    scope for a1000 yard gun

I think there are more than just those, and some for less money too. SWFA is supposed to make a good scope at a reasonable price. Vortex has a couple of reach out and touch models (Razor, Viper PST, Viper HS LR). I have read some stellar reviews of the Weaver Tactical glass, which is remarkably inexpensive. Then you have some of the high end Burris like the XTR, high end Bushnell like the Elite Tactical, and I don't know I'd leave out Nikon either. They have a couple of super high end models that look great. Sightron has some great offerings, and then there's S&B (which I don't think should be left out of the high end discussions). The new stuff from Steiner looks pretty serious too. I've been shopping them pretty hard ... You can spend anywhere from $700 to several grand. Price kinda dictates who you go with really.

    DPMS Panther Carbine AR-15

There are tons of great AR's, but some crappy ones too. Just make sure to read some reviews. You tend to get what you pay for in most cases. Some positive reviews on YHM and Daniel Defense, but those are a bit pricey. Heard good things about Rock River, Olympic, DPMS and some others.

    Laser Rangefinder

Ain't that the truth. Big year for purchases. Scopes may wait depending if I get drawn or not. May end up swapping mine over onto my boys rifles for their Bull Elk hunts. They have cheap scopes and I was thinking to upgrade them.
  4. I read once where the first acts of Hitler, Stalin and Chairman Mao was to disarm their poplulace to take away their ability to defend themselves. Not sure if that is true or not, but it sure makes sense. The whole point of "Fast and Furious" was an attempt by Obama and his Cronies to put American Gun Ownership on the hotseat. That has failed for them, and so our "Demander and Thief" has locked everything down to keep from getting caught with his pants down. Now they are trying to use the UN to do their dirty work. I'm all for praying donniedent ... and it usually helps.

    Laser Rangefinder

So the 1600's do or do not show the compensated difference??? Yeah ... I have $375 to Bass Pro and $300 to Cabelas ... ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH ... wish they were both to the same place!!!!!!!!! So here is the other wrinkle ... I'm thinking of buying new 10X binos too ... and a couple of new Scopes ... my wife is going to kill me ....................................................she's not a hunter.

    Laser Rangefinder

It isn't that I can't afford the Leicas or Swaros ... its that I can't justify spending that much to my WIFE. Also, I can get the Vortex for $399 at Bass Pro and have about $375 in gift cards, so it costs me about $45-50 cash. Hence why I am asking if they are decent and whether it would be a decent upgrade. So given that ... thoughts? Or should I just buy the Leicas and let my wife bash on me a bit???

    Glass Bedding My Rifle

Devcon also makes a Stainless Putty and a Titanium Putty that will not rust if you will hunt in moist environments. A little more $, but worth it for an inclement weather rifle.
  10. Grijalva is a First Class D-Bag. He's also the guy who supported the Feds in their lawsuit against Arizona for SB 1070. I mean really ... why should we decide that if the Feds won't do their job we'll do it for them. It's a shame this State has politicians like this guy ... he belongs in California or Massachusetts.

    Fire Restrictions Lifted!!!

Okay folks ... this is where I remind all responsible campers that managing your fire is VERY IMPORTANT. Too many people leave fires unattended when they hit the sack, or go out to run about on quads or in a Jeep. Camp fires should be properly managed, and that means PUT OUT when they will be unattended. Let's not forget the two Bozos who started the Bear Wallow fire. They say they thought it was out ... I'm here to tell you if they checked it the right way that fire never would have rekindled and gotten out of the ring. Sorry ... one of my big Pet Peeves is people who think they need a huge blaze to enjoy the outdoors, then leave it unattended thinking "it will be fine".

    Craigslist SCAMS

Any of you out there who are selling large ticket items on Craigslist, be wary. I have gotten more inquiries on my quads that have turned out to be SCAMS. Someone sends a response that they want information about your item. Usually is it still available? Do you have pictures (even when they are posted in the ad)? What is the condition? When you respond they offer to buy it using Paypal and have a shipping company pick it up, as they are conveniently out of town. First one of these I got made me leery and I researched. What they do is reverse the charges by disputing the payment through their credit card once the merchandise is picked up by the shipper (who I am not sure is or isn't involved in the scam). Since that first one, I have had 5 more inquiries doing the same thing. One saying they wanted to buy my "car" ... these idiots can't even get it straight on a scam. Last one REALLY PISSED ME OFF as the guy claimed to be in the military and in Afganistan. Dead give away was that he responded to two different ads for similar items in EXACTLY THE SAME WORDING. Using a story that he was military and serving in a war zone really irked me ... Just be wary. You should not accept Paypal for large ticket sales on Craigslist. They warn against it, and I'm here to tell you there are a bunch of scumbags out there trying to rip people off.

