You have max points ... you can't let that go to waste. You are right, we have some of the best Mulie hunting in the world right here in Arizona. You have to take advantage of that. I have hunted the strip twice in the last 4 years. Both times I was a DIY guy because I could not really afford the guide ... truth to be told I never thought in a million years I'd get drawn either time ... especially not the second time. First time out I saw deer, but none I was willing to shoot. This year I killed a nice 4x4 ... not a monster, but a nice deer that I am proud to have on my wall. It can be done wthout a guide, but it will take a lot of luck to find a beast as a DIY guy. There is just too much area to cover, and those guys spend all year finding and patterning the big boys so they can put paying clients on them. If you are out to get one over 200" and you want something close to a sure thing, put in for a bonus point until you can afford to hire a guide, and then hire the BEST GUIDE for the area (which will take some research). If you want the satisfaction of doing it yourself, put in for a bonus point and take a couple of years worth of vacation time up there scouting and learning the area. You are ahead of that game a bit having gotten a lot of information from someone who's done a lot of hunting there. Nothing says you have to go this next year, or the year after, or the year after. You can get a leftover tag for Coues Deer, Archery hunt for Coues and Mulie, etc. until you get to a place where you feel you are ready ... no matter if you are hiring a guide or taking time to learn the area. Some of what you do depends on your age and where you think you will be in terms of "hunting shape" a year, two years, three years, etc. from now. That always has to play in to decision making. All that said, the most important thing to remember is that the "hunting" is the fun part ... getting out and being in this wonderful world we were given to live in. The "kill" is just the final act ... and yes, is satisfying, but it isn't really necessary to truly enjoy the "hunt". Remembering that, you will be far ahead of the game. Good luck with your decision ... and Merry Christmas!!!

What a beauty. Congrats. Guessing mid 170's" give or take.

Well it looks like you've done better than "good" with that, although I'd argue that if you have a Mauser you already had a GREAT bolt action, but I certainly understand not wanting to mess around with something from your Grandpa. I have a Mauser from my Grandpa that will never be touched, other than cleaned and oiled regularly ... when I die it will go on to my kids, and hopefully theirs on down the line. Nice job on the Remington!!! Happy shooting!!!

Wow Ruthunter!! That is a nice buck.

I'd say go 20X over 12X for your purposes, but I agree with RR on the Turrets. The best long range guys I know always dial adjust and hold dead on, and they are really good at putting the bullet where it goes.

Looking to buy a Rimfire
sjvcon replied to couesobsession's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I was also looking for the CZ when I bought my son his Savage 17HMR. Couldn't find one for what I wanted to spend. Saw the Savage Rifle/Scope Package with the Accutrigger a Basspro and bought that. It's a TACK DRIVER. Don't think you can go wrong with it. CZ's are definitely nice, as are the Ruger 77/22's, but they are costly. -
cracked base on .270 cartridge
sjvcon replied to Pine Donkey's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
+2 on RR note of checking the headspacing. This is a common symptom when headspacing is incorrect. -
Can you shoot me a picture of the 7-08 ... especially the bolt. Thanks. Also, might be interested in the Minox ... picture of those too please. Thanks

There is a guy who advertizes on Backpage ... ACoatings. He does both Duracoat and Cerakote (which is the harder and more durable of the two). I had him Cerakote a 10/22 Receiver and he did a really good job. Showed me a bunch of other rifles and pistols he had done ... I was impressed. I am going to have him do my .44 Magnum when I get the spare change. That said ... there is absolutley nothing wrong with a good Robar job either ... they do excellent work. You have to like that particular look and feel ... I think it is really nice, but some people have complained that it makes the gun too slick ... all preference I guess.

Stainless barrel on blue action?
sjvcon replied to tontotom's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
+1 on going with a top barrel maker. Krieger would get my vote, but there are tons of others to be sure. -
Absolutely GREAT!!! Desert Mulies are the real "Ghosts" ... very tough to hunt. Nice job!!!
-
What a bunch of Jackasses!!! You know the PETA folks and all those Whackos will blame hunters, and you know there is no way a hunter would EVER do that.
-
Yeah ... they can have it towed and impounded ... but the owner can still get it back. Like I said ... the camera owner should have asked permission on private property. And the rancher probably has other LEGAL recourse if he wants to make a point.
-
Really nice buck BUTCH!!! That is a better pic than the one you texted me a while back. He's nice and wide.
-
Man ... if I could just con my old lady into letting me have $1200 for another rifle. I've always wanted a .308/AR Platform. I'll call you if my "Sweet Talkin' " works.

You wouldn't happen to have a preference for this round, would ya Lark??? The .270 Winchester is definitely a great round, but is it much different in performance than his .280 Remington? I've never compared the two.

This is a GREAT reminder for everyone, but especially for folks who have not camped a lot. About 10 years ago, a friend of my mom lost both her son and his fiance to CO poisoning (basically asphixiation) on a camping trip. We've always been careful, but especially since that occurrence. One of my friends has the Mr. Buddy, but he's never had great luck with it ... he might have gotten a dud or something. He has a devil of a time keeping it running. I never use anything in my tent for heat ... just a really warm sleeping bag that usually lets me sleep in a T-Shirt and shorts. Funny thing is I paid about $50 for it years ago and it works better than any of the expensive bags some other folks I know have. On occasion I have to sleep in sweats, but infrequently. Be safe all.

