OH GOOD LORD WHAT IS GOING ON!?!?!?! H.C.C. who are you man? PT? LETS SEE SOME PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I believe you on the score of your deer Amanda but jeez he looks a lot bigger! What a whopper deer! Don't think I coulda passed him! Your friend's deer is just stupid big, dang!!! Congrats!
-
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Steve you're a riot! Amanda you must have to much time on your hands to search for what color shirt I wear often. It's funny cause a lot of times I do notice that I'm going out hunting "again" with another orange shirt on. I like my new orange one, it's a Club Gitmo shirt from RushLimbaugh.com. "Club Gitmo... your tropical retreat from the stress of Jihad" Actually the reason for the orange and brightly colored shirts I wear in the woods often is so that whomever I'm with can see me easily whether we're hunting or shed hunting. Camo makes a guy dissappear and I don't want that to much. Oh ya, now that I look at your second link Amanda, that shirt I'm wearing in those pics was pretty darned red, not totally red but almost.
-
Dang Josh I wish I coulda been there to see all the action. That Hap can outright MOVE a track can't he?!?!?!?! UNREAL to see a dog work like he does. Congrats man! Dad won't stop talking about how much fun he's had with you the past couple weeks.
-
Alright Darren, I just went back and looked at all the pics I've posted in the past 3 weeks and no other pics show me in an orange shirt other than these new ones. I think you may have to many gall stones fogging your memory........

Andy, did I mention that I hate you? If not, I hate you!!

C/W member says his card got hit
GRONG replied to Huntn coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I got hit for $114 on my card!!! YES!!! It's been 5 long dang years and this year something's gonna hit the dirt! Might be me but I'm gonna give her heck. Actually I hope I don't jinx us cause when I had the tag last it was that NASTY droubt in '02 and it sucked out there. COME ON RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck all! -
Oh man that killed me! I woulda kicked him off my sleeping bag knowing that any second he squeeze out some soft serve right on my pillow.......... HAHAHAHAHA!!!
-
A couple of you have asked what a lion scratch is so yesterday while shed hunting I took a couple pics of ones I saw. Hope this helps some of you out.
-
This kill was completely covered and only a little of it had been eaten. The night this pic was taken she tore it all up and unfortunately moved the kill out of the view of the camera!
-
Have you found that they visit a scratch at any type of interval, or does it seem completely random? If you knew he was coming back every 5-7 days or something like that, it'd be worth sitting on. If they visited scratches on a regular basis I'd show you many many pics of dead lions. Unfortunately lions are so dang random it's almost impossible to pattern them. Like my Dad says, "A lion is not that smart, it's just they're nature that keeps them alive". That pic I got on my trail cam last week of that tom, was in a place where he'd been scratching nearly every day for several days. Just when we think we're gonna catch him he doesn't show up for 2 dang weeks!! Since that picture he hasn't even been back. I think these pics of the scratches might be from a different tom though. Never know I guess.
-
That's it Darren!!!!!!!! No more of those late nights together measuring wt racks!! You're CUT OFF!
-
Ya Mike you're right, I guess I should've elaborated a little more on what a lion scratch's purpose is. Quadless country INDEED! I hate those things that's why I stick to the big canyons. A lion scratches to mark his territory. A lot of times he'll scratch in the same spot each time he travels through that area so it's a good place to check if you're hunting them or wanting trail camera shots of one. We've learned, through using trail cameras, that a lion doesn't always scratch each time he travels through. Many times he'll come check the scratch and move on without making a new one. Hard lesson learned there!! We thought that if he didn't scratch then he didn't come by yet.... WRONG!!! Now we check the cameras to make sure! You can also tell which general direction the lion is headed after he's scratched. The mound on the scratch is the back of it and in these pictures I've posted the lion was travelling up canyon. A lot of times you'll find a scratch without finding tracks. Once you have then you know which direction to keep your dogs working. We've trailed lions for half a day w/o knowing if we were going the right direction or not. This can happen a lot when trailing females cause they don't scratch. Anyway, hope that helps.

Appreciate all the comments guys. You're right that it is a little better than decent but after seeing what Littlebear & Co found today it looks like a dink.... just wait, he'll post pics of that pig on here sooner or later. Bret, you're probably right but I did find a 108" rack in the area several years ago that had matching points in that same general area so you never know. And Jim I NEVER sell any of my coues sheds! I'd sell most of my best elk antlers before I did something like that. Like you say, there's just something about them little fellas. Over the past 18 years of "sheddin" I've collected about 150 or so sheds, I guess that'd work out to about 8/yr on avg. I hit it pretty dang hard on Fri and saw about 25 bulls, 6 had no antlers. I kept my distance from them and shed hunted around them and found 3 old chalks, one year old shed and finally my first brown one. Did glass up a decent year old shed but it was right among the bulls so I left it there till next time. Saturday I glassed up a set and two singles. I hiked clear to the bottom of the canyon, again, for the set only to find out it was way chalked out so I left them. It was a nice 335" 6x6, bummer! I think for now on I'm gonna leave my binos at home cause they sure make me hike a lot. Hiked around and my friend Gail and I each found a shed off of a year old heavy 5x5 set. Probably 8lbs a piece I'd guess. The hike out was NASTY! Brush was way over our heads in places. That's why it took us so long to get the heck out of there. Here's Gail hiking out with the big 5x5 set.

