Have you ever missed a shot because of a steep angle?

well guys it 's not always related to taking shots with a rifle - I'm an avid archery hunter - I 've taken lots of javelina and a few elk - but never a deer . Now i' practice a lot and concider myself a good archer. I'm good- out distances of 40-50 yrds . I practice all the time on my back yard. this happened to me in wisc. aa long time ago ' - I had achance to go deer huntin - archery Now I've never hunted out of an elevated tree stand - never need to - while hunting in Az. the area was baited so- it was a sure thing - I had shot a few times in my cousins back (from the ground) i was ready. A nice little 3x3 came in - I'm 20 feet up this big tree in a great stand - How easy is this gonna be- I'm think -first deer - first shot - I'm done . -I took my time line up the pin - he can't be 25 yrds away shot right over his back - I'm like no way - i had him - he runs off. Ten minutes later , here comes agin -same spot - ok now way I'm missing agin - shoot- same thing right over his back . Now i'm down to my last arrow - here he comes for the third time a little farther out.- you guessed it - missed agin . I watch him run away - I'm out of arrows , so i get down collect my arrows and climb back up in the tree. he never came back - I'm totally bummed out - how did i miss this guy 3 times . I know the bow is sighted in - I had practiced - so I set get back to my cousins house - take 3 shots at 25-30 -40 yrds- dead-on . i'm like no way . so i set-up the target by the house - ,climb up on the roof and try it agin - i shoot over the target every shot - i get back up - aim for the bottom of the target and sink the shot dead center - i was easily missing by one foot! I know since then that one should never forget to allow for the angle of the shot. hunting with a rifle is no different! Gary -
ok - heres the latest - seller -Dr. Ken Howell, author of the 1987 "Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions" He's 90 in a wheel chair and would like to sell some of his things - he's living in quemado N.M. i had asked for some idea of what he'd like to get for the big eyes - he answered -half-way between felonious and federal heres his comment on the price of these rare optics---- A modern replica is going for $2,000, I'm told. Not sure whether it comes with the same fancy fitted steel military case, but I assume that the tripod comes with it. A friend tried to find (but couldn't) an original Zeiss like mine on-line. He found an American-made Navy version at something between $6,300 and $6,500 — with or without the fitted steel case? I don't know. That's what I meant by "half-way between felonious and federal," though I'd assume that the Navy version originally cost the gov a lot more than it'd ever bring as milsurp. , anyone interested i can pass along info or get you in contact with him! Gary

last couple seasons - weather always plays a key role - we all know, cold - windy -rainy weather means they should be hold up in the draws / caves etc , keeping warm - so we are looking in all the nooks and crannies hoping to see or kick 'm out - after several hrs - we are about to give -up- decide to look at the big hill in the area - guess what - there they are !-right on the very top ,so even piggys can do the unexpected! keep the meat as clean as possible - take an extra gamebag!
-
A trapper I knew would clean/wash the entire Javelina with a strong soap to get rid of the skunky oil before skinning it. I went one better last year and took a fresh killed Javi to the self serve car wash and degreased it and power washed it before skinning it.... The meat really tasted good , even grilled the backstraps were great! I know now to carry some automotive degreaser and 5 gallons of water to wash them up before skinning! guess ya learn what you are taught- i learned the musky oily smell comes off with the hide - why would i waste time washing it! if you spent 5 minutes just keeping your hands and knife clean - you'd get the same results -

"If everyone will still be just as happy for you then why does it bother you if someone wants to post a +? It has nothing to do with someone being shy but you certainly have the right to your opinion. The score of an animal never has meant crap to me but I don't condem those who thrive on it. What the he!! makes the difference what someone wants to post?" +1 i agree - what difference does it make - unless its an official report for the book - I can call it anything i want mines a 120 class buck

thats why we like the whitetail hunts - a really nice buck!
-
come on he was just givin a helping hand by moving the lick closer towhere it should be - by the tank - hope someone knows these guys - still want to hear excuses!- lol and I would say - yes G&F will want this info and photos especially if it is a trail and not a road- off road on atv is illegal - this is great evidence of this type of violation!
-
as long as you have them - post them - you'd probably be doing everyone a favor . as now you've opened the can - pour out the contents! I'm courious to see if I know them! be interesting to see if they see themselves (they could be members here ) and what kinda excuses they have to justify picking up your salt blocks Post'em up!

