First muzzleloader tag and first time unit 33 HELP PLEASE
elkaholic replied to Bowmadness's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
anywhere along the foothills of Mt. Lemon pick a road and drive till up hill till you meet the transition from desert scubs to pine trees - then walk / hike another 1/2 mile over to the next canyon -
there seems to be someone set-up at the first tables with a sled - my last couple visits - you'd be surprised how the majority of the scope / sight-in problems are simple tightening of a couple screws knowledge is where this guy gets it on paper and within 3 shots its cutting the bull at 100 yrds. to many this is like gold as I see countless - guys shooting 1-2 boxes of shells and isn't any closer than when they started . most of the problem with this type shooter - poor optics or form or spazzin / flinchin every shot I still use a blank load to watch a newbie flinch - too funny that little trick can majke a difference of a few shoots or a box or 2 I'm no expert but sometimes paying at little to save on ammo and know the gun is right and any mistakes are not the fault of the gun - goes a long way

I can remember back a few yrs well - back a lot more than a few yrs 2 co workers whom drew archery elk tags - after the season I asked how'd they do I was shocked by the reply - oh we shot 6 or 7 during the season - and finally got one down on the last day straight faced - never blinked - laughed and joked about all the shots taken -- I'm sure that's the way the had always hunted and most likely still hunt like that to this day !

the rag has never been a republican paper - no surprise - total suck up to obum and now hitlary we'll be cancelling our subscription- though wife likes the coupons - which usually pays for the rag

Imagine the surprise waking up to see this in your front yard --- after a lot of elk bugling the night before torn off the 2 in metal mounting poles which were bent in 1/2 somebody was fired up and didn't like the way this guy looked you can see the big holes in the sides and all the dents bird poop too -- it adds to the color - lol

I had the opportunity to spend a long weekend at our property - north of the crockton exit. I could not believe how excited I got to see a herd of elk late sunday evening. Now in yrs past - 4-6 ago-- seeing herds of 30-- 50 or more - come pouring out of the distant timber line was normal - see them in the mornings still out before bedding. the trees on my land would be torn up from bull rubs - hear bugling for hrs - morning and evening in the surrounding land /area during the rut . I regret to say This is the first herd - I've seen in about 3 yrs. now from my porch I have a view of approx. 25-30 square miles of awesome elk habitat - the flats some ridges and hillsides and several tanks in the area let me say agin how excited I got seeing this "herd " I could actually count them on my 2 hands well if I counted all 4 fingers of each hand yes a grand total of 4 cows with 4 calves - exiting a tank about 5:30 those are the first and only elk I've seen glassing in the last 3 yrs - we heard one bugle last yr nice to know the 1600 rifle cow elk tags for the last 10 yrs is doing its job of controlling the elk population Kudo's to G&F - last yr the rangers reported elk to cow ratio out of wack and suggested recommended more bull tags the commission obliged and came up with those 50 muzzy bull tags lets see if they project aa 35% kill - that's 15 extra bulls would be taken . Please explain to me how that is gonna change the ratio in a unit the size of 10 There was no way anyone thought to reduce the cow tags - more cows means more elk guess $$$$ meant more than a rational suggestion or decision.

they have been recommending the elk on Morman lake for several yrs now nothing new - maybe there are other good areas too - shouldn't really effect hunters too much but hey hunters have been known to fling arrows and bullets towards vechiles on roads

says the guy ^^^^ who's first choice is unit 8 every yr.!

KInda one of the reasons I really do not like solo hunting anymore even the junk I have would be hard to replace due to some a-hole liking it while I was off hunting . even my folding chairs but especially my sleeping - food - camping stuff. most of these thieves will take anything and quite often everything but as they say -- " It's the world we live in " plan accordingly - no more " they haven't ever bothered me "-- " YET"
