Dang it ruffcountryDon't.....now you spoiled our joke. Now that you let the cat out of the bag they should all just stay home. Especially during the early November hunt

You are correct RoughCut, cat-claw thats at leased a foot over your head. And a lot of times you don't have any choice but to make your way through it. When you get to the other side you are checking to make sure your clothes are still on...and that includes your boots Oh and don't forget about the ocotillos, prickly pear and cholla. I remember when rounding up cattle in the mountain pastures we would always wear chaps, Levi jacket, and a good hat in the middle of the summer. Nothing like chasing an ole cow and those big thick nasty ocotillo branches just beating on ya. Well I don't know don't where Casey was but if that buck is anywhere in my old stomping grounds he is mine........hopefully
  3. Well I have to agree the Vortex is really good glass for the money. Even the vipers are really good and about half of the Kaibab's. Hammy I will agree the Celestron are not bad. My bro had a pair of 10X50's that he used for many years. For the money I was surprised.

I agree stanly, it sounds to great to be true. I do however agree with Roughcut, and joeybari, this is a very good unit. and a lot of deer. However I will add some of the down falls. First the IA issues, it is a small unit so it can become crowded fast, lots of lions (this is not just a 36c issue). And that unit can kick you butt in a hurry. I have gone 2 for 2 in that unit. But I had to hunt HARD to do it. In short, a great unit (my favorite) but not a sure thing.

  9. Does anyone have one of the new Marlin bold action rifles. I looked at one in Sportsman's the other day and they look like a really well built little gun. Bass Pro is selling them for $279.99 and Cabelas and Sportsman's is selling them for $299.99. If they shoot well I think it might be a great first deer rifle for my kids.
  10. RR, I am with you that each rifle is an individual. My dad and I each have a Ruger M77. Mine is stainless steel and synthetic stock. His is the classic blued and walnut stock. When working up loads after we bought them his consistently gets 100fps less than mine. I will give those powders a try. The load I am currently using is 150gr Sierra SP BT, 54.5 grains of AA4350, CCI250 primers, and Remington cases. I am getting 3050fps and great accuracy. But I would like to try the Hornady SST because of the higher BC. Thanks for the reply RR.
  11. I am getting ready to do some test loads for my .280 with the 154gr Hornady SST. I was wondering if anyone has one that is working well for them. I am looking to get around the 3000fps mark. I will be shooting my Ruger M77 Mark II. Just looking to save a little time if you know what I mean. Thanks, DD
  12. Well, I'm not commuting everyday from Flagtown , so I will be camped there somewhere at the base of the Babos. I hear Scottyboy is bringing elk backstrap to the party. I was surprised to see so many leftovers in 34A. That was my second choice for LO. Doug~RR Hey Doug any idea on exactly were your gonna camp?
  13. Wow it looks like its going to be a CWT party in 36C Nov 6th. I drew this tag as well. So lets see there will be Casey, RR, Scotty, NRS, and myself down there that we know about. At leased i know there will be some good people down there. Happy hunting maybe we will see you all there.

Rifle / caliber choice for youth elk

My point exactly, IF YOU HIT IT IN THE RIGHT SPOT. If you don't hit it in the right spot I would much rather have the heavier bullet. Now I am not talking about a gut shot or something like that I am talking about if you miss the vitals by a few inches. In that case give me the larger slug every time.

    I'd like to start a debate.....about points....

Yup, that is a 3 point or 3x3. Don't ask why thats just how it is I guess. Who cares how the eastern hunters count there deer any way???

great point Casey, long range shooting will always be more about practice and knowing your equipment rather than just having it.

    AZGFD Double Standard

I think this may be an isolated issue. I have heard of G&F officers contacting ranchers that they work with on a regular basis to ask them if they can dispose of troubled bears that they had to take out. They contact them to dump the remains on private property, that way the only people that will see it is the ranchers and the G&F officer that had to take the bear. If they cant use the carcass in any way I feel this is a good alternative. No chance of hikers or tree huggers happening across the animal. I feel our game department does a good job only taking animals that are a true threat to humans. I do think the choice to dispose of this bear was in this location was a bad one. Like all have said we have to be very careful and respectful of how we handle these very difficult situations. It could be a PR nightmare for the AZGFD and hunters alike if this were to get out to the general public and media.

Rifle / caliber choice for youth elk

Okay even though I agree that the 25-06, .257 Roberts (have one myself), .243 and all the other lighter calibers being mentioned WILL work just fine, I have to say go the .270. Any time you can shoot a bigger slug at the same speed as a smaller one at a LARGE animal you will always be in better place. You have to remember he is a kid and not an experienced hunter yet. He does not yet fully understand shot placement, angles, and all the factors that come into play when taking a shot. To me it is always a little extra risk when using a lighter bullet. Speed is not everything. What will happen when that 100 or 115 grain bullet hits that thick furred, heavy skinned, hard mussel elk. Will it retain enough weight and energy to get the job done if the shot is 6 inches off. To me especially with youth I always err on the side of the bigger bullet. Its just a little extra insurance in a hunt of this young mans life.
  19. It has been 56 years sense Mr. Stockwell has taken the current world record. Year in year out many great bucks have been taken, but none that will over take his monster. So my question is will we ever see a new world record. I will not even get into the discussion of "has one already been taken hat is just sitting in some one barn or hanging on a wall and not scored" that is just a different post altogether. So my vote is we will probably see one but maybe not in my life time, and I am only 32.

    New Scope

??? Well, my Leupold was not a high end Leupold (VX II 3 x 9), I really like the quality of the Bushnell and there are some very good reviews on it. To get a similar scope in Leuplod, one would have to spend at least double the $$. My Leupold is going on my muzzleloader... Hopefully I will not even need to use my new scope since I will hope to arrow a buck in August Redman Ya I have heard some good things on the very high end Bushnell's. I saved up for 2 years till I could afford my Leupold. I was right out of high school so it took a little while. I ended up with the VXIII 4.5 X 14 X 50mm AO. I have been extremely happy with that scope. How is the warranty on the Bushnell, and Nikon. Also to get back to the original post I don't have any experience with that particular scope but I have a few friends that love the Nikon's. You should be very happy.

    Will we ever see it?

Sorry to be the one to bring the thread here, but I am part of a pretty sizeable percentage of Coues hunters that believe the top 2 nontypical Coues deer are actually not Coues deer at all. Okay this is my thread so I can hijack it if I want one more question, do you and the other hunters think they are muleys or eastern WT. Sorry for the questions I just want to make sure I have all the facts before I comment.
