  1. Okay ... so now that I have a .300 RUM for my main .308 cal, I have been considering re-barreling a .30-06 to 6.5-06 Ackley Improved. This would make use of the great ballistics qualities of the 6.5/.264 bullets, and from what I've read, will give performance very similar to the .264 Win Mag with much less powder. My only issue is that the cases have to be fire formed, and I've never done this. Pretty inexperienced to the whole reloading thing really, though I have all of the equipment and should really be doing to save on $$ and have better performance. I could go 6.5x284 Norma and get similar ballistics (and ready made quality brass), but I think the bolt and feed rails would need to be opened up/modified, and I hear that feeding on those is less reliable due to the wider case and associated transition. What are your opinions? Is fire forming a huge pain in the neck? Are there any safety issues? One guy (Kirby Allen) said just to seat the 6.5 bullet in a .25-06 case and shoot with a medium charge. Does that sound right? Is the 6.5x284 just a better option? Or even a .264 Win Mag? All opinions are welcome. Even suggestions for a different/better cartridge.

Thanks for the info. Looks like my custom might be wearing one when it is finished.

    Weaver Tactical

Has anyone out there shot through the Weaver Tactical? I've been thinking about picking one up for my secondary rifle, and I've heard some good things. Just like to get a review from someone on this site that might have shot with it. Thanks.

    Unit 27 Archery bull frustratons

Sorry to hear that for you Elk hunters. That used to be such a fantastic unit. My buddy and I put our 4 boys in for Jr. Deer in that area and they got drawn. We are headed up there next week. We were wondering what the roads/camping areas are like up high. We used to camp on the forest roads about a mile south of Alpine, but I think those were pretty hard hit. We were considering dropping down to the 4 Bar Mesa, Juan Miller Road area to get out of that, but it is pretty warm down there still. We'd rather be up high if the roads and camping are okay. Anyone have any suggestions? We'd sure like for the boys to have a fun hunt ... cooler is funner. Any tips we could get on what the conditions are would be great. Sorry again that your hunts weren't what they would have been a year ago. Makes you wanna get your hands on the Wallow Fire guys for sure.
  5. Dodson should be given a high post with the ATF to "clean it up". Voth and Gillett need to "SERVE TIME" in the Federal Pen for their involvement, along with the top guys and gals who knew about it (Holder, Napolitano, Whoever). It is a tragedy that a Border Patrol Agent lost his life ... imagine how many other lived were lost to those guns ... their blood is on the hands of all of the higher ups who knew and sactioned this ... all in the name of trying to institute more gun control here in the States (at least that is what I personally think their goal was/is).

    Weaver Tactical

Great to hear. I am really thinking hard about one. Need to try looking through a FFP though ... have not done that yet. Do you find that the reticle dissappears on the lower power? How about the no zero stop ... is that an issue?

    AZ Archery Buck

Great Buck. Great story. Too bad about your Dad "twigging" one. That happened to me once ... didn't know whether to laugh or break my bow over a stump.

This is the smartest thing anyone in this whole post (including me) has said ... RON WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both accounts seem plausible ... like they always say "the truth is in there somewhere.". Who am I to say where???

    RON WHITE MOTION

I love it. I've used it and seen it used. Ought to be close to a done deal by now right???

Amen!!! You've both got it right. Can I get a RON WHITE on that???

    Law vs. Ethics

I have to say I do agree with most of this. And there is an awful lot of examples of things I DON'T DO listed here, because I don't particularly feel they are the right way. If someone else does it that way ... I may not like or agree with it ... but I'm not for passing a law to stop it. Big Government is Bad Government. More is worse. I'd rather try to educate them myself ... if they listen, great. If they don't, I just have to be content that I am following what I think is right.

    What would you do?

That's disgusting! +1 In my mind (and this may just be the way my moral compass works) you get one animal per tag. That means that if you wound and do not recover ONE you are DONE. You owe it to that animal, to every other hunter and taxpayer out there, to do everything humanly possible to recover that ONE animal. If you don't, bad on you ... shoot better. Your hunt is over. Go home and kick yourself in the ARSE the entire way there, and then some more when you think you are done. After that ... get your hunting buddy and your wife and kids to kick you too. Again, maybe that is just my moral compass.

    which gun and why

Man is that a can of worms. There are a TON ... I mean a TON of great rounds, all for different reasons. There are also a TON of factors that makes one "better" than another. Example ... not too many guys talk about the 7MM Weatherby, but it is a GREAT 7MM. Only reason to not go with it over the 7MM RM is the cost of the brass. Put Weatherby/Norma on anything and the price just went up ... CHA-CHING. But it's performance is OUTSTANDING. Quarter Bores are flat if they are the right ones ... .257 Weatherby or STW. AND WHEN I SAY FLAT I MEAN FLAT. But they are small for long distance retained energy (RE). Use them for Coues ... Mulies to a point. But you can't get below a certain RE (1,000 ft/lbs for deer, or so "THEY" say) and expect a clean kill. 7MM/.284 offer a high BC, as do many 6.5's, but they are also more affected by a cross wind than an heavier bullet like a .308 or .338. That and RE are two of the reasons why you see those larger diameters used more commonly in the sniper world (.308 Win/.300WM/.338 Lapua). .338 may not be as flat as some guys would like, and may be too much RE (for some sized game at closer ranges, but at long range with the right case ... wow what a whallop. See ... there are just a TON of options, and all good for different reasons. Of course, someone smarter than me is going to come along and say half of what I said is rubbish ... and that's okay ... I know a little when it comes to this ... lots of guys know more. Get one of everything ... that is my motto!!!

