Well went out yesterday with my other little brother, this one is nine, and called in a double on the third of four stands. Came in about a minute into some jack distress on a custom cow horn tip call. Well i had them at about 250 yards on a hill to the right of us, put the crosshairs on the largest and shot. Well all heck broke loose because i made a bad shot and got him in the rear leg, and well...finally figured out on the fifth shot that i was missing low Anyway i finished him off a little later than i had wished.

i don't know what i was thinking, i knew i needed to aim a little high, but i didn't. AND THEN IT TOOK ME FIVE SHOTS TO FIGURE IT OUT. oh well, it's a good learning experience. -
I LOVE IT OVER THERE IN THAT AREA. Went to school over there a year ago and did a bunch of hunting, you are very lucky to live in that area, it is beautiful and there are tons of deer. Never found any sheds though

I agree with yah sundevil, if you get back in there off the roads, you'll see some great terain, and yes some good bucks. the terrain is rocky and steep, and i loved hunting it this last october. And i was right up the road from the caverns.

thanks galiuro he was deffinitely a good one, probably somewhere around 25 to 30 lbs. easy. Pretty good coat on him for an az yote. going out tomorrow morning as well and we'll see what i can stir up.

Well after work I had a little time before dark so... of course i went out. Took the 12 yr. old little bro and headed out real quick. First stand was a good one, however the wind was wrong (maybe that makes it a bad stand), anyway nothing came. so we hustled back to the truck and set up on the opposite side of the road that we had just called, and set up on a small ridge. well about ten minutes into some jack rabbit distress on, once again, tony's fantastic cow horn tip i hear some howling behind us, a ways off. Suddenly i catch movement at about 300 yards and see a coyote, and in a flash it's gone. So i move the gun, get set up and BOOM there she is skylined at about 150 yards. So i get her in the scope, and she dips behind the rise, so i take my eye off of the scope and see another, bigger male farther up the ridge, settle the crosshairs on him, lip squeek to stop him, and BOOM...D-R-T. woohoo, his little lady got out in a flash. The setting sun made for some really great pics.

hey first coues, i use #4's but haven't taken a shot yet with the shotgun. The guys on predatormastersforums.com reccomend #4's so, keep me posted though on what you decide on and how well they work

Dude that thing is sick. Don't set it down out there or you'll lose it.

I was just interested, what have you had success with lately, sound wise? I've had some success on jack rabbit distress but that's it, mostly because i haven't got much else in the hand blown call arsenal, so maybe some input with guys with e callers. Are they coming in with bird distress, pup distress, etc.? just wondering what i need to work on.

Average day?Peak of the Rut?
Bryson Bendall replied to 300 ultra mag's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Ahh the rut. Will we ever know. The earliest i've seen the coues rut peak (in my very short life) has been 1st to second week in january but usually more like third to last week in jan. -
That a boy tyler. Great buck. Tons of character, and with as much as you hunt and scout, you deserve a deer like that. Tell your dad hi for me.
-
That is an awesome buck right there. Congratulations, and good job on not getting discouraged with all of the hunters around. Sometimes if you play it right you can use them to your advantage and it looks like you did. WAY TO GO! bryson

HOLY ANTLERS! What a hawg. Congrats. It looks like you did your homework.

What's up guys. I just got back from the 34B hunt, and was blessed to fill my tag. He's not a monster but he sure will taste good. The story goes like this... The dad, my two little brothers (aged 8 and 11) and I headed out for 34B thursday night and set up camp under the moon light. The next morning we started hiking at 4:00 and were set up on the ridge where we wanted to be by about 5:30 (a mother of a hike i might add and my two little bro's hung surprisingly. after seeing a few other hunters and about five or six does my dad and I met back up and began to hike deeper into the canyon. I spotted a good little forky about 800-900 yards out and went after him. Unfortunately he got passed me and over the radio my dad tells me that the buck is about 500 yards from me in a small water tank with a couple does. Well, not a minute later a shot rang out (not from my gun gosh darnit) and that buck expired. Well back into camp we headed and my dad and the bro's headed back home so the eleven year old could get to football practice. So I hunted a different are that night and saw a few does. Oh yeah... and i did see a bomber 90-100 class buck, but failed to get a shot at him before dark (oh....his time will come). I had him at about 330 yards but he was in some ocotillo's and i just couldn't get a shot. I guess that's why they call it hunting. Anyway, i decided to go back to that same area this morning and set up before light on the ridge. After about 3 or 4 does I spotted a nice forky at about 600 yards. so i closed the distance and set up just outside 300 yards. I searched for him but couldn't find him. About that time the canyon was coming alive I had 6-8 deer in the bottom feeding and found another buck. Definitely smaller but....hey you have to take your opportunities when you are given them. That buck bedded down and I told myself that if the big buck didn't show up or the nicer 2 then i would harvest this one when he got up. Well the smaller buck stood up and without any other nicer deer in sight I opted to take the opportunity. I got set up and BOOM. I saw the buck hunch up and walk a little, i took a second shot boom. The deer dissapeared, i figured i had got him so i headed down the hill. upon arriving at the last place i had seen him i spooked him. Well about 200 yards later i finished him off. my dad came out that morning later and was on the top of the mountain where i had originally shot from and called me as i was gutting him. So he was able to share the fun and excitement with me. Here are the pictures. They aren't great and no the deer did not die like that on the rock, i promise. good luck to everyone in the upcoming hunts. And thanks to all (especially amanda) for making this such an awesome web site.

