    unit 8

I am taking my kids up Wed- Fri to scout for the turkey hunt; I will let you know if it is open. I am sure it would be. I have driven that up from the bottem many times over the years and have never seen it "closed". The snow can get deep, but like I said I have never seen it closed. Whitey 354 is open all the way. Good luck

    Couple lions

How about a story to go with the pics??? As far as "A lion" changing the number of deer you see in any given area, I totallty disagree. There is "A lion" in every inch of good Coues deer country in the state. The lions have always been there, and the deer numbers stay pretty consistant year to year. I would say look for another reason that you are not finding the number of deer. I have watched lions chase deer on more than one occasion, and 2 min. after the lion walked off the deer went back to feeding. Leave the country because there is a lion around.....nope. At any rate, give us a quick story on the lion hunt. Same day? The race? Background on the hounds?? Whitey

    270 wsm and H4350 question

I shoot/ load 130 accubond in front of IMR 4350 64 gr. I have had no problems from summer shooting to winter shooting in Az. I consistantly get 3340-3350. I know that ImR 4350 and H4350 have about the same burn rate. I think if you started around 62 gr. and worked up you would be fine, but you do what you want with this info...... Whitey

    Garmin Rino

I have a rino 520 and 530 that I bought off this sight used. At first I was very disapointed to say the least. After sending them back to Garmin 4 times I am now very satisfied with the way they work.... To answer your question, I use mine with motorola radios and they work just fine transmitting and receiving.. No problems. Whitey

Glassed up another lion in 36 -c

Sorry no time for a picture.... If there had been I would have shot the thing. I, or someone in my hunting party, have glassed up a lion on every trip into 36-c for the last couple of years.. Someone please go in sack a dozen of so up..... I glassed this lion in the southen end of the unit at 9:30 am. He (I think) came to water at 9:30 drank two sips and was gone, back into the thick. I have personally seen 7-8 lion down there in the last 4-5 years. I no-longer have hounds, but someone that does needs to go muck some out....... Whitey

Glassed up another lion in 36 -c

One more lion!!!! Was back in the same area on my son's late Nov deer hunt, and glassed up another lion about 5 miles from the last one. The lion was in a great spot to get on him, and try to kill it but we glassed 4 bucks at the same time..... So the lion got to walk... However, my son got his first buck at 10 years old!!!! Whitey
  22. Contrary to the topic of this post, this post has nothing to do with what or how a bullet performs when it makes contact with an animal. It has everything to do with how a bullet can impact a young "hunter". The story goes something like this: My son Hunter had a pig tag down south about a month ago. In 4 days we were on pigs 3 times. The first two times a shot never panned out. The 3rd time worked out just right, but Hunter missed his shot at 125 yards off the shooting sticks. (The day before he smoked a coyote at 119) He was absolutely bummed out about the missed shot. The Friday after his hunt we went out and checked his .243 to make sure the gun was not the culprit. 200 yards it was dead on. While we were out there he asked if he could shoot my .270 WSM. I told him that he wanted nothing to do with the recoil, and the only thing left to shoot was a milk jug filled with water at 320 yards. He begged to shoot it so I let him. He blew the jug up. Remember this kid just turned 10. He was hooked. "Dad this is the gun I want to use on my Deer hunt in November".... Fast forward to this past Friday, Nov 26. Day one we glassed up many deer, two of which being spikes, and o yes a herd of 20 or so pigs that teased him at less than 200 yards for over an hour.. He decided that he did not want to shoot a spike on the first day. Yes, he hears too many of my friends talking about "holding out" for a good buck. Day two we glassed another Mt. lion within the 1st 20 min of sunlight. That is the second lion I have seen in as many hunting trips in the last month. While looking at the lion, my buddy called on the radio to tell me that had glassed 4 bucks just over the hill from us. The four bucks were 590 yards out. Too far for an ethical shot from a 10 year old. Hunter and I took off up the ridge to get a closer shot. After about an hour of glassing we finally found the deer. 320 yards out. All four bucks were still together, but in a difficult spot; in and out of the thick stuff. Finally the largest of the bucks presented a shot. I told hunter to use the second crosshair and let it eat. Boom, he shot high! The deer bolted about 100 yards and calmed down. My radio was going crazy.... "Get up the hill they are still up there". We hustled up the hill as quickly as we could, topped out and found the bucks at 150 yards in the ocatillos (sp ??). Hunter settled in behind the rifle, and got it done with the .270 WSM... He went crazy, " Dad I got him, I got him........ I could not be more proud of him. He learned that hard work, and persistence pay off, he learned to quarter a deer, and of course, how to pack it out. And he did it all without complaint.... Thanks for reading, Whitey

    bird dog problem

I too know nothing of bird-dogs, but had hounds for 22 years. I always shot a 22 bank starters pistol when feeding pups, and never had a gun shy dog that I raised from a pup. I did aquire some older made dogs that were gun shy when I got them and was NEVER able to get them over it as an adult????? Good luck Whitey
  24. As per our conversation I will take them for my son. Thanks, Whitey
