how quick will deer drop elevation on Kiabab after 1st snow?
PJM replied to apache12's topic in Youth Hunters
I'll also be up there this weekend with my sons. There is ton of deer all around - I wish Couse Bucks were that plentiful and fearless as the Mulley does. 2" of snow should not make a difference. Last year we had the same hunt and it snowed Friday Night. Sure enough the next morning we saw deer. -
I was down in 35A on the Nov 4 th hunt (I was driving a silver Dodge 2500). The weather was rough and the water proofing on my boots failed me. There was 5 of us hunting. We did our part glassing and hiking off the road. We hunted the canyon North of Parker lake for two evenings and walked all the way back. I noticed allot less deer sign then in previous years and the creek bottom was dry. I ran across fresh Mountain Lion and Javalina tracks both days and we only glassed up two does. I talked with other hunters and from what I saw, I believe that the Mountain Lion population took over the area. We also glassed the Lone Mountain area - glassing sheltered slopes from the wind. Nothing! I was really surprised. The only place we saw action was in the draws south of Jones Mesa.

I purchased two Eberlestock packs in the last month the new X3 and the Gunslinger II. I kept the Gunslinger II as it has all the bells and whistles and tons of room to carry out meat. I've hunted three seasons with a borrowed pack and a Kelty outside frame pack. They worked, but what a difference with the new pack. I have taken it hiking and the feel is great and less fatigue after having it on my back for hours. Spend the money and be happy.

I have hunted 35A 3 years in a row and I'm 0 for 3 - all on left-over tags. Awesome place, I was surprised how much water is down there. My advice is go high in elevation. I made the mistake of staring low in the draws. Thick oak brush with allot of does. The bucks always seem to come out at night and I see them as I'm driving back to camp. I've posted a few pics of the area.

joeybari, I've also got the Nov 27th hunt and plan to be scouting the 2 weekends before. Has the unite gotten enough water? AZ has been really dry I hope the deer have faired well. Last year all I got was a skull 7 feet off the ground in a tree left behind by a cougar. The Game and Fish officer I spoke with said it was over a 120 - dam shame! I usually camp at Parker Canyon Lake, look for a Silver Dodge Diesel. Regards, PJM

GR, The AR is an excellent rifle in the field. Look into the 6.5 Grendel. I have been building one for just that purpose. One can load the 6.5 Grendel brass with 123 gr, a perfect round for deer. I have all the parts but the barrel, got crazy and bought a couple shotguns. Now the CFO has me on a diet with my discretionary spending. I guess the 6.5 will be out next season. I hunt 35A and know about the two legged critters. Having the extra rounds is not a bad idea. But in my experience, the boarder crossers want nothing to do with you, they're happy to be headed North. Last year we glassed 4 mules carrying large backpacks, took the GPS coordinates that we passed onto boarder patrol. The officer we spoke to said they already picked up the smugglers. Don't worry, your safe Big Brother is watching! The 308 is awesome, but if you have the bull barrel, it's going to get heavy quick lugging it over the from one glass point to another. Regards, PJM

I got a new Benelli SBE.. at a steal Thanks !

Bear Mountain Rocks.. The customer service is great and they price match and their "make me an offer sale" is hard to beat Try getting that at Bass Pro or Guns ETC. I have been looking for small rifle primers for my 6.5 grendle about 8 months. BM had Federal primers for $42. That's awesome!! Their powder prices are cheaper than I've see at BasPro or Sportsman's. I'd rather spend my $$ with a local shop then one of these big corporation stores in the valley. Regards, PJM

Gents, I have a tikka M695 chambered in 270. I've been loading Nosler 130 and 150 gr ballistic tip bullets with IMR4831. I'm looking at loading the Barns TSX, but their web site does not have reload data using IMR 4831. Has anyone reloaded the Barns bullets with 4831? Please share your recipes. Thanks, PJM

Guys, I just got into reloading and my buddy who hooked me up with and RCBS set up always has used 56-57 gr IMR4831 with Sierra 130 BTS. Being a newbie at this I've taken his wise words and loaded with 4831. What recipes are you guys using? Were have you guys found good deals on reloading supplies? I've been going to BassPro and the Mesa Sportsman's. Cabala's is just too far of a drive. Thanks again for the replies! PJM