Depends. Was it his property? Did he have a right or permission to build it? That becomes a bit of a tough question. If it was on public land, he had no right to construct a drinker, and his time, money and effort was put in "at risk" ... tricky one.

A .300 WSM is only going to get you so far in either of those locations. .338 is pretty dead minimum for a big brownie (though I've heard of guys going with a .300 RUM or .30-378, which have a lot more pop than a .300 WSM). I'd probably say that a Moose will go down to a good shot with the .300, but I'd still prefer something larger. As for Africa, well you are going to be facing a situation in which there are minimum sizes for caliber on several species over there, and a .300 ain't it. It will work most/all of the antelopes, and several non-dangerous species, but you don't want much smaller than a .375 H&H for dealing with anything large or with big teeth over there. I'd get what you like for the lower 48, and save up for something else if and when you take one of those trips. If the .270 WSM fits the bill and you like the recoil, do that. If it's the 7mm, do that. Personally, if I was doing a 7mm, I'd probably stick with the 7mm Remington unless you just don't like a long action. It has long been on the list of "best all around" ... and though I don't have one, I am considering one strongly.

We thought about coming back with laterns, but we knew the blood trail was fading fast and made a decision to wait until the next mourning. If we still couldn't find it the next mourning in the daylight and giving him all night in his bed, do you think we could have really found him that night? I guess people in 10 just drive roads up and down at the prime time of evenings to harvest elk which is ok. Just don't make sense when I have signs out and the same truck drives past the tank four times and shuts his door right next to the tank. He was being pretty dis-respectful in my opinion. So what would you of done if I beat you to the tank? I'm sorry, but the sign bull shoot stuff has to stop! Sorry if I piss anyone off just my two sense! I think the "rule" is the first one there gets the spot. I'm good with that. If I am planning to hunt a tank/draw/knoll/saddle and someone beats me there, that is my fault, and I don't have a problem finding another spot. Signs don't reserve a spot, nor does an unoccupied blind or an unoccupied tree stand left there the week/day/night before. If you want the spot, be the first one there ... PERIOD. And I'm not talking about some hired representative ... I am talking about the guy/gal who has the tag, is doing the hunting, and is pulling the trigger. That is what good hunting is about. That is my two cents.

Yeah ... I was thinkin' the same thing. Bullies generally know who they can pick on though ... they probably wouldn't try to run a guy off who had the look of someone who would actually hand them their lunch. I remember Lark tellin' that USO story once before ... laughed my butt off then and laughing my butt off now. That is CLASSIC!!!!

Man ... that really sucks. So the thought is that it is a Guide who wants these bulls for his client??? If that is the case, I'd be really pissed if I were you. Total BS. You did your homework. You found them square away. This sounds like the stuff I had heard about the Spider Bull ... interference with lawful hunting. Man that pisses me off. Wish I had a rifle tag ... I'd take you up on your offer.

    dead rockies

That just SUCKS!!! Anyone hear anything about the prosecution of those dipsticks that started that fire? How about the rumors that USFS could have stopped it if they'd have put the fire out when they first came on it? Any truth to that?

I have bonus points out the Wazzoo...all this crap is making me want to put in for rifle cow next year. I was a little leery about my Strip hunt last year being a DIY. I'd heard some of the rumors about shennanigans with trophy class animals...not there specifically, just in general. Pleasantly, all the folks I ran into up there were helpful and nice. Spooking game from hunters is illegal. Gotta call that in if it happens...with description and plates if you can.

    11m/6a RUT

Friday night we went out around mid night toward the southern part of the unit near apache made and located a bull around mid night, he was super responsive so we left him and came back 4 hrs later. Turns out it was a herd bull with cows, and he was goen nuts sat morn but we were unable to get on him. Sat eve we returned to the same place we left him at and their were 4-5 bulls screamen their heads off and fighting the last hr and a half of light!!!!!!!!!! another close encounter but no shot. This morning we were back on the same herd at 4am and were in em big time but couldnt get my buddys 67yr old dad a shot!! were home and hes still up their maybe he will connect theses next 4 days and put one down!!! We definantly had CRAZY rut action the past 2 days south in the unit!!!!!!! Good Luck Wow. Definitely better than what we were getting where we were. The Maid is a bit farther north than where we were hunting. I told my buddy this last week of the hunt was going to be the best week. Too bad he's headed to Texas for work this week.
