This thread is awesome. I started reading it expecting it to be another I want your spots but not your honey hole thread but ended up pleasantly surprised. Sounds like you’ve got the drive RedBilly. Good luck with the hunt. You truly picked one of the toughest hunts to start out with but that makes it all the sweeter when you glass your first bull or better yet kill one. I don’t know a ton about unit 10 but I do know that in a late archery hunt having someone to help you as a spotter is going to be the biggest piece of advice I can give you. Figure out a set of radios with ear buds or text if you have service but the most important thing you can have is eyes on you and on the bull. I can’t count how many stalks ive blown because and animal got up and started feeding and I was just closing in. I’ve also killed a pile of them because my sporter let me know and I took a knee and they fed right to me. I wish I knew about unit 10 but I don’t. Good luck and keep us posted on how you do. Anyone driven enough to use a ride share rental to get to the Big Bo to scout has the drive to get it done if you ask me!!

I’ve heard good things about something called base maps. Supposedly same as onx but $29/ yr for whole country. If it’s legit that’s awesome. I’ve been running onx for a decade and won’t leave home without it now.

Just checked draw results in MT and I drew a mountain goat tag!! Never stepped foot in the unit so I have a lot of learning to do in a short time! Looks like an alpine backpack hunt. Should be a riot! Started running last night as I only have until sept 1 to get my butt in shape for this! Looking for a new lightweight rifle. Any suggestions? Id like a proof summit but they are way to far out on the builds. Kimber has the ascent that a guy can get off the rack, but Ive had bad luck with kimbers being kinda erratic. Anyone have a sweet lightweight rifle they are looking to sell?

I had ten points and got lucky in MT. About a 4% chance in the unit I applied to. They have a squared bonus point system so just starting out you have very little chance. It could reasonably take you 20 years or more but you never know. I did this hunt on my own so short of the $1200 tag fee and the gas to get there it was just sweat equity. Idaho doesn’t have a point system and has some really good goat odds. (Like 1:4 type odds). Down fall is you have to eat a $150 license to apply for the one species. I think you can go to SE Alaska for about $7-10k but getting there and back will be another $2k or so. I really enjoyed this hunt as did it with my brothers and wife and backpacked into some cool country. They aren’t bad eating despite what people say. We’ve really enjoyed the meat actually. Like a tough antelope.

I went to NZ a few years back. It’s a bucket list for sure but if I could do it again I’d save the money and just sight see. All of the big stags (250”+) are high fenced. I shot one. First and last time I’ll do it. I’d take a 4b archery bull tag over a NZ stag hunt in a heartbeat.

Thought I’d throw up a quick update. Got my mount back last fall but finally got around to hanging it this weekend. We have 22’ peaks in our house (which is a shop with living quarters) so we have to rent a scissor lift to hang anything heavier then deer!!!

They hunt that statewide, all unit, OTC tag don’t they? The flexible season dates would be nice on that. Just make sure you don’t shoot two or you’d be breaking the law.

How big of a set of balls do you have to have to turn back a rifle antelope tag you drew with 10pts?!?

This is intriguing!! Will any router work with 12v? I woulda thought you’d need an inverter? I usually just use my pioneer to drive over there but I spend more time driving then shooting a lot of time!!

That would definitely be possible. It’s called galvanic shock. Tin foil and metal fillings will definitely get it going.

I don’t lie. I just smile and nod. Every day I hear about how a lady had nice teeth until her baby robbed her teeth of calcium, how someone’s wisdom teeth came in and “crushed” their other teeth, shoot I’ve even had people claim they can pick up radio stations through their silver fillings. All the aforementioned are 100% impossible. When I was right out of school I used to try to correct them on it. It doesn’t work. Just smile, nod, and fix their actual problems. Works out better for everyone. Back to topic. I have had plenty of broken teeth come in from bullet fragments and pellets in meat. It’s a legit problem. I just wish copper bullets acted like lead core in my really accurate guns. My middle of the road guns that shoot around 1 moa seem to be fine with copper at about the same, it’s the really accurate stuff not liking them. Maybe it’s the fault of the guy behind the reloading press and the trigger though as it seems plenty of other guys have good luck with them?

I sometimes agree with patients on things that I know aren’t true as it’s easier then trying to change their mind on what they think. It is 100% impossible for lead to imbed into your teeth from sinkers. Break them? Yes. Leave lead stuck in them. No. Silver amalgam fillings are often on the side pits of your teeth, and often times chunks of silver filling will imbed into your gums when they are cut out at high speed. Google “amalgam tatoo” and it’ll explain it.

I try Barnes in all of my rifles but I have yet to find one except my .375 H&H that likes them. Also the post about the split shot leaving lead on someone’s teeth is 100% false. That cannot and won’t happen.

Yeah I listened to it. It’s gonna be a mad rush next year. Maybe even this year. My dad and brother have 22. We’re gonna go kill some stuff the next couple years. Shoulda burned them back when I had 8-10. Wish I had 20-22 points in AZ for anything!!

I’m gonna dump them next year. I’m thinking 44 2nd season (currently takes like 9 points so I think I’d be ahead of the game with 21) and take advantage of the new season dates essentially making it a 3rd season. Or 67 4th season and take advantage of the really late dates.

So it’s essentially two things at play, a policy change starting in 2020 pushing all the dates back, but due to 4 year calendar change, it starts out on the earliest timeframe it will ever be thus effectively negating the policy change for one year. Then in 2021 the policy change from this year lands on the latest dates the calendar allows which is the perfect storm, essentially turning the new 2nd season into a third season, new 3rd into a 4th and the new 4th season into a slaughter fest. I anticipate a lot of people will hold off this year in anticipation of 21 but maybe most people don’t dig into it as deep as I do? I do know that point creep is gonna explode in 2021.
