    School me on getting suppressors

I’ve shot my .28 nosler without earplugs suppressed and never noticed it being abnormally loud.

I hope everyone has that attitude!!

    Elk draw "points"

Normally I’d tell people to actually search the points they had last year to see if they’ll draw but in the case of these hunts there’s a lot of tags and not much demand so the point creep isn’t out of control.

    Elk draw "points"

You could draw 7e or 11m September archery. 3b November muzzy or a 4,5,6,7 or 8 late rifle tag. Just depends on what you want out of your hunt. Should be able to kill a bull on any of those if you aren’t super picky.

Best unit for 2022 with 23 points resident

If you’re gonna hire a guide I’d put in for 23n 1st and 23s 2nd. Or vice versa. They added some tags in there so you might pick off either one in the max pass. Then hire the Ground Pounders and go shoot a giant bull.

    arizona elk??

Which weapon? Looks like you could only draw 7e or 11m for September archery. You could get any November archery tag. Late rifle you can get pretty much any of the units except the alternative management units (1, 3a/c, 23, 27, 9, 10). Muzzy, most of the late but none of the early. If you can’t pass a raghorn type bull they are availabale in any unit so just pick one with a weapon you know you can get it done on and go hunting. I personally would go to CO and hunt a OTC area and knock a small bull off my bucket list and save my AZ points did a unit and hunt that can produce a big bull more consistently.

I actually like 4b. Had a 380-390 bull on cam there when I had that tag years ago.

With 23 points, 4b late rifle should be a lock.

    BIg Game Draw Application mistake

Are you a hopi tribal member? I think they’re pretty easy to get tags if you are. That’s a slick deal if so!

Don’t know the name but I don’t get out a lot around here. Pretty much just work and hunt or head to my farm 3.5hrs away if I have free time.

    Preferred Tactics

I guess I’ve been on 6 rut hunts in AZ and 2 in western NM and had blinds up ahead of time and bulls hitting water most of the summer and never spent a second in any of the blinds as it has rained on every single hunt I’ve been on down there. Maybe I’m just unlucky, or lucky depending on how you look at it. Probably should have phrased it like this “I wouldn’t be set on sitting water as there’s a good chance you’ll get rained on during your hunt if it’s September archery”.

It is. How many points you have?

I’m not sure where you heard to sit water, but know that the rainiest time of year in AZ is archery elk season. Unless it’s a dud of a monsoon it’ll probably rain every couple days or more. Obviously if it’s dry it can be a good tactic but certainly don’t count on it. As far as chasing them goes, just try to head off a bugle, figure out which direction they’re going and flank them and set up in front and let them move past. They bugle a lot in AZ compared to most places I’ve hunted elk, so just stay quiet and let them tell you where to be.

    Need a partner

All good advice. If you’re renting a car be sure there’s a spare and jack as you’ll probably wreck a tire if you climb out of the flats anywhere. There’s deer all over that unit and plenty of hammock trees in the canyons.

    Day Dreaming for Antelope

I drew a red desert tag in WY 3-4 years back and had a great time and killed my personal best buck. I’ve been blessed with 2 AZ archery tags and killed two bucks that are very different shape but both scored within 1/8” of each other. I’ve killed three antelope in NM with rifle on landowner and draw tags. This is the best one. I burned a few points in colorado a couple years back and killed a nice buck with an open sight muzzy. That was a fun hunt! I live 15 minutes from the Montana line and have been lucky enough to get tags almost every year. My brother killed a good one in there last year but most of them are smallish but if you think antelope is good, you need to try antelope that have been eating alfalfa, peas, lentils and soybeans all summer! My home state of ND used to have OTC archery tags and my buddies and I used to give them heck back in the pre rangefinder days. I killed 3-4 of them with bow and drew a couple rifle tags. After a bad winter in 2013 I believe they shut all antelope hunting down and finally opened it a few years ago. I have 12-13 points and may draw soon. The first year they opened it was awesome. My brother killed this awesome 3 pronged buck that was the oldest antelope I’ve ever seen. They’ve shot the top end of since though. If you can’t tell, I LOVE antelope hunting. I’ve been fortunate enough to kill 15 antelope and have marching orders from my wife to make sure I kill atleast one every year in the future!
