That's coooool!!

Yes, that thread is pretty entertaining. The whole drone issue is topic that seems to be somewhat polarizing. Maybe we should all lock arms in solidarity. But wait, that's a different thread. What brought this to mind was I was looking at a GPS track on a map of someone tracking/searching for a lost elk. In the terrain they were in, the tracks that took them 6 hours to walk could be covered in less than 1 hour and the "thickets" that they still wondered about could be easily viewed from above. In this case, not using the drone for scouting, hunting or harassing but to aid in the recovery of a big game animal just makes sense to me... But then, I also don't drive down closed roads in the forest. Silly me. As far as being able to see an animal from a drone, depending on the terrain of course, an elk tends to stand out like a big, fat sore thumb. It was just a thought.... I agree. I have one to mess around with and wouldn't hesitate to use it for a lost animal if needed. Haven't wounded anything since I got it knock on wood. I remember as a kid riding in the loader of a tractor raised up looking for a dead whitetail in a cattail slough. In a situation like that it would work perfect. I guess it's up to the individual whether it's worth the ticket if it's in a state that it's illegal in.

Not sure how you will find a stud with a plywood backed wall. Stud finder won't work. Might have to just start feeling around with a small drill bit I guess as I'm not even sure you could pound a small nail into plywood well enough to feel a stud. I have a moose head and an elk head that are hung on plywood as our house is SIP panels and all walls are plywood with drywall over them. They are rock solid but my taxidermist uses a special bracket he makes out of metal that will take 4 screws and the mount locks onto it.

Well I have been super lucky in the draws this year so logistics for this years season were a little tricky. I got it rolling this last weekend in Wyoming with antelope. This was a solo hunt but kind of fun in its own way. I made it down Friday mid day and spent the day scouting. I saw a few other hunters so I kept working my way further from civilization. I was sleeping in the pickup and had a full tank of gas so I had no reason to leav until I killed a buck. I honestly must have looked at 1000 bucks!! I took pictures of a ton and found a few that I thought were high 70's and one that I thought was around 80-81. I hunted a day and a half looking for something bigger and decided to go back to the best one I had found. It took a little work but I got him killed Sunday mid day. His ivory tips weren't visible in the spotter so he ended up being longer then I expected (15 1/2"). He has awesome prongs that are just a tiny touch shy of 7". He ended up grossing 83". I'm extremely excited about the hunt and the best thing is I have a pile of awesome hunts lined up for the rest of the fall. Next stop is Utah elk. Then on to Montana for Shiras moose then to NM for another antelope! Rounding it all off with antelope in MT and whitetail in my home state!!! Love this time of year!!!

You could kill a buck like the ones in the first pics in any unit in the state. Those are probably 60-65" antelope at best and are available everywhere. Just find a unit with some public land and go hunting. You can still buy a preference point for this year so be sure to do that as you'll be opened up to a lot more units you could draw with one point. The unit I hunted was one of the premier units in the state and takes a bunch of points to draw. The main reason you'd wait for that is to get a high scoring buck. It's still nowhere even close to the quality of AZ as I truly did look over atleast 1000 bucks to find that one. If you glassed 20 bucks in AZ before season you'd find one bigger then the one I killed. The cool thing about Wyoming antelope is there's a million of them so if you just wanna shoot one then pic a unit with a bunch of public (or private access for a fee if you are capable) and go. You literally can't mess it up and you will kill your bucks.

Haha. Sort of. I'm self employed and have an awesome wife.

"Hunters" should get as many as they need to have an ethical and enjoyable experience. I think you are confusing us with "poachers" who shouldn't get any bullets.

Congrats! What unit out of curiousity?

Az is part of the interstate wildlife pact so if you lose your privileges on any one you lose it in all. Those you stated are also part. 45 states or so.

You don't see this very often... Banded Dove
yotebuster replied to Avid Hunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Different type of Doves down there, ours don't migrate to there. We actually killed a banded duck in Uruguay once. It was on a teal and it was a mallard sized band that the over crimped to fit. It just said the word "Brazil" and a bunch of numbers. The bird boys and outfitter had never seen one out of the tens of thousands of ducks they shoot!!! -
What to expect on unit 10, Sept 8th Antelope hunt
yotebuster replied to Viper's topic in Antelope Hunting
Get a couple days to scout ahead of time. That is one of if not the best antelope tags in the world. He should be able to kill a great buck and not just a representative buck. You can go to Montana or Wyoming and shoot a representative buck every year, take some extra time to get up and scout a big one, be there at opening light and get him killed. Good luck and post pics!!This is the best advice you could get on antelope hunting. If you don't put a buck to bed don't expect to go find your 2nd or 3 choice buck. An antelope hunt done right should be over within the first 15 minutes of legal light. Find a toad. Sleep with him and kill him in the morning.Everyone is welcome to their own opinion, but I could not disagree more with this statement. All of my antelope hunts have been similar, I decided that hunting was more important to me than killing. I took time to find bucks in out of the way places with less pressure or to hunt after opening weekend. On the AZ tags I have been a part of we spent time looking bucks over, played cat and mouse for days and ended up killing with shots under 200 yds. For me it was just more important to have a hunt than to execute a trophy like a grazing cow from 1,000 yds. Everyone told me to put him to bed and get it done early, I didn't, and I am really happy I didn't. And I ended up with a decent buck. I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure your buck was far better than 'decent'. Flatlanders buck was a giant in my book! I will say however that your hunt was in a unit with very few tags as opposed to unit 10 so it would be a tough comparison to make. There aren't very many 87" bucks in unit 10 on a given year and most of them are gonna go down on opening morning. If he's happy with a mid 70's buck then he could go anytime and kill one in there but what I was trying to say is that one can go to Wyoming or Montana any given year and kill a buck like that so if he wanted to make the most of his tag (in regards to size of animal) then he better pick one out before season and try to get him killed right away in the am. I never said anything about 1000 yard shots and never will. Just be ready to make the most of your opportunities within your comfort zone. I drew one of the best Wyoming antelope tags this year and I'm beyond jealous of anyone with even the worst AZ tag!!! It really is that good in AZ. -

Just got my buck back from last year. I think it turned out great. I wanted to hang him next to my 2010 buck from the same unit. Shot them about 2 miles apart. My 2010 buck was DIY and last year I hired the Priest brothers to help me out since i was coming down from ND. Great guys and fun to hunt with. Hoping I can get lucky and get another tag someday!
