maybe 5 o clock their closing time....... "Draw results are unavailable at this time" I would call the Game and Fish a really bad name right now if I was not afraid of not being drawn for anything for the rest of my natural life

How, where to go when G&F err on your applications?
desertdog replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I was thinking the same thing. That thing looks like it can drop dead at any time. I am surprised his rack was as big as it was for being so malnourished. -
Okay I just got my scope back from Leupold this afternoon so the results will come out tomorrow................. I hope

Sorry for the stupid question but have the results ever come out on a weekend. In all my years of applying this is the first year that I have followed it this close. My cousin has always called me and told me when they were out. Now he has moved to Utah and I am on my own. This bites!!

A Little Help To Pass The Time
desertdog replied to RoughCut's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Wow all I can say is wow Thanks for posting for thoes 3 and a half min. I did not think of the draw at all. -
This is the reason my dad never put me through the course. With his job he was out of town a lot and te classes were so hard to come by. So I just hunted by his side until I was old enough to turn in with him. This is a huge problem for the youth in this part of the state and a lot of times it kills their excitement. My oldest is 9 and I will be looking to get her signed up within the next year and I also want to take the class with her. I am already not looking forward to the frustration of getting us signed up because the powers that be cant get their act together. The thing that really makes me mad is for a child to hunt they have to take this course. But they make it very difficult to get your kids though the course. How many more handcuffs do we need on our youth.

Thats one heck of a buck RoughCut, looks like one of those big unit 33 bucks Wouldn't have been able to do it without a little help from you DesertDog No way man. It was all you. You put the time in, found him, walked you butt off and made the shot. Heck I was not even there. I deserve no credit for your great buck. I am just glad it all came together for you seeing you did not have a lot of time to hunt. Hard work pays off. -

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has been to Roosevelt in the last few weeks, and if so how the fish were biting. I will be going the weekend of the 20th and the 21st with the family and was hoping to get the kids in some blue gill of catfish action. Any reports?

Suggestions for a new rifle scope
desertdog replied to Rio's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
+1 on this suggestion. The only thing I would say is I have the Leupold VX3 4.5x14x50, and the extra height of the 50 does not bother me at all. The scope rings are more expensive as you stated RR. The 40mm will be plenty how ever I don't regret my decision to go with the 50 one bit. One a separate not I don't think you can go wrong with a Leupold. I know the Zeiss and Sworos have gotten a lot of credit and hype as well they should. But the question I ask myself is do I really need to pay much more for a little extra quality. I say the difference is not that great and I prefer to keep my business American when ever possible. -
Thanks for the updates guys. I really appreciate it.

Are the Southern Units Really That Dangerous?
desertdog replied to AZMThunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
This is a great question, and one that I don't think can be answered easily. My first reaction would be to say yes it is or can be dangerous. Now with that being said I have hunted 36A, 36C, 29, and 30B exclusively for the past 20 years. everything form dove and quail to deer and coyote calling. I have never had one incident with illegals or drug runners, and I have seen both. Now in that time I have seen countless gropes of both illegals and runners but they have always gone the other way once they saw me. Now I am sure I have been very lucky that during that time nothing has gotten out of hand. I guess were I come down on the situation is with that amount of activity in the southern units you cant count out the possibility of something bad happening. The fact is you just never know what their intentions may be. If they are desperate they could do anything. And with you starting to take your child it is something to think about. I have taken my daughter and son dove, quail, and coyote calling with me in those areas every sense they were 4 and I have felt safe. I can say there is so much Border Patrol activity especially in 36C that at times it makes it hard to hunt. It comes down to what you are comfortable with and what you are willing to put up with. There is some great hunting, and some beautiful country down south but I would say it could be a risk. -
I have never heard of Eastern in AZ as-well. I have heard of muleys with racks that look just like whitetail racks. Mule deer body just with a whitetail rack. I know they have some eastern whitetail around New Mexico.

To hunt, or not to hunt in Mexico
desertdog replied to swcouesfanatic's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
I could not agree more!!!!!!!!! For my money I will stay right here in the states. There are quality bucks right here at home. Like you said there is more competition for them but is that a bad thing? The question you have to ask yourself is, is it worth taking a chance with all the crooked government, drugs, law enforcement in Mexico. I know there are some really good outfitters that offer top quality hunts and service in Mexico. My worries are not with these good people. My concerns are with the other factors that can arise. Many people have gone and have had no problem. But for me its not worth the risk. There are great bucks right here in Arizona, and with a little hard work you can put yourself in a good situation, with a lot less worry and not as much money. -
Thinking of applying for coues. Deadline approaching. HELP!
desertdog replied to 308Nut's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
As crazy as this may sound I totally agree. I know you have been turning in for these hunts for years but don't give up now. I know you are a NR and that complicates that whole situation but stay the course man. There is nothing like hunting Coues on a December hunt in your favorite unit. However with that many bonus points it would be crazy to turn away a chance at a GIANT strip buck. I mean come on there is big and then there is is BIG!!!!!! Now I know size is not everything, and coues is really a challenge. I would also agree that hunting and then taking the little rascal is one of the most rewording things one can do in deer hunting..........period!!!!!! Now with that being said, anyone that says hunting a true monster Mule deer is not a challenge, or that they are a stupid deer, then I will show you a stupid or misinformed hunter. AKA a coues snob. Bottom line it comes down to personal preference. If all you care about is coues, coues, coues, then turn in for one of the many great coues units, and only December hunts. There is nothing wrong with that and I would be tempted to do just that myself. However if you truly want a once in a 20 to 40 year if that tag, then turn in for the strip, challenge yourself to shoot a 30 inch wide or bigger buck with wicked mass and put something on your wall that will make the people that don't know anything about deer go "HOLY CRAP THAT IS THE BIGGEST DEER I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE". Its a hard choice for some, but not for me. Its strip all the way. But truth be told I grew up a deer hunter, not just a coues hunter. Maybe that is were I come from. Bottom line your going to have a great hunt no matter what you do. Hope you enjoy. DD -
I agree, I don't have a problem with a sign but you have to be detailed. If you just post it and expect people to stay out of the whole area then your fooling yourself. If I want to hunt an area past a water hole and I know that there is someone at the waterhole then I will find a way around his spot that wont disturb him. But its foolish to think that people will or should abandon a wide spread area just because a hunter is sitting on water. Above all else I think we should use common sense and common courtesy when hunting. In short respect each other and not push your way in or think you can reserve a spot for days on end.
