    Excalibur 2.5 Day 8/24-8/25

They said 10-15#. I honestly would’ve said they were a little smaller then that just based on weighing freshwater fish I’ve caught over the years, but they’re dense and rounds so maybe they weighed that much. Here’s a pic.

    Excalibur 2.5 Day 8/24-8/25

I went out of Westport WA for albacore last weekend. My wife booked a 6 pack day boat for family. Everyone but my father and law and I ended up dropping out for various reasons. We went 45 miles off shore. First time tuna fishing and it was incredible!!! Most fun I’ve ever had fishing!! Sounds like it only gets better and better when you have more people on the boat. We ended up with 27 between the two of us. The captain actually jumped in on one bite and jackpoled one!!! Cool to see. Got hit on the troll within a half hour every time but had trouble keeping them up on the bait with only two fisherman. 150# of fresh albacore for us!! I’ve never had it fresh, it’s incredible!!! Now I know what tuna fishing is all about. I want to get down your way and try for bluefin and yellowfin!!

Thoughts on use of point guard

What people haven’t pointed out here is that the tag doesn’t go unused. It get reissued. So someone still burns points every year to utilize that tag. The main problem with point systems is lack of turnover thus leading to point creep. In this case as long as the tag gets reissued and someone claims it, the turnover occurs and that’s what keeps it going. It is kind of a dick move to drop a primo tag in the next high point guys lap with no time to scout, but I’ve never heard anyone complain.

Never thought i would turn this tag back in

Muzzy is better. Get first crack at them. There’s no antelope in the world that can’t be killed with a scoped muzzleloader and a little time.

Draw the 19b muzzy tag next year. Guaranteed draw. They’re dying of old age over there and a muzzy is just as good as a rifle when it comes to antelope.

I’d do the same if that’s all you can find. You can shoot a buck like the first one every couple years in WY or MT. The second one is a real nice buck, but I’m guessing still right around 80 maybe a bit better. You can kill a buck like that on a decent priced landowner tag in NM any year you want. An AZ tag is a special thing. I’d hang onto those points.

Moisture doesn’t always equal big antelope. If that were the case ND would have giants. Our bucks wade around in chest deep alfalfa and soybeans all summer and rarely break 78”. I think in the really dry parts of NM a wet year will throw out some big ones but I honestly think for a majority of AZ, particularly the higher country units, an average or even drier then average year is best for antelope growth. The feed gets watered down and doesn’t have the protein it needs to grow big horns.

Because those numbers came out of thin air. Winter mortality, hunting, blue tongue and predators are all huge contributors to deer populations, some more heavily influential in some areas on whitetails and others worse in mule deer. The amount of variables makes it impossible to pin a number on what has happened to populations in CWD “infected” areas. Couple that with the fact that game and fish agencies have made it SOP to go in and eradicate deer in areas the happen to find it and you have no effective way of know what is happening with it on a population wide perspective.

    35B October hunt

If you’re seeing does and not bucks you need to look in the same type of country but get further off the road. Bucks that live by the road have a short shelf life. Most people think bucks are smarter then does but it’s more that they just get killed when they live by the road and they don’t when they live a ways off the road.

    Good Luck Pronghorn Hunters!

Between your buffalo, that antelope, and hopefully a muley this year you’ve killed some seriously big sh1t the last few years.

    Pinpointing downed animal

I empty the rest of my ammo into a nearby tree and try to blow all the bark and foliage off and better yet start a small fire with the sparks. Then when you get over to the area you can reference where you shot from by the big shiny pile of brass.

    Top units

I’ve read the hype about 3c. Spent very little time in there except fishing and shed hunting, but I honestly can’t say I’ve ever seen a pic of a big big one that came out of there? Like 200 plus? I’ve looked at the guides websites up there and they claim it as a 180-200 hunt but honestly of the dozens and dozens of bucks I see on there pics very few break 170 and most are 150-160 bucks. Fine bucks of course, but curious if I’m missing something. You can shoot a buck like that every year in MT, WY or CO. Curious why someone would burn a dozen points on it?

I had an 87” antelope patterned on water. Blind set at 25 yards. The two bucks he’d been with all summer watered just after first light. He came over the hill about an hour later. Skirted my blind and bedded at 83 yards. I had an 80 yard pin that I was confident in, but had about a 10mph crosswind. Decided there’s no way he’d bed that close if he suspected anything and figured he’d get up and water later that am. He layed there for 3 hours, then got up and walked out of my life. Rained 3” that night. Ended up killing another good buck but will probably never have a chance at a buck like that again.

It’s not considered “stretching” data when there is no data to stretch. Essentially we start finding CWD when we start looking for it. States will ramp up their surveillance for it and all the sudden they find it and claim it “spread”. I 100% promise you that my home state of ND would still be CWD free if they went back to 2010 (or rather had maintained) surveillance methods, which was essentially not looking for it at all short of mandatory testing of all dead captive elk and deer. (Hence why they always “find” it in captive herds first). Follow the “wrath” of CWD and you’ll find the good ol days of deer hunting anywhere it’s been “found”.

    Out of state hunters

CWD is already in AZ. It’s in every state and has been for centuries. They just haven’t looked hard enough for it. Game and fish found the third deer in ND with it back in February. About 1/2 mile from my house. Came in and shot 52 deer off the wintering ground. (Essentially the only deer in the area). Of course none of them had CWD. Completely wiped out the deer on my place for this year. I had several 5-7 yr old bucks coming up this year too. The game and fish is their own worst enemy when it comes to CWD. 25 years ago it hit the covers of magazines as the “end of deer hunting as we know it”. Short of the game and fish killing off entire counties it has had ZERO impact. Colorado went through the best years of mule deer they’ve had in a generation right in the peak of the CWD scare there. Wisconsin and Michigan have had some of the best deer hunting in modern times (due to QDM) right in the middle of CWD’s alleged wrath. As JayZ would say “we got 99 problems but CWD ain’t one”

If you bring your deer or elk back the way most people do, boned meat, cape and a clean skull plate it doesn’t affect you in any way. Has nothing to do with antelope or bears. They’ve been doing this for years in almost all states east of AZ.
