whatever the caliper / bullet - rifle - pistol when the shot is placed in the vitals - it will usually mean a clean kill and a tagged animal However -- do not forget good optics are needed to be able to make the shot! practice makes for a better more confident hunter while taking the shot

might be after the extra salty chips - that often go with campouts - lol

just so you know - there are a few articles on rendering bear fat but this makes one say ohhh- it would be worth finding someone to do it if necessary Bear Oil Bear oil which is from rendered bear fat sells for $14.00 per ounce or $0.50 per gram plus shipping Bear oil has many uses. Besides culinary and soap making, it is used in crafts, medicine, conditioning leather and hair, oil lamps, as a lubricant, as a skin softener, in cosmetics, as aphrodisiac and rejuvenator, to promote hair growth and countless other uses.

Start a new Thread - Bob's BS ( bull story ) lol

you can use a spent shell casing to whistle in elk if needed - they may answer to just about anything- goose calls - peacock calls - heard of one that came into camp - stood screaming at a running generator a friend said I snored one in , one night but I can't say its true or not - lol I like it when someone says they were hunting elk and some guy was making the worst sounding elk calls he ever heard - "guy doesn't even know how to blow a call" seems to usually turn out to be a huge old bull - watching young bulls bugle -getting ready to go at each other tearing up trees spar - hear this weird sounding bugle kept getting closer and they basically split - thought fer sure some hunter -- nope big old bull that probably had whipped these young'uns before - they knew his call and decided it wasn't worth hanging around

I have no doubts that 350+ 5x5 bulls are around - so a 370 isn't out of line at all several units around the state that often produce huge 5x5 racks

Bob's on the road home - sure we'll get pictures and story soon !

Ok anybody got any info - I just barely caught the sign as I drove by - traffic didn't allow an easy turnaround so I'm putting out the question to CWT and any locals here . I stopped and chatted with Troy at the chino taxidermy shop but he didn't know much either and couldn't give a number or knew of anyone with recommendations just askin as it's always nice to have a few different processors around don't even know if he does wild game meat

Just wondering what has been seen or tagged in 10 this yr . Tales of no real bugling in and around the s/e portion of the unit . no sightings of hanging elk or in back of trucks heading to butcher No news of BO success yet

coulda been snake bit or battle damage during the rut - was this a dec buck ? (( what unit ! - lol))
-
like most of the posts above - right now bulls are after cows during your summer early scoutings you found bulls - most likely bachelor groups did you find any big groups /herds of cows - unlike those above - great herd of decoys ! - lol these are what the bulls have been seeking during the rut period and have broken up into smaller groups the cows will try to stay in their general areas and maintain normal routine's / travel routes/ bedding and feeding areas- the bulls just mainly follow along knowing where the cows home area is key to the rut bulls will be nomads and if driven off after a challenge they will seek out other areas - often great distances

I have a big igloo that holds 12 frozen milk jugs in the bottom - added all the food I wanted to keep as frozen as possible to be used 7-9 -12 days into my hunt 15 day hunt -- topped off with unopened bags of ice , to be used in other ice chests when needed wrapped with old sleeping bag - cover with tarp - stuck in the shade - tried to only open it once or twice a day as needed. 17 days later most of the jugs were still 3/4 frozen this thing probably weighs 150-200 lbs loaded up so I try not to have to move it much - the iced milk jugs are great for packing in and around meat for trip home - less mess than melting ice and the water can be used for lots of other things

get a box or 2 of Borax and a big bag of baking soda - STUFF IN A GARBAGE BAG POUR/COAT ALL EXPOSED SKULL WITH A COMBINATION OF BOTH this should help to dry out the moisture - where bacteria thrives - it will also keep down the majority the stinking and help reduce a lot of the maggot infestation of rotting flesh easy to do in the field - it also helps to keep the whole thing as cool as possible repeat process a few times and toss away excessive old mixture also expose to direct sun light a few days after process it doesn't hurt to rub this into an old stinking skull - just spray lightly to moisten and the apply it should help if not illuminate the smell

have a safe drive and tag a big one !

really - where do you need a 4x4 ? this is Arizona !! not Iowa I been up and down - some steep - rocky - side of a hill- in wet - muddy conditions or piles of loose sharp rocky crap that no 2 wheel drive would make - if you did attempt in a 2 wheel drive -- the last thing I"d want is to loose traction and slip slid around in a dangerous spot or get 1/2 way up or down and not make it -- in most places - you do not need to depend on 4x4 but in a lot of conditions --- you'd be dang glad you had it!
