When kids start hunting they have an interest in hunting, but they have not yet developed a passion to hunt. The embers of interest need to be stoked into the flames of passion. I do not believe this is done by passing legal bucks in hopes of a trophy. Coues live in some pretty severe country. Dragging a kid all over that terrain and convincing them success is only found on the far end of a tape measure will only lead to discouragement. Let them roll the first buck THEY choose, then celebrate it like no other! This is the approach I took and it worked out pretty well. Good luck and post some pics with your kids behind their kill.

Great buck, and great smile!

Jordan, that is a great buck! You have a great start into the world of hunting. You are fortunate to have such a dedicated dad. Congratulations to both of you.

I lived in Flag for five years back in the 80's and always had great service at Rhonda's. Strips and eggs was my favorite...oh wait, that was Mike and Rhonda's, maybe we are talking about a different place...my bad.

We were skunked! The bulls were thick and the cows scarce. We did see a few cows; my mom missed a couple shots, but they all ended up with the tags in their pockets. We saw almost 10 bulls for each cow...crazy! Also saw a lot of road hunters. Quads and side by sides were everywhere...no meadow was safe. The tag holders on this hunt were my wife and daughter, my mom and a good friend of my parents. Several other friends and family showed up to be part of the hunt. No elk killed in our group, but the time with friends and family is worth more than any tag! Sadly, our daily lives get so hectic that we need an excuse such as this hunt to make time for what is important.

Take that 6x2 out of the gene pool!

Pepper is always a good idea. It may not keep the flys away, but at least you will not be able to tell if they pooped on your meat!

A gun can't be unethical, only the shooter can. A .243 in the hands of someone who knows the gun's limits, and who practices regularly and is competent, is a good gun.
