    Rifle scope preference

I have Zeiss, Leupold and Nikon. In my opinion, you can't beat that Zeiss (though in fairness the Nikon is a cheaper one). Just the clarity and intensity of light in the glass ... its amazing. I'll buy one of those whenever I can.

    Inquiring 257 Weatherby setups,

Whatever you do, look through everything that you are considering. Some people's eyes are different, and what is the best for one guy may not be the best for another. Ballistic Turrets are sure a plus, as they turn a regular old duplex into a bullet drop compensator. I like my MilDot though, as I can make adjustments in point of aim out to pretty good range without changing settings. That is just me. There are also some pretty good BDC reticles out there ... though I don't like Nikon's because of the size of the aiming circles ... they don't really allow for precise point of aim. Again ... that is preference. Enjoy your .257 ... in my opinion that is probably the best Quarter Bore on the planet.

    Time to Pick a Fight

Hart has installation and full smithing services too...I don't think Lilja does. Didn't know that about button vs cut...makes sense though. I might rethink my next barrel...was going to go Krieger...that might change.
  5. Can anyone tell me a decent camera that won't break the bank? I have never used them prior ... figured I'd start small monitoring the neighborhood feral cats ... bought one of those Tasco cheapies at Wally World. Needless to say ... it stinks. Didn't even get shots of my Aussie strolling around the yard, and only one picture of me walking around despite being out in front of it quite a bit. I guess I can figure $50 isn't going to cut it. Suggestions?
  6. +1 I have heard this as well.

    Time to Pick a Fight

Hey now ... a 7-08 has its uses. Pretty darn good caliber for starting a youngster off. No worse than a .308 other than bullet weight/selection and downrange knockdown. Probably not great when you are reaching out to the long shots, but not a bad medium range caliber. I'll admit it's no .270 ...

Picked up a Wildgame 5.0IR. 99 with batteries and card on sale at Dick's. So far pretty darn good.

    Time to Pick a Fight

Running top end loads in my last 300 RUM barrel, the throat torched out in just under 70 rounds. It steadily just got worse and worse. After nearly 500 rounds I finally threw in the towel and said to he!! with it and had it re-bored to the 338 Edge. After toying with a big 338, I cant see ever looking back at a big 300. More energy, less wind. So far, over 400 rounds without any noticable throat errosion or heat checking when examined through the Hawkeye borescope. I could see using a 300WSM or even a Win mag but that is about it. M 70 Rounds....man that's quick. I hope mine lasts longer. If it doesn't I might become an Edge convert too.
  10. I started to respond "Don't forget a trigger job..." earlier and got side tracked. I see now that you have done that. You'll pay a bitt less for the HS Precision and you'll get the full length bedding. That said, you get what you pay for, and most of the stuff I've read about McMillan is like the stuff you read about Swarovski ... if it's not absolutely the best, it's darn close. But a lot of guys I know swear by HS stocks too. Not so much on Bell & Carlson (though someone will probably say they love them ... it's all a preference thing I guess). I've stuck with Walnut myself ... but that's me. If you're on a budget, which most of us are these days, you've kinda gotta take it step by step, but the trick is doing that without wasting money. Trying different powders, bullets and primers is easy enough, and may cure your issues. Good stock properly bedded is a good start toward customizing your rifle. You're not wasting money there. After that, there's action massaging (true bolt, lap lugs, etc.), lapping your existing barrel (or perhaps replacing it entirely with something from a premium maker), etc. That starts running into some pretty big bucks. Hopefully somewhere along the way, you find what you are looking for with the fewest dollars spent. Good luck. It's a good base platform and caliber.

    Time to Pick a Fight

Yeah ... 338's are less affected by the wind as well ... especially getting up around 300 grains. One of the hunters I greatly respect swears by 338's, whether in a .338-06 (his prefered all around rifle), a .338 Win Mag or any of the bigger .338 Mags (which he has a few of). High energy at distance and less drift ... that's his reasoning. Keep 'em coming folks ... I like the 415 grain Gold Tip comment too ... hadn't even thought of that, but there is "long range" in that venue as well. I go 28" Easton Axis 340 FMJ's with 100 Grain Montec's ... but my long range there stops at about 45 yards ... just don't like shooting farther than that when it comes to game ... targets a bit further, but they don't jump the string

Yessir ... that is a Griz/Brown Bear ... nice one. I sure wouldn't want that fence to be the only thing between me and it ... wouldn't even slow it down.