Whoops a daisy there Dewey! Sorry I hadn't been back to your first post in a few days. Holy crap that looks steep!!! I love it!! Love all the pics man keep em coming!! I'm gonna try to get down there in the next week or two. I'll let you know when I do. That country behind you in the picture looks INCREDIBLE!!!!! It reeks of coues deer!
-
That's awesome!! It's neat to know that a lion would sit there at water, like we would, waiting for a buck. Too cool!!

My friend Gail and I went out yesterday to the same ol canyon that we pulled those sheds out of a couple weeks ago to look around a little and glass for elk or antlers. The day turned out better than either of us hoped. We sat on the edge of the canyon glassing for a long time when I spotted a shed laying in the manzanita brush on the opposite side. After about 10 minutes Gail glassed up the match to it about 20 yards away laying in a rockslide. All we could see was the top end of that one but it convinced us we needed to find a way off the cliffs and get down in there cause it looked like a heck of a set. After about an hour or so we finally found a little tight chute thru the redrocks where we could shimmy down. Here is the one Gail glassed up, as it lay. And this one is to show how steep it was where the antler was laying. I'm pretty sure that the bull was walking along the elk path on the ledge above when he lost the antler and it rolled down the cliff a ways, cause the other antler was on top the ledge. Very nice 6x7 set, I'm guessing it's pushing close to 350" We found a couple others on the way down the canyon and here's one I glassed up about 3 weeks ago that I finally got to. And then Gail walked up on this cool find a little ways farther down! Here's Gail with the days finds. I think in all we found around 9 sheds and carried out 4. Had to leave the nice rack cause it woulda been super tough fighting that thing out of the canyon through all that brush. We finally got out of the canyon after dark and made it to the quads. Hope you all enjoy

Ya Dave I've got a pretty good idea. I've been buying antlers and picking them up for many many years now and small to medium bulls drop into April. I can't tell you when a particular bull will drop but generally the same size bulls drop in the same time frame. I've seen 340" bulls still packin around April 1st too and that blew me away cause they're usually dropped by mid March it seems. The absolute BEST time to go shed hunting is late April cause 90% of the elk have dropped by then. People get so darned greedy that they want to be the first one to find the brown horns and I totally understand it but if everyone left them alone till then EVERYONE would find more antlers. Back in the earlier 90's when horn hunting was just getting pretty popular I could still leave the wintering herds of bulls alone. I got into a good area on April 14th and picked up 16 browns and 1 year old shed in one day!! I had to make 3 trips to the truck packing them out but it was well worth it! Now had I been in there every weekend busting brush and bumping elk constantly I can almost guarantee I wouldn't have found 1/2 of those antlers. Wish I could still count on that kind of stuff but there's just to many people out there nowadays. I just do what I can now. Darren, if I'm lucky I can only get out one day a week now as my business has totally taken off and with the family it makes it tough. I'm not complaining though as I wouldn't have it any other way. Hope you get out and find a few this spring. Thanks for all the comments!

Any More Cool Trail Cam Pics
GRONG replied to GameHauler's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Ya Dave we knew he was there. We set the cameras under trees where he'd been scratching every time he passed by there. I have another camera hanging just up the draw from there and he scratched at that tree too but the dang batteries were dead so I didn't get a thing dammit! Once you know what kind of areas and sign to look for when looking for lions it kinda pops out at you when you see it. Bottoms of draws under big trees is a good place for a lion to scratch. Also along rims under the larger trees too. It's not always the rule but when there's a tom in the area he can't help but scratch under a big ol lone ponderosa tree. Watch and you'll see. -
Ya Jim it does have one of those damaged pedicles, good eye! I used to have a big pile of them here at the house but last year I finally sold them all cause I realized that they weren't all that uncommon. They're still pretty neat though don't get me wrong. "It looks like that bull was shot and then fell over backwards and died that way. I have never thought about hitting those deep canyons when looking for sheds, but I guess it would be worth it from now on. It amazing how many big elk are using that area. David" David, actually I think some hiker had found it previously and propped it up that way. They probably realized the same dellima that we faced, trying to get that thing out of there. From all the elk we've seen in there in the past month, which is only about 6-8, and we haven't seen anything better than a nice 5x6 and none that look like they'll shed anytime in March that's for sure. I'm pretty sure that nice set I'm holding was shed about 2 years ago. They're kinda chalky on the up side of the antler but still in pretty good shape. Luckily they weren't shed in thick brush otherwise the rodents woulda chewed the crap out of them.

GRONG replied to GameHauler's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Way cool pics!! Here's a lion pic I pulled off my camera yesterday. He'd been there just the evening before. To bad Dad and Andy weren't around to do anything about it. Losers............
