info on the 158" monster shot on the Oct hunt?
mcelkhunter replied to AZLance's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
That thing is wicked nasty!!! -
I believe it has more to do with better equipment, i.e. binos, rifles, scopes, etc... and hunters becoming better educated. At least in the group of friends I hunt with it has more to do with becoming better hunters through education and much better equipment than we had 15-20 years ago. Last year a friend of mine and his teenage daughter killed deer at 600+ yards. These weren't monster bucks but this never would have occured if they didn't have the set up to make that happen. Almost everyone I hunt with (except me and I am working on it) have the ability to shoot longe range shots like that. I agree with pretty much all the other comments on here as well except for the one about Bush!! Dick Cheney maybe but not Bush!!

Wow!! that is one awesome buck. You could go a lifetime trying to top that one. Congrats!! -
That is awesome. Who is the artist?

I read in another post about a 158" buck taken in one of the northern units. Could that be him?

You can get 20x pentax for that much. I have used mine for years and have done just fine. I also have 12x celstron that I carry that I am very pleased with. Like you, I just can't bring myself to fork out the big bucks for binoculars.

I don't know that unit but my experience with jr hunts is that they are typically in units that hold good deer. We never had a problem finding deer in any of the jr units we hunted. I say glass a lot, walk a little, glass some more. Unless you son is different than most, sitting for long periods on water will probably bore him. You will likely see more animals glassing than sitting water and just seeing the animals will keep him motivated, at least that is what I found on the jr hunts with the kids I have taken.

Congrats!! Those youth hunts are the best!! My most memorable hunts have been on youth hunts. I have been fortunate to be on many, although have recenlty about run out of kids to take since all my kids and their friends are too old now. Looks like I have to go recruit some kids until my grandkids are old enough to go!!
