In the past month ballistic calculations have been a huge topic of conversation between my hunting buddies and myself!!! I have worked up several different loads, researched many different bullet options, set up a mark 4 8.5x25 on my go to rifle and advised a friend on setting up his rifle for a sheep hunt... At any rate, we noticed that different ballistic comp programs would spit out different wind and and drop data when given the same inputs. After hours of research and problem solving it comes down to barametric pressure and bc being calculated in different ways... Word to the wise for those of you calculating your drops..... Be posssitive about how your bullet manufacture calculates the bc on your bullet ( g1 or g7), be sure that the program you use it set to the same bc, and make sure that the barametric pressure is measured in the same way from where you are abstaining your info and the program you enter it into! It will make a difference! That being said....... I am 90% sure that nosler lists their bc in g7 measurements, but I want to be sure. Can anyone verify this??? Thanks Whitey

I could use 100 , but would settle for whatever you might have . Just checked on Saturday.... Sportsmans had 180 and 165, but no 150 ab Thanks Whitey

With that said, if I were starting over I think I would try 140 accubonds! Good luck Whitey

what windshield do you run on your polaris ranger
lionhunter replied to Bucks N Bulls's topic in The Campfire
I have tried them all and did not like any of them. I have a canvas top and no windshield and love it. Get wet when it rains and if it is cold I layer up and slow down. -

Hunter's hunt started on wed afternoon with some scouting. In 40 mph winds we did not see a deer..... Thursday morning we were out in the rain before sun light. We did not see a deer one... The rain stopped around 11 and the deer were everywhere... Hunter said he wanted a coues deer and would not shoot a mule deer even though his tag was for any antlered deer. We found this buck Thursday night we glassed up a monster bear, so I went after it... Along the way, my 300 wsm got banged up pretty baddly. I got 622 from the bear but no shot; it got dark. After a pretty scetchy climb out of a bad spot I finally returned to the ranger around 9:00 Friday morning we hiked into our glassing spot in the dark. After glassing several small bucks and a ton of does my buddy Jay said the magic words, I have two good bucks". The deer were over two miles away. After a good hike we were sitting 540 yards from a 110 and a 90 inch buck. My son hunter laid down behind the 300 wsm And I dialed it up for 550. Jay kept saying what a huge buck it was, and I gave him the shut up look! First shot... Hits high! I was sure itwas hunt and not the gun. Second shot hits just over the deers back! The big buck walks up the hill slowly and beds. The second buck beds next to him. We regroup and reload. The bucks are now at 578 yards bedded. We have a quick chat about the first shots... Hunter says, " dad i was rock solid! Your gun is off. I said, " impossible"! We take one more shot and yep you guessed it, just high. The 110 5x4 buck walks off into a thick. To my surprise the 90 inch just stayed bedded. After more discussion about trying to find the big buck later hunter decided to shoot the smaller buck. At 578 I dialed my gun for 500 due to all the high shots. Wack.. Done deal. We did not get the 110, but what a great memory! We hiked the dear out and checked the gps. 4.9 miles. I would say he earned it. I want to thank Jay wyatt for all his help. I would never tell him, but he is a glassing machine! I shot the gun at a target today and it was 5 inches high at 200 yards! Mad is an understatement.... O well. Good times had by all. Good times, good memories!

Good question? I have three boys so I have wrestled with this very thing. I agree that it should be up to the kid, but let's face it their opinion is often a reflection of ours. My 13 year old gets caught up in the 100 inch or nothing conversations that some of my buddies have..... At any rate, we have always gone with get one under your belt first, and then leave it up to the kid. This last hunting season my son (13) started the hunt saying 100 inch or nothing... After missing a 110 plus on opening day he chose to shoot a 91 inch buck. At the end of the day he was pleased with his deer!! We were able to get my best friends son a 102 a couple of years ago 20 min into his first day ever coues hunting. Now he thinks it's easy.. Final comment.... Leave it up to the kid

I have decided to sell my Vortex Viper HS Long Range 4-16x50 scope. It has the "dead hold BDC" reticle. (Similar to the b& c that Leupold has) it also has 1/2 min of angle elevation target turrets, it can get you to 1000 with one revolution. It has been on one hunt, and is like new! I took a close up of the only scuff it has on the side ao adjustment knob. Other than that it is perfect. Glass is as new, I also have a custom target turret from Kenton built for: 30 cal. 150 accubond At 3275 fps Out to a thousand yards Msrp= 699 I have found them for = 599 I will take $500 ftf picked up. No shipping Pm any questions As all vortex scopes do, this scope has a life time full replacement warranty to whomever owns it! Thanks, Whitey