    Need a rifle

You could always add a muzzle break on it for use on the range. It will cut down the recoil substantially. When you hunt, just pull it off and put on a thread protector. With the adrenaline surging, he won't feel a thing in the field, and with the break he won't develop a flinch on the range.

    Need a rifle

Do you have an issue with a 7-08? Better knockdown than a .243 for Elk and flatter shooting than a .308 in most cases. Probably on the light side for Bull Elk for all but the best of shooters, but plenty for Cow Elk and can be loaded fast and flat for our little Coues Deer. Both of my boys (9 and 11) shoot that round pretty well. They aren't small, but they aren't big either. You should be able to find .243, .260, 7-08 and .308 in youth and compact versions from Ruger, Savage, Remington and Weatherby ... Not all calibers from all manufacturers. There is also a Winchester Classic Compact if you are lucky enough to find one.

    Taser vs. Stun Gun?

Bear Spray ... yeah ... that ought to do the trick. Something strong enough to stop a Kodiak in its tracks will certainly stop an attacker ... though it might also do something a bit more permanent. I'm a big fan of women taking unarmed combat classes. The problem with Stun Guns, Tasers and Pepper Spray is that you have to be able to get them out to use them. That is not always possible. I started taking Combat Hapkido from my Karate Dojo a little over a year ago, and I couldn't be more impressed. I am a pretty big guy at 265 lbs, am fairly fit at that weight, and have a pretty good background in fighting arts, having done Karate, Boxing and Judo in the past. I was sold when the 170 lb instructor disabled me in a demo inside of about 2 seconds, and I was not holding back. I didn't know what hit me ... couldn't sign up quick enough. They teach valuable and effective techniques for both unarmed and armed attackers. There are other good ones too ... Aikido is very similar, and if you can find a real Krav Maga instructor (I think they are few and far between as true Krav is very restricted). I really like the Combat Hapkido program though. It's designed for close quarters self defense ... up close and personal. Anyway ... just a suggestion. Stun Guns, Tasers and Pepper Spray are all good ideas ... but it is good to know something a little extra too.

    Cerakote

I had this guy do the receiver for my 10/22 project. It came out very nice. Saw some of his other work while I was there and it looked nice too. Haven't put the finish to the test yet, but Cerakote is supposed to be very good.
  20. Unfortunately, like my Dad said, with our justice system, this dirtbag will probably live another 20 plus years in Club Fed before he's executed. And that's if he doesn't get off by way of "temporary insanity". Some of the surviving victims and some of the family members of victims will probably die of old age before they see justice rung up on this LOON. We have the best country on the planet, but our legal system is really screwed up. Sure, he deserves his day in court, but 1 day is all it should take, and they ought to execute him the next day...tons of eyewitnesses = no appeal.
  21. Such a tragedy. All these people killed and wounded by a nut who had clear and dangerous mental issues. To make matters worse, you have a dumb (and folks I mean DUMB) Sheriff down there playing the blame game...blaming the Political Right, blaming Palin, blaming everyone but the nutjob that did the shooting. He even soapboxed that the Republican Party is actively "blocking" the Democrats from "improving" this country. He's using this tragedy as a political opportunity instead of doing his job and investigating this. The folks in Tucson who support Ms. Giffords should start the recall efforts on this bozo. God bless all who were killed or injured in this cowardly act, and God bless their families.

I kinda liked the Nikon EDG that I looked through at Sportsman's Warehouse. Seemed very bright and very clear when comparing them to several others. Maybe that is just me ... I liked 'em.

    fireworks

The way I understand it, the "legalization" was a State thing, but each city is allowed to have it's own ordinances on them. Currently, only two cities in Maricopa allow fireworks ... Gilbert (if you can believe that), and Glendale. They are illegal everywhere else ... not to possess, but to set off. Now on to my COMMENTARY. Pretty darn lame!!! If you can't set them off in a city, you shouldn't sell them there. They are definitely doing it for the tax revenue, and also the FINES that they are sure they will collect because people won't check to see if they can set them off or not. I understand why the cities are keeping it illegel to some extent ... there are studies showing the incidence of fireworks related injuries to children being far too common. But to some extent, isn't that just a BAD PARENTING thing? Maybe it's just me, but again a case of the government stepping in too frequently in our daily lives? I grew up with legal fireworks ... never got more than a mild burn blister from holding the match too long.
