    ruger 1911

The trigger does seem to break clean and is not heavy at all. I'd guess about the same ... 4.5#. The uptake is what I'd like to eliminate. I like a trigger that breaks right from the pull. Just a preference thing. I am going to the range to shoot tomorrow. Probably 200-300 rounds tomorrow. I'll post a review when I get back. If it shoots like I've been told, I am sure I am going to be happy.

Colt has generally been the "Gold Standard" of 1911's. I don't think you can go wrong with a Colt. The Series 80 has a firing pin block safety, but it can be converted from what I understand, to the 70 Series non-block. The 70 Series configuration is more desireable by most law enforcement and hard core shooters. With all that said, you just can't go wrong with a Colt. I did pick up the Ruger yesterday. Nice piece. Can't wait to shoot it. It will probably need a little work on the trigger and some front strap checkering. Other than that, and some adjustable night sights, this thing looks well put together. The guy who waited on me at Cabelas, an affirmed 1911 guy, said the Ruger is the best gun he's seen for the money, and is comparable to guns that are much higher priced.

    ruger 1911

Well ... Cabela's called me tonight and they are holding a Ruger SR1911 for me for 5 Days. $749. A little higher than some other dealers, but it's there waiting for me. Think I'm going to have to at least go hold it and see if I want it.

    Which 15's are you running?

Minox ED's ... Heavy is Relative, and Money got Short ...

    leverevolution

I wondered how those would work in a pistol. Sounds like they work just fine. I'd figure if the 629 can hold up to them, a Redhawk should too right???

    Dall sheep Y2K11 double

Congrats Nut!!! Great story. Never hunted Dall, but it sure sounds like fun ... if not a LOAD of work ...

I'd be satisfied with that...for sure.

    coues deer weight

I don't know about boned, but two years back I picked one up fresh from being shot, not yet gutted, and it was NOT a strain to carry it to the rig. Can't be more than #30-40 in meat, and that'd be estimating high.

    Unit 6a

True, but it doesn't come up on a Google search to just anyone. Like I said...its a choice we make individually.

    FFP v. SFP

I've been reading up on the differences lately. Anyone using FFP? Do you like it or hate it? Is there really a need for it if you use a rangefinder and use and SFP on the correct setting? Just interested in peoples preferences and why...building my knowledge base.
  12. Congrats!!! There are some big Rams in there.

    Unit 6a

I get guys wanting this kind of information PM'd. Friend of mine once told a guy from work about a good spot he loved to hunt. Even took the guy there to show him. That year the guy gets a monster. The next year my friend goes out to do some scouting and finds this guy has brought several other hunters out there. Spot kinda ruined. Helping fellow hunters is a choice we each make individually. How we do it is a choice as well. I choose to PM, because I am choosing to help 1 guy/gal and not just anyone Googleing. That's my choice. I'm not going to bash someone who chooses the Forum approach...though I'd try to convince them my way is better for everyone, including the person they are trying to help, in the long run. Good luck, and glad you were finally drawn. If I'd hunted Coues there I'd PM, but I've mostly hunted Elk and Carp Deer in that unit.
  14. I guess I didn't state that correctly. I have no problem with the .300 mag. It did come with a brake, but I don't use it (too loud, and I don't need it). I want to build a good flat shooter that the boys will be able to handle without a brake. Also, a .300 is a pretty big stick on some animals. Just figured to build something smaller and in between .308 and some of the smaller stuff I have. Liked the idea of a wildcat. I appreciate all of the suggestions so far.

    14' Lowe Sea Nymph w/ 9.9HP

    TTT. Still for sale.
  17. Okay ... my dad and I never use our boat anymore, so it's got to go. The boat is at my dad's place up in Show Low and can be seen by appointment. We are asking $2,950. Boat is a 2001-14' SeaNymph-V series. It has a 9.9 HP Mercury outboard (pull start) with a newly rebuilt carb and new impeller. It also has a Motor Guide 54 lbs thrust electric motor and a LowRange X51 fish finder. It has an Optima 12 volt marine battery, 1 gas tank, life jackets and a custom canvas cover. The boat is in excellent shape. It is also listed on Craigslist. If it sells on CWT we'll make a donation to the site. Call John (602) 885-2308 We might consider a trade toward a Jeep or UTV, depending on what you have.

    need a computer monitor.

It is retrievable. Those types of files are usually not hard to pull. Don't lose hope.
  19. Well...I have Zeiss glass on the 300 now. Kinda like the walnut stock on it. Also wanted a lighter kicking LR rifle...the boys are getting to the age where they could start appreciating it ... Maybe even as soon as it's done.

