    Bipod Preference?

My buddy has a Caldwell. He loves it. I am looking at doing one too, so I'll follow this to see the thoughts. My only issue is getting one that would let you kneel or sit and still be able to use prone. Seems like most aren't that adjustable. I never like to force myself into one position. My dad did that on an antelope hunt a few years back and missed an opportunity at a monster because he couldn't see over the grass. If he'd have knelt he could have made the shot. Off hand was too risky due to the distance.

    new to the boards

Jeez ... now I get the ground rules after nearly 300 posts, most of which break them ... THANKS!!! I was wondering why I kept getting PM's telling me to shut my yapper ... Welcome aboard Shaun. I'd agree ... you've found the best hunting site on the web.

    Canned Lion Hunts

Hard for me to understand someone paying that kind of cash for a "canned" or "high fence" hunt. I'd think if you were paying big bucks, you'd want a "real" experience, but what the heck do I know??? It's like these bozos that go hunt farm raised, steroid fed Bull Elk on high fenced ranches here in the States. I've got no respect for such practices. Might as well go shoot a moo-cow.

    Prosecute Eric Holder

Wish I could express myself about this D _ CK, but since cuss words are forbidden, I just don't think I could get my point across accurately.

    1943 Atascosa-Tumacacori Buck

Those are great deer, and what a sweet old rifle. Gotta find one of those to make a .35 Whelen for Elk hunting. Love to hear the old stories about Arizona. My Grandpa was born in New Mexico, but came to Arizona as a kid. He used to talk about the old days "meat hunting" to feed the family. It was good times listening to those stories. Taught me a lot about the outdoors and about hunting ethics. Most of those old timers really knew how to do it right.

    7mm rum vs 300 rum

Gotta agree with 308 and Lark on this. Same case with two different bores ... the smaller bore is going to have the same volume of hot gases pushed out at higher velocity (and probably pressure). That equates to quicker erosion ... and bingo the 7 RUM is known as a real barrel burner. If I were doing something on this case, I'd do the .338 Edge 1st Choice. Maybe even an 8MM RUM (and now thinking about that makes me want to research it). I'd do the .300 next ... and since I own one I am a little biased, but I'll tell you that when that barrel is gone it is going to wear a custom barrel in a bigger bore. If I were doing the 7, it would be the 7 RM. The RUM and STW are just too hard on barrels from all accounts. Plus, in a pinch, you can get 7 RM at just about any WalMart in the country.

Can I get an AMEN Brother!!!
  10. Okay ... I'll bite. .30-06 ... The .270 is a great round. The .308 is a great round. Give a .30-06 a bit more barrel than most factories do, and let it use that powder. Of the three, that would be my choice. That said, my next non-magnum will be a .280 AI.

mom is super happy about first mule deer

Nice Chocolate Antlers on that boy. Very nice deer. Congrats!
  12. Yeah ... had him do a 10/22 receiver. Did a good job on that. Cerakote Graphite Black. Thinking about having him do a pistol next.

    clean barrel bad shot?

I have always been told to never clean a rifle after the last range session before you hunt ... other than maybe running a dry patch down the barrel, which I generally do. I am a believer in this, because I usually do experience a "flyer" or two after cleaning ... not extreme, but enough for me to not clean the guns. This is especially true with a muzzleloader. My Smoker can be 4-6" high and right the first shot after cleaning. After that it generally settles in to nice groups.

    best bang for the buck

If you are a big guy and don't mind the extra weight, find a pair of Minox 15x58ED's (discontinued) ... you can probably get them for under $500 used. I ended up with those due to a money crunch, and I won't ever give them up. Great glass for the money spent.

Coconino ... Dennis is a great guy and does an excellent job on the meat. Really knows his guns too ... great guy to shoot the breeze with.

    What I hate!

