    Advice on cold weather states

I grew up on a farm, nearest town was 65 people. Went to high school 20 miles away in a town of 800. Great place to grow up. I really enjoyed growing up in a small town and still have a farm there where I try to get to on the weekends. There’s nothing in a city that I need.

    Advice on cold weather states

I was born and raised and currently live in ND. I spent 4 years in AZ. I felt like the summers in AZ were much worse than a winter in ND. That being said I was raised here and this is what I’m used to. I felt like eirher one is miserable, but I got borderline depressed in AZ in the summer as there’s zero relief in sight, until October. In ND jn the winter, it might get down to -20 for a low for a few days but there’s always relief on the horizon. We get what they call Chinook winds and they’ll bring in some 40-50 degree days here and there throughout the winter. Sometimes weeks of it. Helena will be even warmer. You can atleast go out in it and enjoy the day. The summers I spent jn the valley, there was a 0% chance of any change in the weather, even the Monsoons just brought humidity and little relief in my opinion. As far as the hunting, MT public land hunting is not as good as AZ, BUT, you get to hunt every year. OTC rut hunting for elk and deer every year. You can very easily kill a small 6pt bull elk, and a 150-170 class muley or 135-150 class whitetail every year if you hunt a little. You can’t do that every year jn AZ with the draw. Antelope are about every other year for resident draw. AZ otc is coming to an end so if you want to hunt elk and deer every year, MT is your place. Breaks archery elk tags are every other year or so and may not offer the top end as a high end AZ elk unit, but you’ll be hunting 300-330 bulls daily in there. The bird hunting is expceptional if that’s something your into, and the fishing top notch.

    Washington

Walk on at ferry terminal on the island and ride into downtown Seattle. You can work remotely while commuting that way and live in a way cooler place than anything you can get to within a drive to Seattle.

    Washington

Like they were saying, everyone else has the same idea. It’s 1.5-2hr commute to anywhere in downtown Seattle from anywhere that would even come close to resembling suburbia, and 2.5hrs+ to anything that would resemble country. Honestly if I were to have to work in Downtown Seattle, I would look to live in Vashon or Bainbridge island and take the walk on ferry to work every day. My in-laws live in Tacoma and I love it there except for all the people.

Dang. If it was a foot shift I’d be all over this.
  10. That southern express for sale on here is about the best you can get and it’s way cheaper then it should be
  11. Sure it wasn’t a heron of some sort. There’s some cranes that nest in the mountains in UT and maybe CO but the vast majority of them nest north of the arctic circle.

    Fluid Head for Binos

I don’t think the Jim White is a fluid head but I could be wrong.
  13. I’ve shot hundreds of cranes, while decoying is fun, I would say 80% of mine have been shot pass shooting. Go out a morning early and watch where they come off the roost at and where they go feed first thing in the am. Then find a spot preferably 1/2 mile out from the roost that’s got good cover and hang out there at daylight the next morning. Don’t really need a blind if there’s some brush, fence lines etc. Just spread out and lay super still and make sure they are directly over you when you shoot. If a flock slides by on the side don’t be tempted. They look way bigger from the side and are always further than they appear. You can kill a crane at 70-80 yards with high velocity steel 2’s or BB’s if they’re right over the top of you. They are one of the easiest birds to kill.

    Congratulations to those that drew

Thanks! No I never did. I’ll maybe try to write one this summer and post it before hunting season kicks off again. I drew a rocky bighorn tag in CO, UT mtn goat, MT breaks rifle elk, AZ late rifle elk, and that AZ desert tag so I had a pretty wild fall last year.

    Congratulations to those that drew

I had mine last year and it’s pretty much one of two things that I spend most of my time thinking about now.

    Its official, I have a sheep tag - 45C

Spotting scope and a phone scope are absolutely necessary. Take a bunch of pics so you can sort out what is what. Spend a bunch of time scouting. I’d find someone with the early tag and horn in on their camp and hang with them. Then have a ram picked that made it and roll him on opening day.

    Draw question

I hate to say it but Casey is probably right. I know in NV they spell it out in the regs and it’s 1st choice only for turn backs when they go to next in line. Which actually brings up an interesting strategy as most people swing for the fences with their first choice and then work their way down to what they’d accept. Had a good buddy get a turn back elk tag in NV this year and it’s one do the top units, but the later hunt, which he always puts as first choice because it works better for his guiding schedule. Made me really think about it, that there were probably thousands of guys who’s name woulda come up before him but they all had the earlier hunts for first choice, or another unit that was slightly better then this one. Makes me wonder if a guy might be better off just putting what you’re happy with as first choice and sending it?

How long until cards are hit??

We can only hope that happens. As of now funding for what we love falls 100% on hunters shoulders. If we could only get antis to chip in and not shoot a deer it would be incredible. Even if they submit a harvest report as a kill, the fact of the matter is they didn’t kill so eventually population objectives would allow for more tags and we could have our cake and eat it too. Bring them on, hopefully they tell their friends.

How long until cards are hit??

There is a ginormous blob of NR applicants with 15-20+ points. Thousands. There are about 30-50 tags a year that they actually want and are “worth” their points (in most applicants minds) so it’s essentially created a sheep tag like situation where the max point group is established and won’t go away until they die. Expect early kaibab to take 40+ points for NR before it plateaus and kaibab archery will be bringing 20-25 points in the next few years. Smoke em if you got em cuz there ain’t no saving em.

How long until cards are hit??

I think it’s over. New era of point creep both resident and NR. It creates a snowball. Leftover tags drying up lead to guys changing their app plans which lead to 100% odds tags become not so in a hurry.