    300 um elk load?

I don't know what the difference in energy is at 800 yards with a 180 vs a 200 grain, but if you shoot the 180's well, I'd stick with that. As to the energy, you will get a lot of debate over that issue. And it is really more a matter of how the energy is delivered to the animal that will determine it's ability to get up and go, or to drop on the spot. The better expansion you get, typically the better the transfer of energy to the animal. I love Barnes, and I use them a whole lot. Killed my first big Mulie with a TSX and it rolled up right where I hit it. The knock, however, is that at lower velocities it will not expand like a an Accubond or Partition (at least so "they" say). You get out to 800 yards, your velocity is starting to drop a lot faster than in the first 500 or so. If I were planning a Super Long Range hunt, I might use something that is known to have better expansion at lower velocities. Someone is certain to say I am full of it, and that is fine. They may say 1,000 or 1,500, or even 2,000 ... all numbers I've heard. But if your bullet isn't expanding, are you doing more than just poking a hole? I don't know ... I think you can get a heck of a lot closer than 800 to a rutting bull ... and if you get half closer that Barnes is a winner in my book (like I said ... I love 'em). Then again, if you don't you will need that longer shot ... so ???????????

    Weird deaths!

Back in '93 or so, my buddy and I were archery hunting the Kaibab. After a few days of no luck, we ventured down into a deep, narrow canyon hoping to find some fresh sign and a well used game trail. All we found at the bottom was a 3x Mulie Buck impaled on the branch of a downed tree. Looked like it tried to jump higher and farther than it could. Was probably dead for weeks before we stumbled on it. Should have tagged it....was the only Buck I got close to that trip.

    New Scope for 6mm Rem?

Have not used the Z Plex. I have a Zeis with a Mildot that I like pretty well. Glass is good. Just wished I had known more about scopes when I bought it ... I'd have canned the idea of the Mildot with turrets that are in MOA.

    Guns for Sale

Well ... 12 years after my Uncle (really a cousin, but I called him Uncle) passed away, my Aunt is finally selling off his gun collection. She has several that I am trying to help her sell. I am getting them from her a couple at a time to see if I can't speed things up for her. First Round of Guns: Smith & Wesson Model 19-3. This is a Nickel Plated .357 Magnum with a 6" Barrel and Wood Grip. Comes with a Galco Holster. She'd like to get $700 for that, but would listen to a reasonable offer. I almost forgot ... it doesn't look like it has ever been shot ... or if it has, VERY few rounds. Browning BAR Manufactured in 1968 in Belgium. is a 7mm Remington Magnum. It This is a Grade I from what I have read ... so does not have the carvings or engravings. Just a checkered stock. Gun has some minor wear, but is in excellent shape for it's age. Comes with an older Weaver 3x9. I have seen these guns anywhere from $650 to $900 depending on condition. She'd like to get $700 for this one as well. Other guns she has that I will list later (unless someone has interest now) are as follows: Three Weatherby Mark V Deluxe from West Germany (.257, 7mm, and .300 ... all WBY Magnum). A Manlicher Shoenauer in .30-06 (extremely nice rifle). A Marlin 336 with scope ... shows some use, but not bad. A Berretta Side By Side Double Barrel 12 Gauge ... very ornate. Couple of assorted .22lr ... don't remember the brands right off ... Winchester and one other. Smith & Wesson Model 629-1 ... this one is a beauty ... extremely well kept. 6" Barrel. Seems like there are a few others as well ... have to break out the list. Anyway, I have the two listed at the top of this post with me. Let me know if you want to see photos or if you'd like to look at them. Thanks.

    Guns for Sale

Figured to do it a few at a time ... don't have room for all her guns here with me ... too many of my own. If you have interest in one or more, let me know and I can PM with what she's asking based on Blue Book Values and/or market analysis.
