The October Whitetail hunt convinced me that I need another backpack; one thay fits me better. Any recommendations? I need a tough day pack with side pockets to carry tripod and small stool. Interior should be large enough for a boned-out buck, maybe 110" B&C! Thanks

Just for fun, I may hunt Whitetail this season with a Ruger 77 in .250/3000. It drives a 100 grain Hornady at 3000 fps. It shoots MOA; no recoil to speak of and weighs about 7 3/4 lbs field ready. The more I write the better it sounds! Anyone had experience with this kind of armament?

Thanks guys. I actually have two. I have a take-down Model 99 and standard Ruger model 77 made in 1976. Never hunted with either but use the .257 Roberts and .25/06 all the time. I have no doubt that the .250 will live up to it's reputation!

In reading the fall regs I can see that most of the late season Whitetail units will issue 40 tags. With the limited number of tags for that timeframe, most of us will actually hunt in late October or November. I wonder how big of a handicap this really is. Do good hunters who scout preseason, and during season are out pre-dawn, glass hard all day and can shoot suffer a real disadvantage? Your thoughts and experiences please thanks.

I finally drew a late season Bull Elk tag! My question to those with 25-06 experience and only those with this experience; am I making a mistake if I take mine when loaded with 120 Nosler Partitions or simular bullets? I know its the guy behind the gun and that placement is everything but what has YOUR experience taught you Thanks!

Your hunting 36B and want to know where you won't find illegals? I suggest the Border Patrol check point on I-19. At least those are under detention. The entire unit has trails/pockets of illegal activity. My suggestion, hunt the North rim of the Grand Canyon next year!

That's a great story and I doubt the most seasoned hunter among us could have done better. Now you know why we hunt the little ghosts of the desert!

A few years back I had a archery cow Elk tag in 6a. So I'm sitting in my ground blind one evening reading my paperback book and glancing up and around every few minutes. After about two hours of seeing nothing, I look up to see a nice cow standing broadside at about 20 yards. How she got there only the Man upstairs knows.But probably confirms my wife's belief that my hearing has suffered from too much exploding gunpowder. I lay down my book pick up my longbow and now see a calf nursing from the cow! I could not do it! They both walked off shortly thereafter. After reviewing this scene hundreds of times in my mind, I've come to the same conclusion; I don't need the meat that bad. I would pass up the shot today.

For my birthday I received news that I drew a Whitetail tag and my wife bought me a new rifle. ( I strongly suspect she had help). The tag is for 36B; the rifle is a Remington 700 CDL .25/06. Anybody use one of these on Whitetail? If so what handloads work for you? Thanks