DUDE i know what you mean firstcoues, one and a half more days of work and then it is over. i seriously look at the clock like every ten minutes...patience, patience, AAAAHHHH screw patience i'm about to call in sick. went and shot the gun yesterday and I am ready. One time I archery deer hunted for two days, thinking my tag was in my wallet the whole time when it was actually at my house in my underwear drawer. hmmmm, not cool, thankfully i didn't see a buck worth pursuing either of those days, but yikes! good luck to everyone this weekend, i'll be in 34b with the dad and two little bros (aka. the good luck charms). THUMBS UP ON Mr. Thompkinson! I've used him for the last four or five years with three deer and an elk. And his taxi work is phenomenal. Just got back my bow bull mount from 06 and he looks amazing. I need to get some pics up. He also did my dad's 107 coues so i'll try to get a pic up of that one too. Great prices I might add. don't know if he wants his phone # posted all over the internet so if you are interested pm me. Nicest guy in the world too. Tell him what you need and he'll do it for yah. like Scout'm said, he lives in saint david so about an hour from sv and probably the same from hw. 83/ I 10 area. bryson -
Red Silverado Park Avenue in tucson, didn't catch your name over the roar of our two beastly trucks (or was that just yours). Good talking to you though during that red light! Did you get drawn this year?

I find a lot of my scrapes and rubs in mid to late december to january-february. Mostly along well used game trails and in transition zones (like the trees on the edge of a meadow). Also, it seems like random secluded trees, that are small diameter always get torn up. I notice that when I'm not looking for them and just tromping through the wilderness i miss them. But when i'm taking my time and scanning the area i always find them. I honestly can't compare the amount a coues deer scrapes to the amount an eastern wtl. scrapes because i've never hunted back east, but I've heard they don't do as much scraping. However, from what i've seen, if you get in a well populated coues corridor with several bucks, you will definitely find scrapes and rubs.

That pig hunt'll be fun. And 34A is a great unit. I live out in Vail so I'm in 34A probably fifty percent of the time i am out. Great coues country. my dad and I have the october hunt next week in 34B. We are taken the two little bro's and one of my dad's friends with his son. Hopefully All of my scouting time will pay off. GOTTA LOVE COUES HUNTING! Well good to meet you wade, and good luck this season man. -
what to do
Bryson Bendall replied to bowhunter4life's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
what a flippin toad. compared to a dear my dad shot that scored 107, I'd say this buck will go about that but probably more because he's got a lot more tine length, maybe in the 110 range (and those are conservative guesses because I always seem to get big buck fever when I'm guessing scores and guess to high). Question number two: Well I think you might be worried to let him shoot this buck because you might ruin his concept of hunting. Maybe your thinking that he'll shoot that one for his first deer and probably never have the opportuninty to shoot one like it. BUT, I think it will have the opposite effect. DUDE HE WILL BE HOOKED FOR LIFE! I shot a spike when I was 11, which you can't really compare to the buck that you've got pictures of, but from that hunt on I have been addicted to hunting like obiese people are addicted to choclate. I think if he shoots this one it will even compound that one. Dude give him a shot man, think... if he puts that one down you're gonna be the proudest dad ever. And likewise, if he kills it he'll be addicted to hunting forever, and if he doesn't he'll still be addicted to hunting forever. If he doesn't , you two are still gonna have a blast, and you'll still be the proudest dad ever. And hey, you still have to catch him in the day time, you still have to get close, and he still has to make a lethal shot so honestly your chances of getting a chance at him in january is pretty good. But it's your call man...just my opinion -
Lunar Eclipse tonight

Yeah I saw the end of it as well at 5:00 when i got up to do some hunting. Found a couple of shooter bucks today in 34b. Unfortunately I saw more of their rear ends than their antlers but I could tell that two of them were outside their ears for sure. Also a couple of retarded yotes. couldn't get them within 60 yards. but it was hilarious watching them try to figure out what this weird looking bush was screaming like a rabit at them for.
