Carlos grew up in a the house just across the wash from ours. His sisters are the same ages as our daughters so he was kind of a big brother to our girls to. He was the kid that got along with everyone. He loved the outdoors and went on many hunting and fishing trips with our group. He was one of the many we took camping in the White Mountains every year. Both my wife and I taught him in class; her in fifth grade, me in high school. As he entered his Senior year, he knew he wanted to work with UAV's, and went to Cochise College half day to get a jump start on his degree. I did not have much contact with him over the past few years; he was busy with his career and his family moved away, but he always held a special place in our hearts. He will be greatly missed. Thank you Carlos for your service and dedication to our country, and thanks for the memories. We love you. Carlos died last week when the C130 he was flying in went down in Afganistan. He was on his way home from a seven month stint in theater. This was he forth (I think) time working in Afganistan.

Great post. Don't forget about the families of our fallen military members. They to have paid a huge price for our freedom too.

Heck, it wasn't that many years ago we were playing Smear the Queer on the playground. Now schools are outlawing Tag and Red Rover.

Cool video, but what a bunch of crap that narration is. It continually attributes human like emotion and thought to both mother and baby.

There are two types of people that hunt. One type, hunting is what they do, the other type, hunting is who they are. For the first type, there are many good 'justifications'; scientific, emotional and cultural. Many of those have already been listed. For the second type, hunting is who they are. Justifications do not apply. You might as well justify why they are tall or short or brown haired or light skinned or...

Hey! Are those mounts tucked away in a bedroom? I'm calling foul! Set them free out in the living room for all to enjoy. Just kidding. Great looking mounts.

We are headed to Cancun in the first week of June. I was thinking about hiring a charter, but from reading it looks like the slow fishing season. Anyone have any experience around this time of year?

I'm just getting around to watching the Netflix series The Ranch. I really enjoy it, but it's hard to hear with my wife and daughter constant lis saying, 'That is you dad'. They don't know what they are talking about.

The response of elk to calling has certainly evolved over the past few years. Each Labor Day weekend the woods are full of campers blowing calls, then the season starts and the woods are filled with hunters who have bought new calls and a good DVD. The elk have grown increasingly call shy. In general, I only use calls to mimic what the elk are doing naturally. For example, if a heard is filtering through the pines making only an occasional mew, it is not time to break out the hyper hot. If bulls are only offering only a scant response to distant bugles, moving in and challenging them is not the best move. With both my last two Bulls, 2015 and 2013, I located Bulls at a distance with a bugle. I then closed in silently, keeping my ears open to any indication of where the heard was. Once I worked my way into range of feeding cows, I set up and waited for the bull to come and check them. By the time he did, I was relaxed, ready and knew the distances of all shooting lanes. I only blew a call after the shot. It's not how I hunted a decade ago, but it worked out well. Of course, if you hit one of those magical days when the elk are screaming, vocal and active, well just join in the fun! Good luck