That's a great buck!!! What unit were you in?
-
Thanks all! Great memories, that is for sure. Nope 1den ... not Jessie. I'm Steve.

Well, he's certainly not a monster, especially coming from 13A. With some of the pictures and up close and personal examples I've seen from that unit, I almost feel like I robbed the craddle on this one. But circumstances with my hunt dictated taking the first decent one that I saw, and this one was it, especially since I came back empty handed from the Strip 3 years ago after passing up several decent bucks. With two weeks to go until the hunt, my Dad, who was also drawn, had an injury to his foot and was not sure he would be able to go. I was bummed for 2 reasons ... one that I would not get to hunt with my Dad, and two that I probably would not get to go at all ... probably not the greatest area (remote as it is) to hunt alone ... even being a fairly big and pretty capapble guy. We continued to prep for going, but it really wasn't until the week of the hunt we got a thumbs up from his doctor ... so time came and off we went. Spent a lot of time glassing a couple of days prior to and early in the hunt. Glassed some doe, several smaller bucks, some coyotes that would have been good long range shots if I had been hunting coyotes. Nothing really sizeable though. A few days in, after spending some time hiking and glassing in the morning, we were walking back to the truck and my Dad was talking about how much his foot was bugging him. I knew we were getting near the end of what would be meaningful hunting. We were heading back for a midday meal, and I decided to take a look in one area by a stock tank where we had seen some deer headed. Sure enough ... there's a buck. When I saw him, I knew he wasn't super wide, but he looked tall and the antlers looked pretty thick. He jumped a fence ... was a really awesome site as he made it look so easy. I headed to where he had gone over, and I glassed up the hillside behind thinking I might see him moving up into the trees. Nothing. I was thinking that he must have bolted after he hit the ground on the other side of the fence, and there was a cut there I had not seen, so he could have doubled back on me without me seeing him. I was thinking I'd lost him, but I decided I'd better check that cut ... jumped the fence and walked about 30-40 yards down into the cut and there he was. He was quartering toward me, but grazing and not looking my way. I cocked my rifle, pulled it up, and as soon as I got him in my sights he looked right at me. Didn't have a lot of time to think, but I remember thinking "GOOD ENOUGH DUMMY ... SHOOT!!!" One shot...right through the heart and he dropped. My Dad came walking over about 5 minutes after the shot. First thing he said to me was "I'm glad you took that one ... my foot is DONE." Then High Fives and photos. I was really glad I got to go with my Dad and share the time with him. It made it all the more special that he was there when I took my first ever mulie buck. Yeah ... he could have been bigger coming from 13A ... not a Trophy to most, but a very special buck for me.

I think the ballistics of the 7mm Wby will be better (ever so slightly) than any other 7mm until you get to the STW and the RUM in that caliber. The .280 would be a little behind ... more as your ranges increase due to the lack of starting horsepower (.30-06 parent case so less powder ... though also less recoil which is important to some). The main difference will be cost of components for reloading and/or lack of factory ammo in the Wby caliber. The 7mm Remington Mag is still the most commercially available, and no doubt always will be as it is a very capable and popular round. That said, if you have a 7mm Wby or .280 I would not go out searching for something else in the .284 stable. The Wby is certainly a good platform for a long range shooter, and the .280 would be good too (out to a point). Saw your ad for 7mm wanted ... you want it for ultra long range on mule deer and elk right? Better penetration and knock down at those ranges? If that is the case, personal opinion, I'd go with one of the .300 Magnums (Win, Wby, RUM or .30-378 Wby) or step up to a .338 Lapua or Edge (.338 in a .300 RUM case). What's the old saying on Hot Rods ... "There's no substitute for cubic inches..." In some respects, I think that goes for rifle rounds as well. In most (though NOT all) cases, I think you will have more retained energy downrange, and you will certainly have less worry with windage (higher mass available) ... and if you are using the ballistic turrets, then FLAT is not really as important, because you take the drop out of the equation. Not that there is anything wrong with a .284 ... fantastic caliber with great characteristics to be sure (and I own one) ... I just think if you are looking at shooting the bigger bodies at extreme ranges what you really want is retained energy for penetration and knock down. I'd use my 7mm all day at medium ranges as a first choice, but if I were thinking to really reach out, I'd grab my .300 RUM everytime. There is a trade in recoil to be sure, but muzzle breaks will deal with that (if you can stand the noise ... I just tolerate a little more hammering on my shoulder). Just my two pennies ... and I am sure that there are those out there that would disagree ... certainly no disrespect to them, as everyone has an opinion, and you could probably talk to 20 "experts" (which I am certainly NOT) that would all have different takes on it. Good luck.

Accurizing a Weatherby Vanguard
sjvcon replied to Condor's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Okay ... so I have to ask because it is something I have read a lot on other sites (so don't shoot me for asking) ... Doesn't the Weatherby "Free Bore", which give the round a velocity boost, inherently reduce the overall accuracy of the rifle? The trade off is speed for flatter shooting, but groups that are less tight. Is that true or false? Kind of relates to this question of accurizing I'd think.
