Does anyone with 10-11pts want to put in together?
yotebuster replied to trphyhntr's topic in Elk Hunting
Anybody know how I can get a fake social security number. Hired a bunch of illegals at Home Depot to put in for elk over the 10 years or so and they don't have any ID? -

Returning tag for reinstatement of bonus points

Anybody wanna sell me some points?!? 😕 -
I have a love hate relationship with Huntin fool so I got a go hunt membership last year to see if it would work instead. I really missed having an actual magazine with narratives and updates etc. I have learned a lot through reading Huntin fool over the past decade, a lot of it you can take with a grain of salt because I do truly believe they purposely push applicants away from units they prefer, but in general I really like it for states that I know little about. The gohunt membership has been essentially worthless. I dislike they way they lay everything out. If I'm after straight draw odds I look to hunterstrailhead, it's cheap and by far the best layout for straight draw odds. If I want unit over views in a state that I don't know anything about then I use Huntin fool or eastmans. The gohunt membership includes some access to landowner tags if that's your thing, but for the money I don't think its worth it unless you're planning on buying them every year. They also have lots of chest thump stories from bros in flattys if you like that kinda stuff.

My buddy has one that's a few years old. Overpriced for the Deere name. It's got a Kawasaki engine in it that is cold blooded as heck. I would look elsewhere but maybe the new ones are better?

It was -23 last night. I just looked out the picture window in my bedroom and there's a 140" whitetail laying in the moonlight in my soybean patch 80 yards from the house. It's cold up here but I love it! See if you can spot him. Hint, his back is covered in snow and he's by that post.

I think most of the antelope in that unit were transplants to start a new herd? I could be wrong. Makes me wonder how long genetics can carry quality. The antelope up here in ND are huge bodied and stand around in alfalfa and field peas up to their ribs all spring summer and fall yet seldom get over 70-75". Wonder if that same buck would be huge up here too? Maybe the forage is to much of a good thing here. The winter would prob kill them before you could find out.

i bet. but one that ended up being tied for the world record got killed off the strip Didn't they transplant that buck from 19a the year before?
-
Ditto. I would consider a muzzy tag in there if I were you. Won't be anything worthy of that many points left by rifle season.

Let's keep that as the story no antelope in 19a anyhow. Except on the Perkins and it's closed for family issues

I was reading cactusjacks post on his bushnell pistol scope and it got me thinking. I didn't want to hi jack his thread so I thought I'd start another. I definitely am impressed by the idea of vortex warranty or any no fault warranty for that matter, I have a few of their products and have used many more of them. My only beef with their warranty is that I feel like its at the expense of quality. When I was in college I worked for a sporting goods store in ND called scheels. It's the largest sporting goods store in the Midwest and growing extremely fast. They have an extremely good business plan and have put sportsmans and gander mountain out of business in most of the areas they are in. They have scheels branded stuff just like cabelas etc. Any scheels product has a no fault warranty on it like vortex. I was talking with the upper management that are in on the development of that stuff about how they can afford to do it. He said essentially you upsale a lower quality product to the same cost as a higher quality product. For instance. Our best scheels spinning rod was $199. It had a no questions asked warranty. I bought a couple while working there at cost. Our cost. $38. They can return one 5 times and still break even on it. Compare that rod to a $199 st. Croix and there's no comparison, but the warranty sold the scheels rod 9 times out of 10. Are most people fishing (in our case glassing) at a high enough level to notice a difference? Doubtful. For that person the warranty is worth the money. In my opinion you are getting a lesser product for the money without a doubt. I have a our of vortex for my neck Binos. I best the absolute sh!t out of them when crawling Etc. I know that I could've gotten better glass in a swaro bino if same money (not quite comparable because the swaros were more but you catch my drift) but I'm willing to give up quality in a neck bino for warranty. In my opinion I'm not hand holding a bino steady enough to know the difference and if (most likely "when") I wreck them I can send them in for a new pair! Whether or not thats a deal breaker is up to you. If you absolutely positively need the best fishing rod/15's etc money can buy then I think you need to go with the g loomis or the swaros. If you deal with paying slightly more for an 80% product knowing that you're covered if an accident happens then I think the warranty product is the way to go. What are your guys' thoughts?

Thanks again for doing this!!!

Interesting insight. I think we are all on the same page. It really sounds like we mostly have the same opinions on it. I plinko'd my 15 SLC's down through a rock pile last year on a NM elk hunt. It was my fault. Didn't tighten the pistol grip clamp screw. I sent them in and they replaced the lenses, $250. I think that's fair since I broke them. Would it have been free if they were kaibabs? Likely. Am I willing to go back to kaibabs in this stage of my life? Nope. My only compliant was they took 6 weeks. I was really frustrated with that.

7mm Rem Mag Memorial Build
yotebuster replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My dad always used to say "this was my great great grandpas hammer, it's only had 7 new handles and 3 new heads". Sorry I'm another vote for leaving it as is. Sweet looking build though! My dad bought me a Winchester model 70 classic sporter (wood/blued) in 7mm STWfor my 12th bday in 1995. It's killed an absolute pile of eastern white tails (50+) a few mule deer and coues, 3 oryx, Barbary sheep, a bunch of elk, and a moose or two. I plan to use it as my go to gun for my whole hunting career. The barrel is about washed out so I know that's gonna have to be changed out but I've kept everything else stock. I had a gunsmith glass the entire innards of the stock and that helped a ton. Kept the same look on the outside but settled down the accuracy issues I was having with shifting weather. Anyhow you could look into something like that? It wouldn't be as accurate as the build you're planning but it'd still look like grandpas rifle when you pass it to your kids and they to theirs. Just my 2 cents. Whatever you do with it you will think of him every time you kill something with it! -
Time for some Binocs. So... 8x or 10x... and Why?
yotebuster replied to azcoyote's topic in The Campfire
You're on the right track. 8's for sure for off hand glassig. I actually have 6.5's and 7's for my neck binos. 10's are a sorry compromise between a good hand hold bino and a good tripod bino. If you aren't carrying a tripod then 8's are the absolute highest I'd go. If they're for hand holding and tripod mounting and you can only afford one pair, then get 10's. -
What's the deepest snow you have called fox in?
yotebuster replied to Presmyk's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
Sounds like a lot of work. I'd go somewhere where there isn't 2 ft of snow. There will be fox there too. -

Rage 3-blade broadhead SUCK!?!?!
yotebuster replied to AZ_Native's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
+1 IT is impossible for them NOT to open, by design. As far as broken blades, in my opinion if a blade hits something so hard it's going to break it, it's also gonna slow the arrow so much your penetration is gone, so I'd prefer that blade break off to save the penetration. A non broken blade that stops at the shoulder is much less effective then a one bladed arrow that makes the vitals in my opinion. -
Daaaaang.

Rage 3-blade broadhead SUCK!?!?!
yotebuster replied to AZ_Native's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I have lost a turkey and the biggest whitetail of my career (found him two weeks later) as well as a double lunged bull elk that went 1 mile and required 4 follow up shots with rage 3 blades. I can't put my finger on why, they just didn't die quickly?!? I switched to the 2 blades and have had nothing but good luck. Weird I know and totally anecdotal evidence, but that was enough for me to switch. -
Could I glass the desert from ND with these?
