This hunt has brought me, my kids and many friends great pleasure and some wonderful memories over the years, but we have pretty much run out of kids. While we wait for the next generation to reach age ten, I would love to pass on info to a deserving youth. I am looking to give information that will help a younger kid kill their first elk. I have a camera that took 2304 pictures of elk in a 16 day stretch. Most pictures are of cows and most are in the daytime. The area will require a .4 mile pack over moderate terrain. There is no vehicle access, even with a quad. If interested, shoot me a PM. I will not give details until the early rifle hunt is over, but I will provide the general area incase you want to make camping plans. All that is asked is you post a story and pics after the hunt.

WHAT RIFLE WILL YOU BE SHOOTING THIS SEASON?
Pine Donkey replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
This post got me thinking...I don't have a gun to use. My .270 Ruger M77 is having issues since my son fell off a ledge with it in his pack several years ago. My last three deer have been taken with his .270 which is a custom rifle he built on a Mauser 98 action. It is a sweet shooting machine, but when he went off to college he took it with him. My wife and daughter have the same hunt as I, so they will be using our Remington 700's in .243 and .308. This leaves me with unproven guns. There is a nostalgic part of me that wants to use a lever action .35 rem that was my dads when he was a kid, but it just does not fit my coues hunting style. I don't feel a .22-250 or .223 will carry enough energy out at the 500 yard range. I hate dragging a heavy .300mag around unless I know I will be shooting 500+. A couple years ago I bought a 25-06. It is a caliber I have always wanted. I put a lower end scope on it, and worked up a load that was over lapping shots at 100 yards. I zeroed it at three hundred and put it in the safe. I guess it is time to pull it out, put a better scope on it, and run some lead through it. -
Cool! You don't see too many 45-70's in the field anymore. Great job.

Larry, that is a great bull. I love the story and all the videos. That high spot you glass from is one of my favorite places. Anytime of year, a couple hours with 15's on a tripod can sure clear your head of the routines of the everyday work world. From that spot I have seen deer, elk, bear, turkey, antelope and tons of small game and predators. I know there are also lions in the area. 6 of the big ten from one spot...quite a place. Thanks for taking the time to do such a nice write up. Made me feel as if I were there. -
Holy crap! That is a "Guess the Score contest" waiting to happen. Great, unique treasure. Congratulations to the hunter.
