I am on the southeast side ... Queen Creek. I saw where SGC offers a course for $400 once in a while. 2 Day Seminar. Not sure that it is necessary or worth it. I am going to watch a few videos. Already assembling my parts lists.

That said ... hard to beat a quarter bore for Coues ... less damage ... flat trajectory ... old Weatherby knew what he was doing when he came up with the .257 Wby Mag.

I love my son's new 270WSM ... if I were going today that is what I would take. However, I will be building a 6.5-06 AI midyear next year. Supposed to be very similar ballistically to the 6.5x284, but with a smoother feed. From the research, I really like the caliber.

It has less to do with Sandy than it has to do with the Government (under the Demander and Thief) supressing the actual numbers. The man got his start in Chicago ... would you expect any less than cheating, lying and stealing from him?

Good luck in your endeavor. I will stop in after the holiday ... I always need something ...

So am I just being a hard "A" by saying that if you shoot an animal but don't recover it, you should be done hunting? I've always thought that you should practice your craft and be able to take an animal out with one shot, or at least hit it well enough that you can trail it and put it down (and on your table). Too many times I hear where hunters wound an animal, don't recover it (either because they don't look hard enough, look long enough, or didn't hit it well enough) and then go on hunting until they fill their tag. I don't like adding laws to the books ... I'd like to think we can be ethical enough to police ourselves. I think if you hit one and don't find it, enjoy the rest of your weekend TRYING TO FIND IT ... spend some time in the great outdoors ... but don't shoot at another animal (unless you want to Coyote hunt while you are looking). So am I wrong? Am I just being overly tough on this type of situation? Thoughts?

So it sounds like most people here think that I'm not being unreasonable. @Coach ... 6 days!!!! Now that is commitment and determination. The 48 hour rule is a good one ... you went 3X beyond even that. Nice.

Never said it didn't happen. But I will say that practice, patience and shot selection definitely limit the exposure. Also, a more than casual effort at trailing an animal that doesn't quickly fall should be made. Never had the occaision to have to make the choice, but the question is whether you SHOULD keep hunting after wounding an animal? I certainly never will...but guys I know do. Was just curious for consensus.

Are we sure it was a hunter? If so, I guess Hunter Ethics have slipped hard in that part of the State. Must be someone from District 1 or District 9 hunting there ... (had to slip that in there ... probably belongs in the Political Forum). Sorry about your blind buddy. That sucks. Good luck on the remainder of your trip. Hope your little girl gets a nice one.

Well ... President OBUMMER is already at it. First shot across the bow ... New Defense Secretary Front Runner is none other than "Mr. Swift Boat" John F(ing) Kerry. That ought to piss off about every Vietnam Vet I know (and for GOOD REASON). Might as well put "Hanoi Jane" in charge ... its about the same. And also ... the follow up shot ... the he's conducting the Socialist Summit today with the AFL-CIO, the SEIU, Media Matters and some other Marxist Groups. Let's see how quick he can put the Unions in charge of EVERYTHING so that business goes right down the crapper. Elections have consequences ... thanks a heck of a lot to Ohio, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Wisconsin, Florida and a bunch of other "Swing States" where the Republicans stayed at home because Mr. Romeny was "not Conservative enough". Bunch of dipsticks. Stay home so you don't have to vote for someone you don't fully agree with ... then someone who is idealogically opposite can get in and ruin the Nation. I'm at a total loss ...

Did take Iran long to thumb their nose on our re-elected O'bummer

You got that wrong ... the Official Title is "Demander and Thief" ... -
Fact is that we can blame the Liberal Dummies all we want ... it was the lowest Repulican turnout for any major election in over 20 years. Look at the registered R's in the swing states and blame them. It is those idiots who cost us the White House, and eventually our country. We are headed for a rough time to be sure.

I didn't figure you would bud ... don't worry about it. Have a Nightforce 1 piece coming. I wager that will solve it. If not I'll use the Burris shim rings...there is quite a bit of move in those.

I am having issues bore sighting a NEW TO ME Winchester Model 70. I am waiting for a Nightforce 1 Piece Base that is backordered, so in the mean time I put a two piece steel weaver setup on it. I have tried two different ring and scope setups, and both times have found that the laser dot is too far right in the scope to be able to adjust the reticle to meet the dot. One setup was Zeiss Conquest with 1" Warne Rings. The other was a brand new Vortex Viper HS LR with 30mm Burris Signature Zee Rings. I am really frustrated. I have never had this issue before. Normally things are pretty close, but not this time. Any words of advice???

Well, I bought the rifle from a guy on here who had bought it new, and he had a scope mounted. I would figure if there was a problem he would have said something, or would have taken it back himself, so I think it might just be the bases. I was using temporary bases ... Weaver Grand Slams ... until my Nightforce Base got here (backorder). They are cheap, so it would not be out of the realm of possibility that they would be off. I have bore sighted a lot of guns. Never had one bore sight that did not hit paper at 100. Never had one this far off lasered at a wall 30 yards away either. Just used the bore sight a couple of weeks back on my friends 7 mag and it worked just fine, so I'm thinking its not that. Starting close is a good option, but I'm wagering its those bases. Going to try to get a base from a different supplier overnighted. Thanks folks. I'll post when I figure it out.

Good for you. Too many animals out there looking for a home and don't find one. Hope you got yourself a good one.

I was worried about whether the holes in the receiver were misaligned. It isn't a precise method, but I took a thin thread and centered it on all four holes. There is a hash mark for the BOSS at the end of the barrel. Everything seemed to align. I guess maybe the bases might be off???

I've got a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50mm with mildot retilce. It is a very nice scope ... very clear. Mine has the target turrets, so it makes for a good long range rig ... thought it probably would be easier with a Kenton Turret. I also just bought two Viper HS LR's for my boys. Have not spent much time behind them yet, but they seem pretty sharp. Lots of adjustment, and Vortex makes a custom turret for them.

Not sure the numbers. They came in a single pack for Winchester Model 70.

I bet the AZGFD is a LOT more lenient with self reporters who shoot small spikes of the species they are hunting by mistake. They are probably not lenient AT ALL (nor should they be) if someone makes a mistake, doesn't report it, and keeps on hunting for the correct gender. Good lesson for everyone out there ... ethics and morals don't stop when no one else is looking at you. It's an all the time thing. The parent(s) of the hunter who made the mistake should have known better, and should have instructed their junior hunter on the "right and proper" way to handle the situation. Sad.

Thanks to all. Will do ... hope we have some pics with a Bull or two down!!!
-
Okay ... I'm not asking for anything specific ... Both of my boys have drawn Bull Elk tags in 3A/3C in November. For any of you that hunted the unit already this year, how did it look? See a lot of good Bulls in there? Just trying to get a feel for what we are in for. Hunted Cow Elk in there a few years back, and saw several good Bulls, but year to year you just never know. Thanks.

How much for just the ruger?

Thanks all for the advice. I figured it would be a tough hunt that late ... hope we see some, but the best part will be getting out with my boys and my dad to enjoy some time in the great outdoors.
