Success rates and some loaded questions
yotebuster replied to POk3s's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Don’t forget that if you are in the max point pool for your second choice you will draw that prior to ever having a chance in the random draw at your first choice. If I had to guess the 10% NR cap won’t be too critical in a coues hunt but I could be wrong. -
Mine came out of Idaho. It’s probably on the larger size then average. He was 42” wide. Didn’t score great because of narrow palms and kind of a weird layout but I didn’t care. I wanted a mature moose and he was. Biologist said 6.5-7.5yr old. Best eating wild game I’ve ever had. I actually got lucky and pulled a Montana moose tag the following year. Not near the hunt quality and actually a way way way tougher tag to draw. Killed a 2.5 yr old bull and it was the only moose we saw in 6 days. Biologist told me there were only 10-15 moose in the unit and to shoot the first one I saw, cow or bull.

Couple of pics of my bull!

Nice!!! What unit?!? I drew a few years ago and if I remember correctly you said you had lived in the unit I had? I can dial you in if that’s one (assuming you’re all over it though!). I’m jealous. I’ve done a lot of hunts and my Idaho moose tag was the most fun I’ve ever had on a hunt!!! I switched to sheep and got a dear John letter again this year of course.

I don’t know what they’re worth but I’ve been wanting one of these for years!! If you decide to sell it PM me. That being said I’ll start the bidding at $500

Unit 21 herd....Edit...Pics and story
yotebuster replied to azelkhunter69's topic in Antelope Hunting
I definitely think there’s always a chance of a good one but it’s not a unit that if you scout all summer and don’t find the giant you’re looking for you can expect one to randomly show up. What’s there is there and he might have to be happy with just a nice buck if that’s all that around. -
Looks like quakies!!!

What bipod is that?

Unit 21 herd....Edit...Pics and story
yotebuster replied to azelkhunter69's topic in Antelope Hunting
You should be able to look at just about every buck in the unit. I’m not much help on spots as the places you listed are all the places I’ve seen them in there. Pick the biggest one out and keep your finger on him and pray an archery hunter doesn’t kill him before you get a chance. Kill him at opening light. I could be wrong but there haven’t been a ton of huge bucks that came out of there. Someone posted one on here years back that was a toad but I’d be real surprised if there’s an 82” buck in there. Never know though!! -
Great pics! Looks like fun!

Going off of what flatlander said, yes it is one of the lower tier units in the state but a low tier AZ unit is better then a high end unit in just about every other state. I’d take the tag you have over all but the best NM tag, and I’d take it over almost all Utah tags. You’ll have a great hunt. Lots of elk in there, essentially every where you look.

A coues with a glock has to be some kind of record. Let alone a giant coues! Count me impressed!

Nice work Scott! I’ve always heard you had to shoot them out of a roost tree in the dark!?! Do they actually call in? What kind of noise do them make? Anyone run hounds for the jags or are they protected?

Contrary to popular thought, open sights will be much harder to line up on moving game. You not only have to track the animal with a moving rifle but you have two things to line up instead of one with a scope or red dot. I would look into a 2-12 scope or similar if you’re gonna a shoot at running game a lot.

Smokin deal. I want one of these!!

I have an inreach. They allow contracts that you can turn on and off on monthly increments. $20-60 a month depending on your amount of texts. It blue tooth’s to your phone so you can type through there. Also has the SOS feature in case you get hurt. I really like it. Saved my sanity when I had my kaibab buffalo tag and sat in a blind for 10 days straight.

Nosler 48 NCH Handgun
yotebuster replied to Buff-it Ranch's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I see where you’re coming from, but maybe it’s just one of those because you can kinda guns. I see a 6-700 yard HAM gun there with the right optics and a good rest. -
Email sent.

Does the 3000bdx give you a ballistic solution in the viewfinder like the ABS? I have been patiently waiting for sig to come out with a bino version of the ABS and don’t quite understand the difference? Love my 2400ABS!! Bump for a good deal

There’s a ton of forest service up there. You can camp anywhere you want. Antelope hunting is just getting out and driving and looking. The more hours you can spend behind the wheel and behind the glass the better chance you have of turning up a big boy. I wouldn’t stress too much about scouting in the summer. Use that time leading up to the hunt. If you can scout for a week beforehand that’s even better. I’d take 5 days of scouting and only having opening morning to hunt over having 6 days there during the season. Call the warden in that unit, they will point you in the right area where there are antelope but I’m guessing they’re gonna say they are everywhere, because they are. The common places with lots of antelope will have more hunters as well.

Also make sure you stop back next fall and post a pic.

Congrats on the tag!!! You are correct on it being once in a lifetime. You were even lucky to pull it with your points. Looks like you had about a 1.4% chance even with all those points! I would think really really hard about hiring Eli at pronghorn guide service. I know you said money is tight but take a loan or sell some guns or something as this is your one chance at the plate for a 87-90” antelope. Could you kill one DIY? Yes for sure. Being able to sort out what is what is the problem. If you don’t really care so much about size then you won’t have any trouble on your own. Antelope are easy to find and easy to kill as you probably know. Telling the difference between and 82” and an 87” is the tough part. Good problem to have though. If you do decide to DIY. I would strongly suggest you take your time off before the hunt. Show up about 3-4 days early even if it’s at the expense of missing days on the end of the hunt. The biggest bucks will get killed right away on opening morning so if you just roll in then you are at a huge disadvantage. Take a camera and take tons of pics of bucks so you can look them over side by side. I’m jealous. I’ve killed a bunch of antelope but never a giant. Sorry I’m really no help in 9 as I’ve only passed through. Should be antelope in all parts of the unit, from the pines to the cedars to the prairie.