I agree ... went ATV riding once with my wife's friend's husband (now ex-). Didn't know the guy, but the wives thought we'd get along well and wanted to start doing family stuff together. I don't normally like to go out and ride with guys I don't know, because I don't know how capable they are or aren't, and don't know if I can rely on them in a pinch. But in the interest of being agreeable, I decided I'd meet him out on the trail and do a ride. Half through the day, this bozo takes a cut across pristine natural ground to short cut a longer route. Probably went 1/4 mile or better on his trek. Me, I stayed on the trail. Later, when we stopped I asked what the heck he was doing taking a cut. Conversation got pretty heated. Needless to say I'm glad that we took separate trucks. Never spoke to the guy again. Thankfully, his wife decided he was a Jerk-Wad and dumped him. ATV's are not for tearing up pristine ground. They are to ride on established trails.
  17. I PM'd an offer on the rifle w/o Scope. Did not get a response. Did you not get the offer, or was it just not the right offer?

big family weekend in unit 1

What a great weekend for you and your family! Congratulations!
  21. Didn't realize they were hybrids. Guess it's a good thing they don't look like this one. Apparently, this gal was bowhunting in Idaho and this beast charged her ... she had just enough time to drop her bow and put a .44 slug in it's head. "Wolves don't attack people..." MY A _ _ !!!!!!!!!!!! This thing is HUGE. And this is the third attack I've heard of in the last year.
  22. As usual, Lark has some really good points. You have to be on one side or the other. You have to take a stand. Best thing we can do at this point is make the Game and Fish aware that the Sportsman in this State didn't support the program in the first place, and won't support it now. Maybe if we are loud enough, someone will listen. Lot of good points on the fees and jobs at AZGFD from Coues79. They are going to work themselves right out of a job by supporting more wolf re-introduction. Really dumb ... and VERY uneducated.
  23. BINGO! A man joining Al Queda and moving to another country to live with them and plan terrorist attacks with them has RENOUNCED HIS CITIZENSHIP in my book. Anyone buy a gun lately. One question is whether you have ever renounced your US Citizenship. It is possible to do folks. Far as I am concerned Akbar Alakazaki or whatever he was calling himself did that in spades. Much as I dislike Obama, he did the right thing for once on that one. Like Bill said ... if the guy had been here in the US, different matter entirely. As for Ron Paul ... guy has some good points and some I don't agree with. If he's the one with the ® at the end against the current guy, he'll get my vote. Problem is that he won't be, and if he runs Independent he's just going to end up stealing votes from someone who might actually otherwise win. Lark hit it with Ross Perot ... pulled away just enough to get ole' Bubba Clinton in there long enough to strip the heck out of the military (one of the ways he got his "surplus"). If RP wants to get in, he needs to run as a VP and do it that way ... it'll take time, but a stint as the Second Guy will cement his viability. I am going to do a lot of reading in the coming months. I want to see what Cain is about. Seems he's the new one people are talking about. I don't like Romney. Perry is no better. Newt is the smartest of the bunch, but totally politically not viable due to his personal issues (and he has some political skeletons too). Bachman ... we'll see. Somehow, someway, we have to get someone who mainstream US Citizens will get behind and get Obama out of there. Four more years with him will sink this ship. Bottom line is we are dealing with a bunch of "Politicians" ... what was it Ronald Reagan once said: "It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first." Truer words were never spoken.

    Stolen

Wow , Smart guy you must be ex-FBI Actually that is a great idea I,m gonna try it. Now if I can just figure out the giant mouse (man) trap! Pete ,sorry for your lose. Hope those loosers get caught! Sure glad you had insurance! The Apache indians used Cholla Cactus , AKA jumping Cactus in man traps-Imagine having 5 or ten pounds of Colla Buds flung or dumped on you when attempting to steal or vandalize....LOL Not an X fed , worse than that! I'd guess Black Ops, but if that were the case that Forest Service guy would have keeled over 5 minutes after touching the handle of your cooler ... I'm gonna use that trail cam trick on our camp this week ... I like that. Hope you get your insurance check soon. Most of that stuff, once it's gone, is tough to get back. Worst thing about it is that once you file a claim, you can't change insurances ... makes it near impossible. My dad had golf clubs taken out of his garage while he was taking the trash to the bin ... saw the guy drive off. 2 years later went to insure a new home and could not switch companies due to the claim. Total BS. I HATE THIEVES!!!
