I had hounds for 26 years and owned a lion hunting guide service { Western Sky's Outfitter's } for the last 6-8 years that I ran hound's. I know how rare it is to actually see a lion long enough to get a shot at it. You must have a lion infestation in that area and Im sure sorry to hear that. They sure take their toll on wildlife population's and now the wolf has been entered into the mix. Good luck on the elk and the lion, I hope your all successful.

As hunter's we often have to leave things unattended in the field, and due to the high ethical standard's of most sportsmen, never had any problem with it. Unfortunately times are slowly changing and we must as hunters, help police our own to weed out the bad element among us. Hopefully someone out their has information about the incident and will come forward with the information. As sportsmen, we cant afford to have dishonest people in our rank's.

I think at this time I'm leaning towards USGS topo. I need to buy a map of units 23, 33, and 36 A & B. Who do you think gives you the most bang for your buck!!!. When it comes to easy to read and the best topo layout and collars.

I agree wholeheartedly with lance. Unfortunately there are areas, especially here in Utah that people don't know when to stop. I cant count the times Ive climbed to the top of a ridge only too find four wheeler tracks or one parked there with its driver setting thirty feet from it watching for deer. Some people use them responsibly but their will always be those that abuse any right they have until its gone.

Great job Jack; anyone able to kill two coyotes and a lion in the same day should get a free deer tag for next year next year from Arizona Game and Fish. Good luck on the deer after Christmas. I had a little different experience this year with some Berger bullets. 300 RUM, 32" Creager barrel, 1 in 11 twist, 210 gr. VLD Berger, 3525 fps. We shot a cow elk in Utah at 475 yds, she was standing straight toward us. The bullet entered at the point where the neck connects to the brisket just to the left of center. It passed through one lung and proceeded through the body embedding itself just under the skin on the opposite side hind quarter. This bullet hadn't hit anything as far as bone, but it had failed to open up much at all. 50 yds closer and the bullet would have gone completely through the elk length way's. Have you experienced anything like this with the Berger's.

I used to guide lion hunts. Ted Nugent was the first person I took hunting that insisted I package the meat for him. Since then I had several people ask me to do the same. I would personally rather eat lion than bear, bear will walk over fresh meat to get at a rotten pile full of maggots and I cant seem to get past that fact at the dinner table.

Nice buck, and thank you from for taking the lion. That should amount to about 52 extra deer next year we wouldn't have had with him still alive.

Nice buck, Ill bet you had a great time. Now for the rest of the story as Paul Harvey would say. Was it a tough hunt, hot and dry and how many days did it take you to get him.

Unfortunately it's probably too late to worry about the response's given this other hunter. Most likely he wont be back to this site unless he likes punishment. I find that to be the case all to often on this site, If we need someone to pick at walk away and come back when you've found something constructive to say that may be beneficial to someone instead of hurtful. True sportsmen don't eat other sportsmen, We must try to word our comments in such a way as to help someone rather than hurt and offend.

Is a guided hunt as satisfying as do-it yourself?
Thesteeleboy replied to lousyhunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
If a guided hunt was to be considered [not really hunting], Then you going hunting in the honey hole your dad showed you probably shouldn't be either. If hunting is to be considered the location of game only I would assume you probably shouldn't return to the honey hole you found last year either, To do so may be looked upon as selfish or unsportsmanlike, I suppose you would have to leave it for someone else to find now and move on to another spot your not so familiar with. That being said I believe the term [hunting] must surely apply to all that enjoy the great outdoors with a rifle in their hands. The fundamental difference between hunters and guided hunters is the guided hunter pays providing a benefit to the local economy, and the other doesn't. We have all at one time or another went somewhere on a hot tip from a friend or family member. I personally have been on one guided hunt in my life but I was able to afford it only because the guide was new and had never hunted the area or the species we were after. I ended up with nothing more than a camp cook and that was fine with me I had possibly one of the greatest hunts of my life. Guided hunters in many cases bring a lot to the table. First of all most of them that Ive met have a few dollars and are strong supporters of hunting and second amendment rights. We all need to be mindful of the things we say and not offend other sportsman with our own standard's as to how we believe it should be weather it is guided, out of state or out of town hunters. Stand together for divided we will surely fall. -
what is this site designed to be just a bragging board for self proclaimed great hunters to show picks. I had three hunters from Arizona parked in the spot Ive camped for ten years three days prior to the Utah deer season. Sounds like had I been a member of this site prior to that I may have learned to flatten tires and shoot in their water holding tank. Unfortunately I was ill prepared and foolishly went over and made friends. We even went so far as to set around the campfire discussing different areas of the unit. I'm afraid we may have even enjoyed each others company. The information every one is all shook up about here is readily available from www.azgfd.gov . With the information from them along with speaking with game biologists, all of the statistics and a few honey hole locations are available to the general public. That being said I personally don't believe any of its worth making enemies on this site. Be careful not to poke your chest out too far, it may pop and make a mess of your shirt.
