Your buddy with a 243 will do just fine... Many folks shoot more accurately with a light kicking 243 than a larger cartridge they are afraid of! The 95/100 grain bullets are designed for deer/antelope sized critters. My famly has shot a meat locker full of mule deer with a 100 gr Hornady. Out to 400 yds they are deadly, past that the energy drops off a bit... but 400 yards is farther than most folks need to shoot. Good luck and shoot straight! D.D.

Remington .300 Ultra Mag
DesertDweller replied to Simple Hunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have have a 300 RUM since they first came out... I have setteled on the 180 gr Nolser Partition. Remington no longer has the Nosler as a factory round... good thing I have been saving my brass, so now I hand load for it. My buddy likes the 180 gr Sicorro... I bought this for long range work and the 180 has more energy down range. When you hit a buck through the engine room, very little meat is spoiled... hit one in the shoulder... well that's another story. Another important part of taking advantage of all the performance your 300 RUM gives you is your scope. I had a Leupold 4.5-14x50 Tactical modified by Premier Retice with hold over dots to 800 Yds. If I was doing it now, I buy a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x riflescope with the Rapid Z 800 yard reticle. Just remember, you can buy all the stuff... but PRACTICE is the key to long range success! Have fun! D.D. -
Witnessed an Attempted Murder
DesertDweller replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Boys, thier are lots of varmints that deserve that fate inside the city limits as well as in the hills... Some 4-legged and some 2-legged... Great post! Keep up the good work!!! D.D. -
As a general rule, every mile you put between yourself and a road, your competation will reduce by 80%... This rule works all over the West...not just 34A. You just have to be willing and able to do the work. Good luck and shoot straight! D.D.

Happy birthday Amanda !

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY !!! Enjoy the visit with your family! All the Best, D.D. -
I think the poor guy got confused with X-15 and 15x... just a bit of a difference!!!! :>) Back to the 15x... When Swaro brought out the 15x56 is was the end of the 15x porro prism binoculars as a popular glass... Us hunters are roof prism crazy... even if technically the performance is not as good. Being a more "compact" unit has appeal. The old Zeiss 15x60 was by far the best in it's class, followed by the Docter's and the Fuji's... The Fuji's were/are as big as a battle ship and almost as heavy! Unfortinuately the Docter's has thier mechanical problems, while they were optically very good. A used pair of 15x60 Zeiss at a moderate price are a real find... Well worth the investment in my opinion... Zeiss still stands behind them and that can't be said for Docter or Fuji.... Sad but true. When thinking of whipping out that Master Card for a low priced 13/15/16x bino remember... the higher power the binocular the more critical every aspect of material construction and design become...and much less forgiving. You can't buy a Corvette for the same price as a Malibu.... Thier is a difference! D.D.

Zeiss doesn't make them anymore.... :>( I remember when they were over 2 grand at Jensen's.... Buying a pair for $1,000 bucks was a steal! $1,400 is about right when checking out E-bay.... Just my 2 cents... D.D.

I have that one. I think it was labeled as the 190XBProCX or something like that. I will verify once I get home. Very good, very sturdy, very light. I checked, its the Manfrotto 190CXPRO3. Good tripod. The center column can extend all the way up and then be turned horizontal. FLoyd of the Outdoorsman told me about a problem he expereinced with a Carbon Fiber tripod he used on an Alaska sheep hunt... I think in the wind it set up a harmonic vibration... thus, his tripod is not CF... Jim White of Unidaptor is another good guy to talk to about tripods and heads. Jim keep up on all the latest offerings by the different tripod companies. D.D.

Hello Folks, Have any of you folks had any experience with the Leica Grovid or the new Zeiss Range Finding binocular? I am thinking of selling my first born and ordering a pair... <wink> I would like some feedback from those of you who have some experience with them. Please be brutally honest... It's a big investment! Thanks! DesertDweller

CALLING ALL DEMOCRATS
DesertDweller replied to GodIsGood's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Can anyone tell me ANYTHING Mr. Obama has done while in the Senate? Except write books about himself? While McCain and Palin are not perfect... Obama and Biden are worse... and a vote for a third party is a waste. Oh God... who ever said don't discuss religion and politics was right! D.D. -
The Zeiss are 10x45 and the Leica's are 10x42... I don't know of an actual 10x50. The Zeiss has a "Ballistics Information System" built in... I am trying to learn more about it. In the past Zeiss put out some binoculars that left a bit to be desierd compared to Leica and Swaro... but I buddy of mine compaired all three at dusk, and said the Zeiss were the brightest. I want to do the same test. D.D.

I have been wearing Danner Boots since 1980...(Wow am I getting old!) My favorite is the Pronghorn... it fits and feel like a running shoe but is a great boot in the mountains. Has the Gore-Tex liner and a good combo sole for rocks and snow. A blend of Vibram and Bobs... I think SW has them and I know Cabelas does.... A last word of advice, DON"T EVER SCRIMP ON YOUR BOOTS!!! I did once and almost blew out my achilles on both feet, ruined a great hunt and I limped for weeks. All because of cheap boots.... That's what made me pay $180.00 bucks for my first Danners - I wore them only for hunting and they lasted 15 years. Turned out to be the cheapest pair of boots I ever bought... Think about it... Good Luck! D.D.

I have used a Slik Compact XL for years and love it. Not sure they still make this exact model, but they should have something close to it. It's about 16" when closed and 43" tall when fully extended. Weight is about a 1 1/2 pounds... It fits right in a side pocket of my pack and it has a lot of "miles" on it! Good luck in your quest and hunt! D.D.

I know a guy who had a problem with the Leica and when he returned them for repair he got a hefty bill for the repair... Just wondered if this was a fluke or if they had problems. Sounds like he not alone... Has anyone else received a bill for a repair? I have been told the new Zeiss binoculars are super bight... much better binos than a few years back. I haven't had the chance to compair side by side. Thanks for all your info... I appreciate it! D.D.

The Leica has been on the market for a while, any of you folks had any problems with it? I am trying to get more information on the Zeiss unit... they have a cool demo on how the laser works on the Zeiss web sight... FYI...The new long range reticles they have in the riflescopes are interesting also. Looking forward to more feedback! Thanks! D.D.

Thanks for your insight... not carrying two units, a bino and rangefinder sure makes since.... It just the cost that makes me pucker a bit. D.D.
