Mexico Coues'n with Reynaldo yet again
GRONG replied to GRONG's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
Oh yeah.... You could've sat this field any day and shot at bucks with your bow! No telling what could walk thru at any time. I was only set up for rifle, had I been bowhunting I would've been on the opposite side in a blind under that big lone green tree in the first picture -

Been hunting a lot lately so haven't had much time to post the goins-ons. Just after Christmas my buddy Jimmy May and I took off to camp for a few days. First morning out we hiked our tails off to a spot I've been wanting to check out for a while. We glassed a few bucks a long ways off and they were all ruttin their tails off. About 9 am this heavy buck Jim spotted had clashed heads with a lesser buck and they fought HARD for close to 10 minutes. I was able to get the last 5 minutes of it on video which was awesome! There was a smaller 2pt in the mix trying his best to be the biggest pest he could be as well. After a while Jim decided he'd try to get close and see what he could do. I gave him a set of rattling antlers too just in case. Jim got set up and the wait began. The heavy buck with it's doe hung up in some junipers a couple hundred yards away. That small 2pt kept being a pest till the dominant buck finally gave him a good run and pushed him away. When he did this the smaller buck came to the edge of the clearing. He had that, "Well who can I go screw now", look on his face. That's when Jimmy hit the antlers together for a few seconds. That buck looked the couple hundred yards across the open bowl towards Jimmy and here he came! He only paused one time in the bottom for a quick drink in a pot-hole and kept on coming. I was watching all this from above just a couple hundred yards away and was getting way excited! Finally the buck went out of my view into the big trees and it wasn't long after that I heard the hit and saw the buck run! It only made it about 30 yards before eating dirt too!! Jimmy said that he kept having to grunt at the buck to get it to stop and when it did it was at 20 yards! He made a great shot through the heart and tagged his first archery deer, a Coues buck no less!! Way to go Jimmy!!! Some other bucks we've seen in our days out so far. This is a big 2pt I thought would go close to 90" Here's a gorgeous 3x4 I missed a few shots at.... I completely WHIFFED the last shot he gave me at 30 yards! MORON!!! So embarrassing...... Here's another big 2pt framed buck. Wish'n someone would've shot a few big 2pts in there to get them out of the gene pool. He made for some good pictures though.

My biggest Coues shed is from 4a, 59" I've seen pics of bucks that live in a small community up on the rim off Hwy 87 too. I've always believed the biggest bucks in the state live in the pines....

Ya man post a pic for us to see it. I found a deadhead many many years ago that is 17 3/4" inside but never measured the outside. Ok, just had to go measure it out of curiosity, 19 1/2" outside. Back in the mid 90's I measured a guy's 2pt buck he shot with a muzzleloader in 6b and it was a solid 20" wide! I think it went a little over 90" but was stupid wide. Would love to see your pic man, if you need help posting it, send it to Amanda or one of us and we'll do it for you.

Been looking forward to Dad's hunt for quite a while. Dad passed this buck Friday morning in hopes of finding a bigger buck. I told him he was nuts but told his friend Dave that it was his lucky day. We put a stalk on it he and ended up missing 4 shots at 350 yards. On Sunday we got on a really big 5x4 that Dad had seen during the archery hunt but things didn't work out too well. 2 other hunters' hunting style didn't go over to well with how we would like to hunt. These guys split up on separate ridges and talked back and forth to each other the whole time. The eventually blew a groups of does out and they spooked the big one. Boy was it frustrating..... Monday morning I went to a spot to look for the big 5x4 but never even saw a buck. Texted Dad and as of around 8am he hadn't seen a deer yet. Was thinking of moving when I heard a KABOOM!! I waited for a bit and BOOM-WOP!!! Could tell the 2nd shot connected. About 30 seconds later I got a text from Dad that said, that was me! A cow was staring at something below him all morning and Dad could never figure out what it was. He happened to look down again and caught a glimmer of antler of a buck bedded below him at a little over 200 yards! First shot missed and a buck came running out and took off. A 2nd buck got up and was making it's escape when Dad connected on that one. I had a bit of a hike and a 30 minute drive around to him and I finally got to see what he shot. It was the buck he passed opening morning! What a gorgeous buck it was too. I guessed it around 150 when I saw it alive on Friday but knew it was bigger standing over it. Haven't had a chance to measure it yet but it's probably mid 160's I'm guessing. Congrats Dad! This was also my boy Isaac's first deer hunt to attend with us so that was pretty special for sure. He had a blast too. To bad he had to get back to school on Monday when Dad shot his buck but at least he got to be with the guys for a couple days. First night in the wall tent. Isaac getting lessons on firearms safety and accuracy with the ol .22 I would glass, Isaac would excavate.... We sat around the fire, Isaac made his own..... Isaac found his first mule deer antler all by himself. All that hard work makes a boy tired.... Can't wait till next year!!

Ya those elk will eat anything, seems like right now there's a special runnin on juniper berries cause they're hittin those hard! I don't see how it's possible to go to 6a for 2 months and only see 15 elk though.... Either you've got horrible luck or you're sleepin in till noon then glassin the middle of the day, LOL!!!