Scope is spoken for! Thanks Whitey

The story begins with my son's grandfather donating his cow elk tag to him. Grades have always been an " issue" with Ethan, so I made him earn all A's and B's the earn the hunt. Worked like a charm.. The first day we hike and glassed for hours. We got after one herd of about 12 head, but the bull just kept pushing the herd. No shot. Around lunch time E was talking about going to camp for lunch, but I wanted to try one more thing before we ate. We drove the ranger to a steep mountain where I knew from the archery hunt that elk bed during the day. We walked up to the beds and sure enough we jumped 6 more cows.. No shot; it takes a 12 year-old some time to set up! That evening we called in a bull to 80 yards, but he had no cows. Saturday morning we glassed up a herd about a mile away.... The chase was on. We hiked in and set up cross canyon from the elk, but never got a shot before they bedded in a thick. Ethan wanted to walk them up, but we decided to back out and try later. At this point Ethan was pretty wiped out. (13 miles toal). We decided to make " a lil loop" then sit a water hole. Ethan pointed out " Dad, your lil loops always end up big loops! Sorry kid! We found zero elk Sat. Afternoon. Sunday morning found Ethan completely wiped out. We had hiked a total of 13.9 miles combined in the last two days, and he was shot. Needless to say it took some prodding to get him out of the rack at 5 a.m. A short 1.5 mile walk in in the dark and it was all worth it... A perfectly placed shot with to .270 wsm at 150 yards and he had harvested his first big game Animal! It was starting to be a competition in our family because his brother has killed two good coues deer... So I am extra glad that he could get it done.. I think the smile says it all Whitey

Never mind on the rib role question! Did not look closely enough at the last pic! Well done on the follow up. Too many hunters would have chalked it up to a miss and continued hunting.
-
Great write up, and congrats to your wife... Two questions: What's up with the pajamas? And Why didn't you take the rib meat? There is a lot of good grind on those ribs.

I have no clue why the pics came out side ways???? The mt. Was not that steep,,,,,!

Man this rings true!!! Two years ago my son had a turkey tag, and some pretty poor grades. I set my limits, and as most kids he pushed them. He scrambled to get his grades up and at the last minute he was close...... Waiting for a teacher to grade his paper, I caved in and said he could go with the thought that he had done his part... I was wrong; the paper did not bring the grade up.. He won! Last year he had a 19a rifle tag. Once again I set expectations including no letting the grade slip and scrammbling at the last minute to bring it up. This time he did not go hunting! It killed him!!!! As we had glassed over a hundred deer in one day while scouting. I made hime call " hunt of a lifetime" and donate his tag. Lesson learned. This year his grandpa drew a cow elk tag. Since day one of scool I have reminded him that "B" or better or you don't go. I also said if grades drop bellow a B deals are off; no scambling to bring it up!! He has finaaly learned his lesson..... He gets to go kill an elk. It killed me and him to mis the hunt last year, but I truely think it taught him a very valuable lesson.... Good luck on this one....

I just typed up an entire page on this topic and my new computer flashed, and it all went away.. sooooo, I am going to make this short I worked up a load for my buddy's 300 wsm using win brass. we were getting average fps of 3300 ish and 1/4 in groups at 200 with more than one load. we were please.... He could not find any win brass so against my advice he bought fed brass. He said " how much difference could the brass make" well, we shot the same reload recipe using the fed brass and were getting 3500 fps and major pressure issues (flat primers, sticky bolt, etc) still getting good groups, but way too fast. we reverse engineered the cartriges when we got home thinking we had used too much powder.. nope same amount of powder. what we did learn was the fed brass weighed 7 gr more than the win brass. Have any of you experienced such a difference in speed when the only difference was the brass? Please feel free to chime in.. I have always found a good load and stuck with the exact same components, so I have not dealt with this before.... Thanks, Whitey

Here it is guys, the best free dog anyone could ever ask for........ Sadie is 5 years old, is house broken, great with kids, never needs a leash or to be tied up in camp. She will retrieve anything you throw, but has not been hunted. I live in Peoria if you want to come check her out. Pm me with any questions. Thanks, Whitey

My mother inlaw has agreed to take sadie for us... That way the kids get to see her... Thanks for all the questions. Whitey

She is perfectly healthy! I have decided to give her up because she has snapped at the wife's lil dog and since then she has been an outside dog full time.
