What rifle is better!!!
desert ranger replied to Coues Archer's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Well here is my two cents worth. I've used the .270 Winchester pre-64 featherweight with a 2.5/8 power Leupold scope in a synthetic stock to complete a grand slam of North American Sheep and Deer. Additionally it is responsible for the harvesting of more than 20 Coues Deer, about that many Javelina, 4 Pronghorn Antelope, 2 Elk, a Black Bear, a Mountain Caribou and a host of Coyotes. I'm not bragging, many of you have taken a greater number of game. The point is simply this. Game is taken by putting the right bullet in the right place by more calibers than have been listed in this discussion. Many calibers from the .243 Winchester to the wonderful .375 H&H will accomplish the mission. We as hunters need only select one and get to know it as least as well as our spouse! -

O.K. here's an alternative that works for me. Pronghorn 60" three piece 54# takedown longbow 29" 2016 Easton Legacy arrows, 3ea. 5.5" shield cut feathers Magnus 125 grain 2 bladed broadhead Elk, Javelina, Rabbits etc. think the above should be outlawed!

minimum caliber rifle for deer
desert ranger replied to BigBfever's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
For years I have labored under the empression that in my native state of Arizona only the .257 Roberts is legal for the taking of "BigGame". Guess those on the wall of my hunting room may have taken in error! -

desert ranger replied to lfootmatt's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
With my Ruger #1 .257 Roberts and handloaded 115 g. Nosler partitions: 1 6pt. bull elk (about 200yrds) 1 cow elk (about 80 yrds) 1 83 pt. pronghorn (312 yrds) many javelina (close to far) 2 4pt. mule deer (about 220-290yrds) 7 whitetail deer (real close/you would not believe how far) coyotes-yes 1 turkey (when rifles were legal) other things! Think about it! -
I'm rather new to this website and just wonder if there are other traditional archers here. Bowhunting starting with a 25# longbow has been an interest my mine since I was about 12. About 9 years ago I returned to recurve and longbows and am having the time of my life! Anyone else?

Stinging and Biting Critters
desert ranger replied to Mr. Jonathan's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I'm a park ranger in central Arizona. I'm "out" meaning in the desert mountains most days and have been since I was a boy growing up in Tucson in the 50's. I've seen rattlesnakes EVERY month of the year. This includes February in the Rincons with patches of snow on the ground! Having said that; most rattlesnake enounters occur when temperatures are in the high 70's and above. In other words, rattlesnakes are most active in warmer weather. As I tell our winter vistors; rattlesnake activity is temperature not seasonally driven. Keep in mind that most bites are to males between the ages of 16-30 who are on a substance (usually alcohol) and think that playing with snakes is a macho pastime. So as mature, rationale beings, just exercise good judgment and enjoy your hunt! -
A true old school coues hunter
desert ranger replied to longshooter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Your grandfather actually appears to have had a lot going for himself. First, he appears to be in excellent physical condition, secondly the brimmed hat (a la cowboy style) helped keep the sun out of his eyes and off his neck, ears, etc. Third a .300 Savage makes an excellent mountain rifle, in my book, even in these days of magnum thunder. Lastly the nice buck he is carrying says that he did something (s) right. As you can tell. my hat (brimmed) is off to the gentleman! -
Hi Skyhawkbowhunter! I drew a late December tag in 36B! If your around I would enjoy breaking bread, sharing a beer, or talking about how Ruby etc. were when I began hunting/ fished the area in the 60's! Oh, I got my best to date Whitetail about a mile out of Arivaca eight years ago (107+). Thanks for your invitation!
