Quick question for you reloaders out there; what all do you do to brand new brass before you load it for the first time?? Full resize makes sence to me, but would this decrease the number of reloads you will get by one? Could you/ should you just neck size?? I plan on deburring the flash hole, cleaning up the primer pocket and all that. Let me know. whitey

lionhunter replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Just finished em up. I went ahead and did everything... Full length resize, trimmed, and cleaned up everything. going to load up some 130 gr. accubonds, and see how they shoot. If they can match the 300 wsm I might try it on coues this year.... Whitey -

New Mexico Speed Goat (short story update)
lionhunter posted a topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Just got back from a New Mexico antelope hunt. Wanted to post some pics. I will follow up with a story later. All I can say for now is we killed two, made some good friends, and one of us (not me) ended up in the hospital for an emergency surgery. (little slip of the knife) Whitey Here is a picture of mine..... Thanks for all the + feedback and pm's The story behind the hunt goes a bit like this: We arrived in springer New Mexico around 1:30 am. After finding a place to rack up for a couple hours, myself and my long term friend Brandon Frost attempted to grab a power nap.... We were up at 4 a.m., and as planned met up with the ranch forman of the ranch we were hunting at 4:30. I was under the impression that antelope hunting consisted of driving around in the truck until a good buck was spotted, put a little stock on it and let it eat. I can say I was pleasantly surprised when we parked the truck, and walked in while it was still dark. ("felt like a coues deer hunt, kind of") We were glassing from a short mesa as the sun came up. We looked at 30+ goats within the first 20 min. One was a good buck (80-82 inches) However, he was on the wrong side of the fence. Bandon wanted to watch him in hopes that he would jump the fence, and come to water on our ranch. I decided to walk about a mile across the mesa and glass off the north end. I looked at appox 25 bucks, and countless does within 30-40 min. I was all set to put the stock on a pretty good buck when the ranchhand (Manuel) said in broken English< " Blanc, wat bout these won?. I looked over at he buck he saw, nd said something that I should not repeat in this story, but basically said let's go. We ran across the valley, dropped into a drainage and up a short mesa. After topping out of the first mesa, we stopped and caught our breath. I told Manuel to stay there, and I crawled up to the top of the second mesa. I stretched my neck as far as I could, and there he was bedded 100- 140 yards away......... I did not want to be that close, but what do you do? Well what you do is get busted by two smaller bucks that I did not even see. They took off to he south. I backed out away from the good buck, and crawled around the mesa I was on towards the little bucks. I set my 300 win mag up on the bipod, (I know not quite enough gun for an antelope, but it is all I could afford), leveled it out with a rock, and here came the big buck. I did not have enough time to range the shot, but I knew it was aroung 200 yards. (It was 223 by range finder) One well placed shot and he was down taking a dirt nap........ (skip ahead 10 min) As we were taking pictures and high fiving we spotted another buck. My hunting parter Brandon went over and shot that buck at around 200 yards (off hand) with his 257 weatherby mag. While gutting the goat Brandon cut his hand to the bone, severing two tendons in his hand........ I would like to say this is when the fun began, but it was not. I got stuck taking care of both antelope, and Brandon drove himself to the hospital for a surgery on his hand. All and all a great trip for both of us..... I think..... Good hunting ... Whitey -
Bullets in the mag getting deformed???
lionhunter posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Myself and my good friend Dave are both having the same issue. Here is the deal: bullets in the magazine are getting deformed when the bullet in the pipe is shot. I shoot a 300 win mag, and he shoots the 300 wsm. We both load the Nosler Accubond bullet. After the first shot the bullets in the box mag are getting flattened on the tip, and he thinks his are getting seated deeper in the case....... What do you think. Is this going to effect shot 2 and 3? How do you fix it. (other than loading one shot at a time) Anyone else had this same problem??? I have never noticed this before because I load one at a time at the range. Any input would be appreciated..... Whitey -

