Ever heard of a Mtn Killing a Mtn Lion?
GRONG replied to az4life's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Hey no problem, I had no idea you guys/gals would like it that much. It's been on my website for years and no one has ever said a thing. Back in High School I showed it to my art teacher and he about had an asthmatic attack or something. He played on the far left side of the fence if you know what I mean. I just thought it was a kick butt action shot like he asked us to bring in and draw. Whoopsidaisy. This picture made the cover of the dog magazine, Full Cry, several years ago. Josh -

Mike, I'd say that those are the reigns your are seeing and not guts. JMO. Josh Here's a tense picture my dad took back in the 80's. Lion isn't wounded or anything, it just happened to run right back towards Dad and the dog was just an innocent bystandard and got tackled. It all took place in about a second but Dad happened to shoot this pic from the hip and it came out awesome. -
Whoops, here's the pic. Oh ya, and I saw 3 brand new scrapes during the hike also. I'm getting pumped!!! Josh

I got out for the last bit of the afternoon today and saw 2 bucks. One was a decent low to mid 80's 3pt and the other deer was very big bodied but he was gettin through the trees and I couldn't make out what was atop his noggin. I'd like to say it was a non-typ 140" buck but it probably wasn't. I was out checking my salt lick and the cattle are tearing it up!! I hate them suckers!!!!! I hope they're out of there before the rut starts. I did find a cool shed and a kind that I've always wanted to find too. I've seen a few skulls with this before but have never been able to find a shed like it till today. It's got a two point frame with a big bladed eyeguard with two cheaters behind and on inside of the eyeguard. Pretty cool. Josh Epperson

Unit 28 Early Hunt (Success Photos)
GRONG replied to ScottAdams's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Dude that is freakin awesome!!! Making me jealous. I've been up on the east side Kaibab chasing carp deer and missing out on the Coues action. LOVE the non-typ buck, one of my goals is to kill a buck that has an elbowed beam, or one that drops down from the base and then comes back up. I saw one last year that had both antlers dropping off the sides of his head and then coming back up but since he was probably a year and half old I couldn't get myself to take him. Maybe with my bow this year eh. Congrats on the hunt and thanks for sharing it with us. Josh PS: Those coffee thermoses stuck together are amazing!!!!!!!!! -
triton, WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Pictures man, pictures. Don't tease us with monstrosity and then leave us hangin. Josh "waiting for a picture" Epperson

Hey Ken welcome to the site, hope you've learned a thing or two. I will say that I'm fond of NRs it's the USO deal that most everyone here is ticked about. Hey I just guided a husbad and wife from AK on an archery elk hunt, maybe you now them....... just kidding. Man I hope you have some great luck down in 32 in January. I haven't hunted 32 in 15 years but I frequently hunt 31 and 33 nearly every year. Either of those units you shouldn't really have a problem finding Coues deer in. I don't know why but I'm getting good feelings about this year's upcoming rut. Good luck and let us know how you do. If I can do anything to help you let me know. Josh Epperson

36 is from the east side of the hwy from Carrizozo south to Alamagordo. The hwy that goes from Alamagordo to Ruidoso is the southern boundry. The hwy from Carrizozo east is the northern boundry. I think just about everything from Ruidoso, west is 36. The Mescalero Rez is on the southeastern side of the unit. AWESOME COUNTRY! If you're down around Carrizozo watch for Oryx along the hwy, they're pretty cool looking. Josh

TRAIL CAMERAS ARE ILLEGAL!!!!
GRONG replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Brain did you say "his forest"? All them circus workers think that it's their forest and not the public's. That's why they want you to pay a daily or yearly fee just to enjoy a day out on public land. Ooops, my motor gets running talking about fees just to see the forests. That same thinking of the district ranger goes along with AZG&F, it's their animals and not the public's. OK, I'm stopping now. Josh -
Happy belated BDay Amanda. Hope you had a good trip. Josh

Az4life, I just clicked in the link you added and I about fell out of my chair laughing. Good one man. Too funny!!! Where in the crap would you ever get a picture like that? Wait.... maybe I don't wanna know. Did any of you happen to notice the grabberpickerupper deal on the shelf above him cause the poor guy can't bend over to get stuff? That poor chair!! This is the first time reading this topic and I'm not sure what some of you are fired up about but I just had to respond about that link. Freakin hilarious, but not to offend CHD since I haven't read any of what some of you may be talking about and I don't know the man. I don't even want to get involved, I've seen this kind of stuff on other sites and I don't even go to those sites any more because of it. See you guys, Josh

I do remember you seeing one the day prior to the hunt, I got it on video sitting there with you and Geoffry, it was about 2-3 canyons north of us at the time. We went to Glenwood bought deer tags and inquired about lion tags. They told us there was a 5 day wait till we could hunt if we bought tags. We all called BS on that and went back to deer hunting. Opening day I killed, the next morning we saw the 4 you mentioned. I just can't recall any other. It's official...... you're lying! Just kidding. I know I've seen quite a few lions in the past but I can only recall about 10 or so. I'm still trying to retain all the antlers I've seen in my head so don't jumble my brain with anything else. I've seen so many antlers in the past 4 years though, I think I'm starting to lose it. Lions don't mean jack to me so I don't remember them all. The reason you've seen that many without dogs is cause you haven't hunted with dogs enough. If Andy gets his pack goin you'll hopefully be seeing a lot more of them...... and dead ones at that. Just don't tell wildman Clint. Josh PS Anyone interested in a tough butt hunt for bears should go to 36 in NM. To quote a guy I know over there, "36 is inundated with bears". The country is STEEP and not for the avg hunter as it'll kick any seasoned hunters' butt. It kicks mine but I love it. When the pears aren't in they're eating the juniper berries and vice versa. I've seen more bears there than anywhere I've ever hunted. It's better than bears in the pears in 27, in AZ, on an acornless year! I've hunted there the past 2 years in a row for 2-3 weeks at a time and if I was a bear hunter that's where I'd go. JMO

Oh snap CJD. You're too nice. We've shared some good shed hunting and archery coues hunts in the past. Hey send me whatever pics you're talking about above, I called commspeed and got it all worked out. I sent you a personal email earlier today. Congrats on the butt nuggets. I found 3 coues sheds yesterday, all ancient though. Josh
-
To correct you Redbeard, we saw 5 lions not 6. I know cause I have everyone of them on film. Josh
-
Heck if you want to see some amazing country try unit 36 or 34. No Coues but there are some decent mulies in there. You may just see a northern whitetail in there too. Buy a bear tag cause you'll see PLENTY. Josh

I'm game. What about Road Kills? And I don't think that I'd agree with GNOTO about Coues appreciating it though, since they have to pay the ultimate price to go into the book. LOL. Josh -
I'm with you Bret, I think the main frame score is around 385 add the junk and I'd guess a gross of 415". What a bull. I'd guess the left G1 to be 26". You can bet your balls I wouldn't call AZG&F if I found that thing. Just like Lark said above, it depends on who you talk to. I know what the law is and I also know that there are some wardens who'll enforce it and some that don't give a care. I'll take my chances with them coming to my house to confiscate it. Josh