here you go http://www.azgfd.gov/regs/elkregs.pdf if they keep up with the quanity of hunts - there will be no quality - the big elk herds will be gone ! we all see it - drive the woods and you may not even see any elk i remember stopping and just trying to count all the elk was hard - those times are gone !! if they keep this up it will ruin elk hunting here in AZ ! any you elk hunters who had unit 10 -post here and tell us what you saw this yr
-
1625 antlerless cow tags in unit 10 rifle - Are they out of there minds - they are destroying our herds - there is now way they can recover from illiminating all the cows G$F what the **** are you thinking???!!! even if they only kill 500 thats THOUSANDS of lost elk over the next several yrs! first the 5's then the 6's now unit 10??
-
nice idea but who's gonna drive to flag to sign up? anyway to sign up otherthan in person?-
-
i always take the backstraps - wrap in bacon - slow cookin crock pot - you can use a rub spice if wanted but always great - i usually just use a little lemon pepper - serve with rice or noodles rest is beer brats or some other sausage or cook and shred like stated above
-
lesson for us all - break a window - any window ! cut screen on door - jimmy lock . they need physical evidence - what a joke - hope it gets figured out for you!
-
yep - i stand corrected - they do define road hunting as illegal - guess i failed the guide test - lol you can not look in either direction while driving down the rd - to and from any spot or camp - if animal is spotted do not stop or pursue - even if said game animal jumps in front of vechile - you are a road hunter - oh i forgot i didnt intend to see anything it just showed up!
-
i guess i stand corrected on the issue of g&f defining and stating " road hunting" is illegal so the g&f guy (No names) who loads his atv with freinds and family /with tags and drives around while hunting is illegal also ! i bet -99% of all types of hunters are hunting illegally the way it's stated - interesting
-
nice hunt - awesume bulls - we all hope to experience hunts like this - especially at 80- way to go !
-
"But I know it has been said somewhere that if you are just driving at a slow rate of speed looking for game it COULD be considered road hunting. That was said in the regs." ok - show me! if anything its in the definiton of "road" being maintained for public convience- where if a speed limit is posted and you are driving slow may cause some kind of an accident! Most of us can remember drivin down a rd during season - have g&f drive by and just wave or they will stop and check license - never in 40+ yrs of hunting az backroads has anyone ever mentioned driving slow was or could be concidered road hunting. to the best of my knowledge --I've never seen anything in any published regulations for arizona that the term ROAD HUNTING was defined as illegal! the only mention of roads and hunting in the latest regulations - has to do with hunting from a vechile --- meaning taking wildlife from a vechile- which states - "using a vechile to hunt while traveling on or off rd:and or chasing wildlife with a vechile, both are illegal"
-
we all know its illegal to shoot from a vechile or a maintained road - chasing/pursuing game etc. etc. even the wm guy has to abide by the regulations - show me any item related to how fast or slow you drive down a road while hunting - - which decides if you are a road hunter! !i'd fight any ticket that said i was going slow and looking for game thus -- i'm a road hunter! which is not illegal either - its just a handle we give people whom dont want to get out and hunt, who just drive around and hope to find an easy shot! I know of a time when a guy who was driving downthe seven springs rd - looking out the window was wondering accoss the rd a little sometimes on the left and then on the right - a g&f was approching - stopped and him and gave the guy a ticket for driving down the wrong side of the rd - guy took it to court - judge thru it out - he said i'v e driven that rd and I knowthere are no lines to indicate which is theright or left side besides we all try to avoid the **** washboards.
