Time for a new tuck Diesel or Gas
elkaholic replied to AZBUCKEYE's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
test drove a 2017 dually 4x4 3500 today - not overly impressed- could feel a shimmy shake in the truck up thru the seats around 70 mph on or off the gas not as bad in a different lane wondering ifdually axle feels different out on the road not what I wanted to test drive -but that's what they brought out - even though i wanted the regular truck -- then they go show me several of the 3500 trucks non-tandem 4x4 but just to look at ???? larry miller dodge didn't impress me either it did look like with all the options I'm looking for priced right at 60,000 -

Best Practices to Setup and Attach a Trail Cam???
elkaholic replied to rossislider's topic in Trail Cameras
I wouldn't worry to much about cattle - all my cameras on my property for the last 5 yrs have less than 25 pics of cattle at my salt licks and its all on open range ranch subdivision i'm talking 5 cameras taking 10,000 plus pics in a couple months - 9,500 of branchs grass - grass grows and wind can really blow hard- -- the wind will get you - a lot of cameras are way to sensitive- -
Best Practices to Setup and Attach a Trail Cam???
elkaholic replied to rossislider's topic in Trail Cameras
#1 rule don't face sunrise or sunset unless u like glared out pics ^^^^^^ try to angle down if possible - pick a big enough tree that the wind doesn't move / shake camera face camera down or up a game trail straight across shots often get nothin unless you put something to stop the animal clear all branchs weeds grasses that may catch the wind that are within the range of the lenses picture - most people get 11000 pics of branchs or grass moving plain ole tasco - simmons cameras that take AA batterys take great pictures and they are cheaper to buy or lose -
Yeo that's a shooter -- way to get it done

Congrats on a nice bull - good grillin ahead I drew it a few yrs back - 3 different times - once archery bull - twice any elk rifle tagged a big spike and a cow it was a fun hunt- lots of restrictions but easy to follow rules. Not sure about the Commander now but a lot of changes when they had a non- hunter friendly commander It can be a great hunt - great time but when they have field maneuvers it can shut down all hunting- if they have rifle qualifiactions can shut down 1/2 the buffer zone when that tornado tore thru the south side - it screwed everything up for a while too. since i'm only eligible for civilian tags and they cut back the numbers on those-and made changes on leftover applications- I quit taking a chance on 1 or 2 tags for my chances to hunt elk -- better odds on general archery or rifle if you have 6-10 points the depot can be a shoe in draw -- even if there are very limited tags

I've had similar hunts- single road trailhead- cars parked in our place.- what to do its - 1 mile in and then there's a lot of different canyons to hunt. we catch up to them just before it opens up. we chat and actually watcha few bucks go over the canyon ridge to the left. Since they were first- they wanted to go after them - we said no problem we'd try a canyon off to the right since we had a big buck we were after in that canyon anyway few hrs later we heard a boom -- boom -figured they'd scored - about 10 minutes later here a buck bounding up the side of our canyon from their direction - woulda been an easy shot but it was just a forky. the only deer we saw that day- thanks to the other guys going left. we were looking for a different buck we are now friends with these guys - since we will probably meet agin while hunting and exchange "some" information on what we've seen on other trips into the area! just enjoy your hunt- you were successful no harm no foul - congrats to your son- pics always are nice to see!

I call that the spot just above the lungs --- no mans zone - a big void good luck did you recover the arrow ? I hate that thought after a shot-- "TOO HIGH" it happens and it can haunt you - no fun

one can bet money and get good odds that it probably isn't the thieves first time - nor will it be the last EVERYONE knows it elk season in the northwoods especially for people who live in the towns nearby - they've been seeing trucks and trailer s jam packed with gear going by everyday for weeks! most home town thieves know every campsite around and its easy to just drive by -any ole time to get the layout and what trucks/vehicles should be there. It's not rocket science to steal the farther off the main drag the better /easier pickins - so to speak Sorry all the stuff was stolen- the idea of a camp sitter isn't such a bad idea - some use family or friends who just like to hang out . to bad a person couldn't get the money die stuff like in the movies have several basg with the die in it- they open - boom blue paint all over them

patterning the travel routes is a big deal - checking fence lines to see which way they are coming and going off the Depot and the limited area best spots can be along the rodgers lake fence line and the garland praire fence line- that being said s/w corner seems to get the most action for the buffer zone

Not worth the hassle --- Go find a bigger bull I know that's easy for me to say but better than a non recovery bull and wasting 3-4 days tracking and passing on other bulls cuz you know you got one down. No doubt the other arrow flinger is not a hunter and never will be- most likely the arrow in antler was because he missed a bull lying 10 yrds away heres the dilemma - get right on the bull you've just shot knowing its a kill shot - or waiting the 30-40 minutes so you don't bump'm and compound the recovery . in the mean time this kinda stuff still happens I bet more regular than any of us like. I know numerous hunters whom found a gut pile when tracking an animal they shot!!

who, was the bighorn mexico sheep guy ripping people off for cash horns hunts etc chiss ? he got off easy I thk. -- pretty much still hunting/ guiding I believe

state park employees along with park volunteers will harvest the bison -- no time schedule -- all meat to be donated to food banks- indian tribes and the volunteers who help no information if these people are qualified to hunt / field dress and transport the animals - who's paying for all that they turned down the G&F idea of allowing hunters to hunt inside park boundaries!