    Minox 15x56 binos

I have the 15x58ED's. They are great. Much brighter than my Nikon binos. Also, my buddy took them out and compared them to another guys Swarovski's and said they were pretty darn good in comparison for the difference in price. Not AS good, but definitely good. Surely good enough for a non-professional like me. I like the fact that they only cost me $550. When I bought them, I asked about the 13x56/15x56. Doug told me that the 58ED's were definitely better ... just bigger and heavier.
  21. Okay ... so now that I have a .300 RUM for my main .308 cal, I have been considering re-barreling a .30-06 to 6.5-06 Ackley Improved. This would make use of the great ballistics qualities of the 6.5/.264 bullets, and from what I've read, will give performance very similar to the .264 Win Mag with much less powder. My only issue is that the cases have to be fire formed, and I've never done this. Pretty inexperienced to the whole reloading thing really, though I have all of the equipment and should really be doing to save on $$ and have better performance. I could go 6.5x284 Norma and get similar ballistics (and ready made quality brass), but I think the bolt and feed rails would need to be opened up/modified, and I hear that feeding on those is less reliable due to the wider case and associated transition. What are your opinions? Is fire forming a huge pain in the neck? Are there any safety issues? One guy (Kirby Allen) said just to seat the 6.5 bullet in a .25-06 case and shoot with a medium charge. Does that sound right? Is the 6.5x284 just a better option? Or even a .264 Win Mag? All opinions are welcome. Even suggestions for a different/better cartridge.

    ruger 1911

Okay ... so the biggest problem I have found with this pistol is that NO ONE HAS IT. Ruger is apparently only able to make a limited number per day, and they cannot keep up with the demand. All the reviews are really good. 70 Series Safety style, so no firing pin safety. Inexpensive. NOT AVAILABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Frustrating ... I had made up my mind to buy one.

    Isnt camera theft legal?

Right is right and wrong is wrong. Your Title says it all ... "theft". Theft is theft. What is legal or not legal is irrelevant. There are plenty of things that are legal that are morally questionable. A few years ago my buddy found a revolver in a mud puddle alongside a trail. He rode around camps to ask people if they'd lost anything. He posted on multiple websites to see if anyone would claim it. He ended up turning it in to the police as "lost". After 6 months he called them to see if it had been claimed, which it had not. Only at that point did he feel he'd done enough to return the gun to its original owner. See the difference? Someone putting a camera on a tree is not losing or abandoning it. They know where it is and will return for it. Now if you want to get into a debate on whether tree cameras should be used/allowed ... that is something else entirely. I sit on the fence on that one ... is it ethical to track animals and establish patterns via a device that never sleeps. Not sure I agree with that either. I've always used my own peepers ... except to keep track of what ferral cats are coming into the backyard at night. Have to admit though, I do enjoy seeing some of the huge animals that people get on film.

    New to hunting. Any tips?

Patience, persistance, patience, knowledge, patience, practice, patience, determination ... have I said patience yet??? Seriously, you need a ton of patience to be a hunter. Also, it can be either inexpensive, or expensive depending on your approach. If you are the type that wants the best and newest toys to help guarantee success, you are going to spend a LOT of money. If you are the type that can leave well enough alone it doesn't have to cost a fortune. Unfortunately, according to my wife I fall into the first category ... . Specifics are hard to come by for any particular unit, usually because folks who know units well have put a lot of time in there and don't want their information to get out and potentially flood their spot with hunters. I do know that unit a bit, having hunted there a few times with a guy who hunts it almost yearly, and there are some good deer in that unit. Spend a lot of time glassing. Those little Coues bucks are ghosts in that terrain. Looking with the naked eye isn't good enough. You'll look at spots and see nothing, when in reality there is something there. The better your glass, the more you will see, but any binos will be better than none for that unit. Be careful in that neck of the woods ... you are right on the border. Only reason I am not hunting down there much anymore. Oh yeah ... and Welcome to THE Forum!!!
  25. Anyone have any ideas about the worth of a Sportorized Winchester Enfield 1917? Venerable .30-06 as originally chambered of course. The action is in decent shape as far as not being rusted or pitted. It has been drilled and tapped for mounts, and I'm not sure I'd call it a stellar job, but it isn't horrific. It's a custom barrel ... though I have no idea whose. It has a Timney Trigger and a sporter stock. Barrel appears free floated other than a cork sheet touch pad. It's been sitting in my safe a couple of years. Belonged to a relative who passed. Figured I'd sell it, but have no idea what to ask. Any ideas? It is not a jewel, but isn't junk either. Just a decent older rifle. Input would be appreciated.