Anyone use a barrel donut/deresonator?
lionhunter replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I put one on my 300 win mag for one day. I shot 4-5 different loads and saw no difference in the groups it shot. The gun is heavy enough already. (11 pounds) so I gave the thingt away. Whitey -

Ok, here is my thought. Many of us shoot/ reload for 30 cal rifles from 308, o6, 300 mags, on up to 30-378. Most shoot 150 gr., 165, or 180 gr. bullets. (I shoot 150 in a 300wsm, and 180 in the win mag, accubonds in both) My question is "WHY DON'T WE SEE ANYONE SHOOTING 125 GR? I looked up the ballistics in the nosler manual, and the 125 shoot 1inch flatter at 300, 3 inches flatter at 400, 6 flatter at 500, and 9 inches flatter at 600. I understand about KE, and B/C and yes it is better in the heavier bullets. I think for coues deer/ antelope the 125 is enough energy. Why don't we hear more people shooting them????????? Give me some insigh... Whitey

I hunt it every year for no less than 20 days. I see drug runners every year, I see illegals everyday, and have had my truck, and trailer messed with more than I care to mention. That being said, all the good Wt spots are foot access only. Hike in 3-4 miles to any of the Good spots. Quite a few deer? Yes, Really good bucks? Maybe . Lion yes. It is definately not an easy unit!!!!! Good luck to all. Whitey

125 gr. 30 cal. question
lionhunter replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I shot my new 270 short mag today with 130 gr silver tip...... Needless to say I don't think I will ever need to mess with a lighter 30 cal. This thing shot gooooooood.3/4 inch 3 shot groups at 200 yard. That is with a trigger that needs some fine tuning, and I am not that good. Like I said earlier, I am very pleased with the 150 and 180 gr. 30 cal that I now shoot, I was just currious. Whitey- -
125 gr. 30 cal. question
lionhunter replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Thanks Red Rabbit, I was hoping you would reply. As a matter of fact, I was going to pm this question to you directly, but figured I would put it out there to all. I agree with everything you said about wind drift, and the bullet drop. The drop is easier to calculate, and with the scopes available today a "flat shooting "rifle, in some regards, is less important than in the past. It just confuses me that more people don't talk about the 125 gr for coues deer out of the 30 cal. Many people rant and rave about the 25. cal so and so shooting a 110 gr or 115 gr. so fast and flat, and how it it the perfect Anelope, and coues medicine. Or the 6 mm, 6.5, or even 270 cal bullets that shoot between a 100- 130 gr. bullet at approximately the speed you can get a 125 gr. 30 cal. to do. I am very happy with the results I am getting out of my loads, (150 and 180 accubonds) but I think I am going to load up some 125 and see what I can get them to do. Anyone that has messed with the 125.gr 30 cal feel free to chime in Thanks Whitey -
I have a bushnell yardage pro 450 in the camo color. I will let you have it with two cases for a hundred bucks picked up. I live in Peoria.. bushnell says it will work on "non reflective surfaces to 450, and reflective out to 999 yards. The furthest I have had it read is 770. (Bear hunting last weekend) Let me know. I have a wild hair to try a .257 weatherby mag or 25-06. I would like to trade the following rifle: Remington Mod. 700 BDL in 6MM Rem. The rifle has a custom trigger set at just under 3 pound, breaks clean and crisp/ no creep. I had the action fiberglass bedded and the barrel floated. (All work was professionally done by Weapons Works) The rifle would come with Leupold one piece base, and rings. (NO SCOPE) I would let this rifle go with the following handloaded ammo: 45 rounds of 80 gr. Nos part, 50 rounds of 95 gr Hornady SST and one box of Federal Premium 100 gr. Nos Part. The ammo alone would cost you a couple hundred bucks. I also have 40-50 pieces of brass. Ok I would consider trades on a .257 Weatherby mag or 25-06 of simular value, and simular condition. This is a very light weight rifle, that has very little recoil; perfect for a kid, women, and a recoil sentitive shooter. Very flat shooting rig....... If no trades come around I would probably sell everything listed for $600 bucks Thanks, Whitey
