Hi all. This is my first post. I am a long time archery mulie and elk hunter from the infamous Unit 2 in Northern NM. This will be my first shot at the "grey ghost"!!! I'm absolutely stoked! I have a NM unit 24 tag and have never hunted the area. Here are my questions. 1: Where the deer are in unit 24-Not the specific ponderosa pine just general high pop. areas. Can anyone point me in the right direction? 2: What approach you all would take? Spot and Stalk? Rattling? I'm not a purist but I won't hunt from a tree stand. Any thoughts? 3: Scouting: I have two good scouting cams and am curious if there is anything specific to coues that would make them more effective than just setting them on water? I'll only have two days to scout before the season starts on 1/1, so my plan is to have the cameras out in other areas while I hunt. Sorry for all the questions, just can't wait to have one in my glass!!!!

Anyone ever hunted Unit 24 in January? I picked up a leftover coues bow tag. I've wanted to chase them for years, but being from NM Unit 2 I've always chased mulies. Just looking for general info about where to look in the unit, what technique ie rattling, spot and stalk etc. and how to scout. Never went after them but I'm stoked!! Any info would be appreciated, and who knows, maybe I could share some Unit 2 info in trade.
-
PS. Thanks for the info . You ever draw 2 again let me know.
-
Did you get one in 2C?
-
No. I'm just kidding about the deer. I have a huge respect for them, and I'm already addicted-and I've never even seen one!!! That's why I'm even attempting to bow hunt them. I know I'll probably come back to Unit 2 with my tail between my legs, but that's what drives me. I just had to give these guys a kidney shot while I had the chance . I've learned quickly that the best defense is a good offense.

My co-worker here in NM just took this buck last week.

Yeah he has five on that one side. He's nice for sure.

Awsome Amanda! I love the small design! And 5MP is much better than the cuddies on the market right now! How is the trigger speed?

Nice late hunt Bull (pics)

Congrats!!! I say if you can accurately shoot that far go for it! I personally can't, that's why I bow hunt now, but good for him! Awsome bull!!! -
Hate to say it, but most scouting camera thieves take a saw with them. No design I've seen will prevent that. The best defense is to put it where they won't go.......lots of leg work but worth it. I haven't used a chain in two years-just strap it to a tree. I say a little prayer every time I go to get it, but it's worked so far. It's a good way to get in shape for season. Just a thought.

Thanks. I'd appreciate it. Gonna be tough with a bow, but I've wanted to do it for years. You ever put in for 2?
-
Thanks Ernesto. I won't forget the welcome. If you ever need info on hunting REAL DEER ie. mulies in NM Unit 2, you just let me know. To the rest of you......Good job of ribbing, but I give as good as I take. From the sounds of it, you guys might as well start diverting water from the Colorado and start planting fields of Biologic and building heated stands in front of your tripod feeders. Godd luck turning Arizona into another Texas.

Can't help you with fixin it, but I have the same cam and I have two problems with it. Occasionally when I turn it on, it flashes, and the plastic latches are about to bust. You have the same problem? Also, how slow is you trigger speed?I love the small screen for field checking but have to put it on water exclusively to get the animals. That being said it's still a good cam. I just got a Cuddie we'll see how I like it.

Got these a couple of years back. Again not coues, but thought you all would enjoy. I was hiking in when the dark black one was on the water.

I had a very bad experience with Muzzy's on an elk. For coues they'd probably be fine. I like the Montec G5's and the Rocky Mountain "Snypers"-a mechanical. I know I'll get hammered for adding this, but I think the Snyper is the best performing broadhead out there. The only problem is keeping them from expandingin your quiver.

Fine, but in my defense this is a coues information website. I've never hunted them, and I made it very clear that I wasn't looking for specific info. I mean look at what I wrote. How to scout them, what techniques to use in January. I hardly feel that's encroaching on "secret spots". A little, "I like to glass the South hillsides early in the morning, I like to set my scouting cam near ...." would have been appreciated. It wasn't like I was looking for, "Turn right at the big yucca and then ...." You guys kinda seem eliteist. I don't share my secrets with other hunters either, but that was hardly what I was looking for.

Was on a family picnic with my twin boys and wife and decided to leave my trail cam. Here's what I got.

Unfortunately, I have no access to hounds. I'd like to do it "mano a mano", but with no baiting in the state, it would be pretty tough. I think it's a big female, because I've seen some small tracks in the area as well.
-
Thanks, I thought so too.

I can guarantee everyone that that buck is much wider than 30". Harvest him so you can prove me right!!! He may not gross well, but he's got a huge spread!!
-
I'd say he's in the 36" range. What do you all think?
