  1. Rem 700 in .270. Love that rifle/caliber. Easy to shoot and easy to carry.
  2. As usual, camofire is tempting me to spend money. Recently the Suunto Traverse Alpha watch was offered on their site for a good price. Every time it pops up, I find myself researching it. Overall, great reviews, with some minor issues. I'm undecided due to I don't typically wear a watch and this type is big and bulky. I am a gadget guy, but am getting a little annoyed by all the technology, especially when it doesn't work properly. I like the idea of having some features while hunting/hiking...gps, compass, barometer, maybe the route tracking. I guess the question is, is it worth the $350 for these "cool" conveniences, or will it be an anoying gadget that lays on the dresser. I would appreciate hearing your experienced oppinions.

    Layering for cold weather

I have invested in the Kuiu stuff and like it. It works for me. I wear bargain merino wool base layers (Core 4 Element). I have the Kuiu zip off wool bottoms if colder (love the zip off concept). My mid-layer is a First Lite hoody and/or the Kuiu Peloton 240 full zip. Outer layer is the Kuiu Superdown or the Kenai jacket. These have tremendous warmth to weight ratio. You don't even know these are in your pack.

    Shed a teer

This thread causes me to reflect on my relationship with my Dad. I was on my annual vacation this week, back in Indiana to visit family. I moved from there to AZ 38 years ago, at age 20. This trip, I visited him in a nursing home. He had a stroke last Nov. He didn't get around well before the stroke, and now he's doing PT to get that back. He's doing better than expected, but will probably never go home again. It's tough to watch the parents age, especially away from home. We were never very close. Seems like every time we did things together we fought. He wasn't a great father, but did what he knew how. His younger brother (my uncle) got us into archery and bow hunting. It was something we could do together. I killed my first deer with a 40# Bear recurve and cedar arrow. He helped me hang it in a tree, then left to "scout another area". He didn't like blood. He didn't stick with hunting. He doesn't seem interested in hearing about my adventures. About 10 years ago he drove here to join me on my archery elk hunt in 5B-S. He was in camp for a few days, then got ticked about something and left while I was out hunting. I came back to camp and he was gone. That still hurts. If you still have a father around, cherish the moments together, especially if he can still join you on hunts. I have some good memories with my Dad...and some not so good. It gave me a clear view of what I wanted to pass on to my kids, and what I didn't want to pass on. Now I have an opportunity to "get it right" with my grandson.

    Backpacking on a budget

Yes, it's a good deal. I have this pad and like it. It inflates with 10 breaths and packs down small. It's not insulated, so mild weather only. I have an Exped Synmat for colder weather, which is too hot for mild nights.

    Backpacking on a budget

REI rents gear for pretty cheap. You can try before you buy. I surf several sites, almost daily to see what's available...Rokslide, camofire, CWT, Archery Talk, Kuiu Gear Only facebook page, craigslist.... Craigslist is a pretty good resource for lightly used basic gear. People buy the stuff, discover they don't like backpacking/camping, and put it up for sale...same for exercise equipment. I agree with previous comments stating, just get out there for overnighters with what you have and start refining. Upgrading is a continual endeavor.
  13. My son just bought this rifle, same caliber. It is sweet!

My first exposure to Timber Mesa was at the Mesa store a couple weeks ago. They put a new string/cables on my Drenalin... (I have an elk hunt this Sept). Great customer service!...and close to home.

    Rangefinders

The early Leupold models sucked. I've had the Leupold RX1200i TBR for a while now and it works great. It has angle compensation. I think you can find those for around $300. I got a good deal on a Leica 2000-B. It is very nice, and accurate. It calculates angle, temp, and barometric pressure into shoot to distance. I got this one because I too am working to extend my shooting range. It cost a little more but you can find deals. For mountain hunting angle comp is important. Shooting 500+ yards, air density starts to be a factor.

    New pool

I did this tonight, while cooking steaks on the smoker. I grew up in the water and love it. My son, daughter-n-law, and 3 yr old grandson are living with us for a while. They swim nearly every day. The grandson is getting better at swimming by the day. It's worth having a pool...for me...for all my family. I don't find the maintenance is that costly, it's the electricity to run the old single speed pump. I need to convert to the multispeed, which costs a lot less to run. I have an old sand filter system that is over 20 years old and works great. I had the sand changed out when I had the pool resurfaced, about 10 years ago. No problems at all. It is the simplest and most maintenence free system...in my opinion.

I started buying WY antelope points a few years ago. I hope I can go before the system changes in the wrong direction.

    Evap Cooler in Garage?

I have one on the outside of my garage, blowing in through a hole in the wall. It's a large roll around type I have fastened to the wall. Pads on two sides. If the outside temp is below 95 I vent it through the house...works great. Otherwise I just run it when I'm working in the garage. I got it from Weather Shack on Main in AJ. They have good prices.
