    "Good to a thousand" mentality??

At a range ... heck I'll punch paper all day long. Rest, no rest, bench, no bench, prone, seated, whatever. The field is a different animal (pun intended) entirely. Yeah ... lots of practice and you get good at it. But the variables when you are hunting increase. You want to go out and shoot 500, 600, 1000 ... ok. It's not for me most of the time, and I'd say it's not for a majority of hunters out there, most of whom shoot less frequently than the die hards --- many of whom shoot once a year a week before the hunt. I happen to be a pretty good shot with most weapons. I didn't work at it, it came natural. Good enough though that I shot in college on a small arms rifle team. Good enough that most guys I shoot with say I am really good. I still limit myself because I know that the variables can play heck with you, and I don't like to wound things. Some people might call me over cautious ... some might call me a wuss (funny) ... but I do what I do because of the way I personally feel about it. That is self imposed. You might be one of those exceptions ... but yeah ... I'd say that a minority are really good enough to regularly shoot out in that Medium Range Category ... and the guys who can shoot 1000 and more in the field (consistently and with great confidence) are a truly rare bird. Some of them are on here ... and they have my respect. As do those guys who can truly shoot Medium Range consistently and with confidence.

    "Good to a thousand" mentality??

I am sure there are some folks on here that ARE good to a Thousand ... former Military Snipers, maybe some LEO's that shoot for SWAT Teams, maybe some guys who have taken some courses in LR and work at it really hard. They all have top tier guns, scopes, range finders, etc. would be my bet. Fact is, most of us are good to a couple/few hundred...a minority are good 500-700...and it goes down from there. These guys that go out and shoot steel at 1000 yards need to realize that steel doesn't move a the drop of a hat. There aren't many branches, twigs or grass that can affect the path of their bullet on a range like there are in the field. Weather ... not just wind, but temperature, RH and other factors ... also affects things greatly. Taking shots that far may or may not yield results, but my bet is that for most of us it'd be a LUCKBAG shot if we got a clean kill that far away. Best case otherwise is that we miss. Worst case is that a wounded animal hightail's it out of there and we never find them ... they go off and die (what a waste). My motto is that if I don't think I can get a 1 shot kill at the range I am at, I get closer. If I blow it and spook the animal, well so be it. Ideally I'd like to get up to about 100 yards if I could ... I figure if I can do better than that with a bow, why not do it with a rifle to insure the placement of the shot. Have I shot farther ... sure. But I sure don't like to. Canyon shots if they come up ... those situations.

  6. Don't really need it to be deer rifle already have 22-250 Ai,243wssm,25-06,257wby,6.5x55 Swed,6.5-300wby,a couple 270wsm's,30-06Ai,and a 300rum for backup deer rifles. When I go for some prairie dog action 600 rnd days aren't uncommon so looking for another rifle that's easy on powder, barrel, ears, shoulder, and just plain fun to shoot. Some times I go by myself so being able to call my own shots would be a plus. 6.5x300 wby ... now that sounds like a FLAT SHOOTER!!!!

    bedding a rifle

I'm interested to know why someone says they wouldn't take a BB gun to them??? Bad experience? I had a rifle bedded by them. They did a great job on it. Mauser action, so a little harder to work with and he took the time to bed both the action and the bottom metal so they are perfectly seated.

    26 nosler

The trend for officers is 9mm and most departments are going to 9 nationwide. The FBI is going back now as well. The new bullets are earning their keep. Given the choice I would gladly carry a Glock 34 on patrol. Remember in law enforcement shot on target is number 1 priority for the officer and department since misses cost millions. We all know a 40 is a neutered 10mm. Which was developed because the FBI wanted a 10 without the recoil so everyone could shoot well enough to qualify. So cops in the know according to you should carry a 10mm for that touch more energy. Last I checked Special Forces mission purpose is to kill things and break stuff with extreme efficiency. Not sure what other aim they have... Well I'll be damned. I stand corrected. 9mm ARE now finding renewed favor. I haven't been H2H training with LEO's in the last couple of years, so I did not know this. Articles I read said that changes to the bullet construction have improved the damage that the 9mm is capable of, and this is the reason (along with ease of shooting) that it is finding renewed interest. It lost favor at the time it did because LEO's were having issues putting perps down (lots of holes in guys who were still moving well). Hence the 10mm ... and the reduction (neuter) to .40 was because the 10 proved too much for a lot of people to shoot/control (or so I have heard). Even neutered it provided more energy and put down power ... which was the point in the statement. No offence meant to the 9mm crowd ... heck I own one. Whatever you shoot best is what is good for you. I like a 10mm ... I have no issues shooting it. But it is definitely not for everyone. Neither is a .40. I like the .45ACP (just a preference) in a carry, and a .44Mag when I am in dangerous animal areas (again ... preference).

So I have gotten to thinking about this, and the talk about energy not meaning anything doesn't make any sense. Yes ... shot placement is, generally speaking, the most important thing. Bullet construction and characteristics are also extremely critical ... but why? Because these have a direct effect on the energy that the bullet can impart on the target ... especially at range. To those that think energy isn't important I have this question for you. You are a cop. You have a choice between a 9mm (which is widely known to have great penetration) or a .40 S&W to carry. Which do you choose? I'm willing to bet that better than 9 out of 10 cops (who know their stuff when it comes to sidearms), and you if you are smart, will pick the .40. The reason is simple. It has more knockdown power and creates more damage due to the energy conveyed to the target. Yeah ... someone is going to say that Special Forces carries 9's. I know. They have a different aim in mind. Another quick example as I write this and think about it. You are in Alaska in an area known to have large Coastal Browns. You can have a 7mm Mag or a .458 Lott. Anyone really going to bet their life on the 7? They all have their importance ... yes ... even energy.

So some of you are saying that retained and imparted energy isn't critical for a kill? Am I understanding that right? How about for an ethical/humane kill?? Is the "hole" more important, or the "wound channel"? Just curious.
  15. There are locators down there who can image the cables. They should get you "safe zones" to go in. With a house the cables are spaced pretty wide so once imaged you "should be" ok.

    Proof Research barrels

28 Nosler over 7 STW...similar ballistics in a shorter non-belted case. Either will be overbore if you care about that. 280 AI is a great performer with a lot less powder.
  18. Weight Schmeight. Carry it like it is. Seriously though...I have heard of issues with guys fluting factory barrels. Something about stressing the barrel and affecting the harmonics.
