you can lay out a tarp in bed of truck - put down old blankets or an old sheets - lay out the meat - in gamebags and put ice or frozen water jugs etc . and just wrap it all in a big bundle and tie the top - like a giant hersey kiss - you do not care if stuff gets bloody - I have previously poked a few holes in tarp so it won't hold water . the moisture around the meat will be ok as long as its just a few hrs . this will work in a pinch and keeps meat cool and clean till you can get home or to a processor and it's easy to add more ice etc. its a great idea if you don't have the time to debone all the meat and have bigger pieces

I've been doing a little research and what I've found out is a little strange - to me anyway you can go to G&F habi-map and use layers to find units and water Since I have an interest in 10 - wifes bull tag and 9 a friends bull tag u I've been online scouting so to speak Now every unit in the state has a varity of tanks - ponds- lakes etc to help wildlife --not all have catchments Take a minute and look at the ones that are listed - I know not all may be listed for each unit unit 9 has no less than 30 with most of them with in couples miles of the canyon in the upper 1/2 of the unit unit 10 shows 8 with 6 on the BO 6b shows 1 but know of 3 6a shows 2 8 shows 7 but there are like 10 I could go on and list them all what makes unit 9 deserve more attention than others in the state and I don't want to hear about rain fall just curious why 9 seems to be overloaded while others have 1 or 2 and they are bigger units its not like it is real remote either so if one thinks there are 5-6 cameras on every water catchment in 9 then there is about 150 or more cameras up there -- not including all the little tanks that might hold water - due to the rains.

if he had gotten run over and killed by a tour bus - there would have been no fuss

yep 100% correct on rancher digging down as deep as possible to bedrock huge piles of clay and fines just piled and covered over in the berms- when I suggested using some of the clay to reseal- I was basically told that he always digs them as deep as he can and usually after one season of run off they reseal the soil in the area is extremely full of clay I know of one which took 3 yrs and I've never seen it full yet

ok -- they adapt or they may die -- they are creatures of habit for the most part I'm just saying seems like for the general area between the rim country and the canyon - unit 9 has 3 times as many catchments I know of a rancher in 10 who spent 6-8 weeks digging out tanks on his own dime he had cattle stuck over knee high in mud after the rains they couldn't or wouldn't hold water - mostly due to neglect and filled in with wash down soil

mulepackhunter - warm water evaporates faster then cold water I'd say water in a concrete tank will hold water longer and be cooler for the animals - we all know how metal affects the transfer of heat
-
Ok I agree and understand with most of what is being said - animals need water - no brainer But animals will also move / vacate an area to find water and habitat elsewhere! I understand drought patterns etc. even cattle tanks/ ponds dry up - cattle can't move much fences etc property boundaries

i actually thought the second would score highest -- KILLEr 3rds -
pick your area and walk over or hike up to the nearest big hill and glass each draw & ravine - picking apart ever nook and cranny from bottom to top and then start over agin. when you get tired of that spot -walk over or hike up to the next hill a mile over and start all over again ! also makes a difference which hunt you drew early or late and which unit

Next time you have to pay for access and you get your crap stolen - what legal grounds can one pursue to get the fs or government agency to pay for your losses ? payment should come with some form of security! like the tonto NF they claim to have 3 or 4 officers to patrol the whole forest ?? then 3 show up " rather quickly " to remove a snake ?? probably at a lake parking lot !

to bad you can't do the blue dye like they show on TV when a thief opens the money bags - if they open the camera - it spays a permanent blue dye on them everywhere if set on private land be nice to set a few - cheap- perimeter cams to catch these CRIMINALS wouldn't that also be trespassing!?

Caring for game in the field

Hate the smell of dead quail guts after it fermented in a vest for several hrs . it doesn't do the meat any favors either I usually take a minute or 2 between chasing coves to use a pronged fish hook twig to poke up and twist to remove the guts/ intestines then- i'll expose the breast meat and carefully wrap the wings closed around the meat - this will prevent the awful smell later and helps cooling down the meat / bird I've since made a few hooks to use instead of a twig - I made them out of and old plumbers fishing tape I did break down and bought a pocket knife with a bird hook - wlll have to see how it works in the coming season -
its open door - all are welcome

since you have Horses - some of the coolest areas you'll find will be in and around the Pine Wilderness area - not sure how easy it is to get a horse trailer in there as it's been a few yrs .
