Advice Please - Wary, Mature Coues Bucks
yotebuster replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
This is exactly how I feel, I didn't do such a great job of wording it the first time but this is what I was thinking of doing with the second tree stand. I figure that the bucks ARE going to come back to check things out, they may or may not want the salt at the stand, but if anything, they will be coming on by and may want to take a look as curious as they are.. That curious look upwards toward the stand may be the perfect opportunity.. I would put up a blind where you have a easy shot on the salt and stay the heck out of there for a few days. I haven't hunted out of a treestand for 10+ years and probably won't for the rest of my life, wind has considerably less effect when in a blind with the windows closed. That's the other thing, leave a window or two open with shooting lanes but that's it, you'll have time for watching nature after you fill your tag. I don't think the bucks are coming back because they are curious to see if you are in your stand, or because they are passing through, they are coming there to eat the salt, plain and simple, and will come in and eat it if they don't smell you. -

Lesson Learned....Touche Fort Huachuca....Touche
yotebuster replied to NWhunter's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I haven't hunted off post before, but my guess is the deer get less pressure then they do on post. They pound them during the dec rifle hunt on there. 125 dec tags on that little place. -

I would double check that. As far as I know civilian contractors and their family's can hunt. The big fat dude that gives out the gun permits at the gate used to hunt every year, and he was a civilian. I know this cuz he used to give me crap about hunting on there as a guardsman. Used to piss me off because he was a civilian giving me a hard time. -
Wow!! Wow. Wow. Wow.

A dbl barrel 28 will kick more then an auto 20. I would do an auto 12 ga and shoot light loads out of it.

If it falls through I'll take it.

J/k. I probably just jinxed myself on ever getting a 13B tag.
-
Soooo. I drew a 13B gun tag on my 17th choice with 38 preference points, never stepped foot in the unit, looking for nothing less then a 270"er. I don't have a quad or a 4x4, only one leg, can't afford a guide, and don't have time to scout. Can you guys help me out?!? Not looking for anyone's honey hole, I'd like EVERYONE'S honey hole.

How 'bout a 1996 Four Winns 17ft fish and ski with a 135 I/O? Bow mount motorguide with key fob steering and a depth finder. Only problem is it's in ND Although my buddy is driving down for an archery elk hunt in Sept.

I knew the minute I saw this pic that someone was going to start calling it a whitetail or a hybrid. Every mule deer with eyeguards starts this same dang conversation!!

Dove season is just around the corner -
If I had to choose between those two, I would definitely go with the vortex, and then sell it and buy a Leica and be done with it. I don't know anyone who's owned anything other then a Leica (except maybe the Swaro which IMO is overpriced and too big) that has been happy with it. Just my two cents that'll save you a bunch of cents!

I don't think anyone asked what unit it was in? I believe Eli asked if he had a tag to go after it, which was what I was wondering when I saw the pic, I always like following someone in their scouting if they have a tag, makes it more exciting. Besides, no offense to this buck, but my guess is any auction hunter isn't overly interested in an 78-83" buck like this one. It's a nice buck, but my guess is won't score that crazy high unless his prongs are way better then they appear to be.

Shoot the crossbow heads, they are awesome. The groove is deeper so they retain the blades way better when stalking or putting in a quiver.

I've got one in a 300 H&H. It has an old Lyman 2.5x on it. Shoots sweet. Gonna shoot a deer with it this year just to say I did it.
