Which sights to put on new shotgun? Factory ones shoot high!
Viper replied to Viper's topic in Turkeys!
Thanks for the replies! I hit a few shops/stores the other night, looking for either the Dead Ringer or Hiviz Triviz (mentioned by Aamon of Little Creek Calls). My search ended at Bass Pro. They had several models of the Hiviz, including the Triviz. I bought that one. Mounting was pretty easy, although it requires some patience with the tiny hardware. The only quality issue I encountered was the double-sided tape was only one-sided. It appears one side was suppose to be stuck to the bottom of the front sight, but was dried up and fallen off. I think my fix is better. After threading the attachment screw into bead hole, I used black RTV silicone where the tape should go. I think that will hold for a long time. The sights seem rock solid and the front optic tube is very bright. I will finish sighting in/patterning this weekend. Oh...I also bought a lead sled. That light weight 500 beat me up last weekend. The first shot wasn't bad, but 2 - 6 killed me. Another thing I did last night...I removed the recoil pad and filled the stock with 3/4 pound of popcorn kernels It was the only thing I could find around the house that had some weight to it and wouldn't make a mess. At least if I get stranded in the woods I can make popcorn -
So, I decided to buy a dedicated turkey gun for this season, without investing too much money. I bought a Mossberg 500 Turkey 12 ga. model with X-full choke, 24" ported barrel, camo'd, and fiber optic sights. I took it out last weekend to pattern it and sight in. It shoots too high at 20 and 30 yards. The rear sight is already adjusted down as far as it will go. There is no adjustment in the front sight. After reading some other forums and reviews, it seems to be a common issue with these factory Mossberg sights. This is a bummer, 'cause I really like the fiber optic sights for my old eyes. So my question is, what are some recommendations for sights? I see Truglo and Hi-viz make several models. I don't really want to spend more than $50 so a red-dot is out of the question for now. I am tempted to just take off the rear sight and use the front fiber optic sight only. Thanks

Great comeback! I wish I could think that quick in those situations. Hunters in general like to be left alone to do there own thing, but we really do need to go on the offensive sometimes. These anti-hunters get away with way too much nonsense.

What is the size of the lot?

Thanks for the input. The Hi-viz mentioned above looks good. I like the rear "ring" concept. I was also looking at this Dead Ringer Beard Buster. It gets good reviews. Sounds like it doesn't have much elevation adjustment though. Any experience with it? https://deadringerhunting.com/product/beard-buster/ -
Did you find those keys in 5B-S, near Clint's Well? I lost a set while riding my quad....maybe 5 years ago.

Now that would be quite a challenge! I was pretty good with one as a kid. Might have to pick it up again.

I just bought a brand new Mossberg 500 Turkey gun with 24" barrel and 3" chamber. I will be patterning it this weekend. I will try the longbeard shells. In prior years, I just taped up my old 870 wingmaster, 2 3/4" chamber, Modified choke. I had some old #2 steel shot shells from several years ago. I got real lucky to take two birds with this setup...one at 40 yards and one at 30 yards. The one at 40 yards only took a few pellets to the head and neck. I decided this year to have a dedicated turkey gun with much better performance. I hope I don't have buyer's remorse

Turkey Hunting and Calling Seminar 4/9 6PM at Mesa Sportsman's
Viper replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Turkeys!
It was some good learning....and I bought a new call It would be nice to meet some fellow CWT members, and I know there were several there, but you don't know who they are. Maybe, at these gatherings someone should ask for a show of hands or something. -
Thats a GREAT buck! Did you tape him?

That's a big cat! Those bucks may not make it to October.

I will be there with a hunting buddy. Hope to meet some of you. -
I had this hunt a couple years ago. Tough hunt! I won't do that again. You will see a lot of elk...until the rut is over. Then, most of the bulls are gone, so early scouting for elk won't matter. Mainly, scout for water and get familiar with the area. The smaller bulls that tend to hang with the cows may still be there, but the larger bulls head up...up into the Mazatzals or north toward the rim. If the weather stays dry into the hunt, water will be the most effective. You will be in competition with the local rancher and other hunters for the water. This has been my experience. There are others on this site that know this hunt better than I. Perhaps they will share info.

Yup...I saw that they added a Nov hunt in 22 (and other units). Jack, I know you have had a voice in this for a while. Thanks for being involved. Time will tell how it works out. It should spread out the hunters a bit...I hope....unless they start increasing tags for each hunt. It will be a tough choice for me now...Oct as usual, or Nov when it might be cooler.

Been going to Without Walls, Assembly of God for a month now. Lindsey and Southern, Mesa. Great music and teaching.

Very nice pics. You caught some good poses. I think the flower is Owl Clover. I too moved here in '79, from Indiana.

Can it be towed safely with a 1/2 ton, or is 3/4 ton advised?

What is the total length of the trailer? What is the length of the ATV deck area? Thanks

I have one of these. I don't use it for archery hunts because it seems pretty noisy.

You sure it's not a scam to get your CC info?.....just throwin' it out there.

I bought a Leupold RX-1000i TBR rangefinder a couple years ago, and within six months the bottom LCD segments of the readout started to fade. I continued to use it because it wasn't that bad. This last hunt season it got worse. I had to cover the lens to see the yardage readout. I contacted Leupold to get return info and the CS guy made the statement that "they would most likely send me a new one free of charge because they want to keep their customers happy". I hung up the phone thinking, yeah right...we'll see. Well, around three weeks after sending it in, I get a brand new RX-1200i TBR! The display is excellent and works great. Thank you Leupold!!!

I have never been out specifically shed hunting in the spring...just keep a sharp eye when I am out for fun and spring turkey. I usually find sheds during fall hunting, which is a real treat. I have never sold a shed. I like them too much to sell. I have a pile that I display in my house. The money is usually what drives the lunacy...makes people go nuts. I prefer not to participate. Years ago I was a member of Sheriff Joe's posse. I presented this idea to a G&F officer once. He didn't like the idea much. It seems it would be a good idea to have a G&F posse program to have more eyes and ears in the outdoors. The officers are spread way too thin. Basically, have a radio to report violations real time, take pictures if possible, and be a good witness. Heck, if we had the program/support of the G&F, I would even buy my own radio. We all witness illegal/unethical behavior, and I would love to be able to do something about it.
