  1. From the sounds of this place, I think using the word "hunting" is a little misleading.......When someone goes and puts birds in a field, for you to turn around 5 minutes later and go out and shoot, it's not hunting in my book. (Although it would be nice if someone would do this for trophy elk. )

    Me & My Son 2011 - 2012 Elk success

Way to go Knight boys! (I'll never forget when you and my dad shot those deer sitting in those lawn chairs up Eagle Creek that one year.) Rusty Martin
  3. Oh, you must be talking about the area out by the "TRW" plant by that dairy. Those were the days........

Daughters first buck with a bow!

Congrads Lance and daughter! There is nothing better than spending time (hunting) with your kids. All your preseason efforts are paying off, again. Great job! It's also good to see you guys are leaving the bigger ones for me in December. (At least the onese that are not already hanging on your wall. ) PS. Seeing you with your kids is making me feel real old! Rusty
  6. I shoot as well. Although, I've not been out much this summer. I'm not a big fan of sitting out in 110 heat for 2+ hrs. I'll start going more when it cools down.

    Custom XDm 4.5" 9mm

hunt4horns - "Some people on this site will always jump in when someone is selling a item and say I can buy that brand new for less then that." Funny you should say that. I've gotten two PM's in the last 24 hrs. from people telling me that exact thing! Obviously they have no idea what a custom trigger job and high-end fiber optic sights cost. Oh well, I guess those type of comments (along with crazy low ball offers) come with the territory when you try to sell something. Thanks to everyone for keeping my add alive...

    Custom XDm 4.5" 9mm

Hum...I guess a 1,000 rounds was too much. He must have been looking for a "Safe Queen". I always find the round count question interesting. What's the point of asking how many rounds??? First of all, anyone can make up a number and you would be very hard pressed to tell by looking at a well kept gun how many rounds have gone through it. 2nd of all, modern handguns are designed to handle THOUSANDS of rounds before they even begin to wear out. (The match grade barrel on this XDm is rated at +30k rounds.) So unless someone has put 50k rounds through it, the chances are that it's going to work just fine. Even then, the parts that do eventually wear out are easily replaceable. ($150 bucks and about 30 seconds to replace the barrel.) It seams to me that a more relevant question/concern would be how has it been maintained and what kind of shape is it in. The answer on this particular gun is: excellent.

    Custom XDm 4.5" 9mm

It's just under a year old. It's in great shape. Ok. Do you know the round count? That would be the most important piece of info for me. I don't keep track of rounds. But if I had to guess, I would say around a 1,000.

Shocking- Big Time Poachers Busted in Kansas

"But are we to believe they would not poach again because well, shoot, they don't have a license." Great point Joeeden. That just like the idiots that say we need stricter gun laws so there will be less gun violence. Criminals don't buy their guns at the local gun shop......

    Unit 1 & 27

Lance, I hope your right. My dad and I both got drawn for elk, me in unit 1 and him in 27. What I worry about is that now that a lot of the habitat has been burned, there are going to be dozens of hunters on top of each other staking out the same unburned patch of forest. I know there are thousands of acres in each of these units, but none the less it going to bunch things up a little...

Wanted: 30-06 or REM 7mm Mag

In the market for an additional gun. Looking for a 'gently used' bolt action 30-06 or REM 7mm mag. Scope not required. Have looked at a lot of used ones but have been a little disappointed in how bad of shape most have been in. I'm looking for something that has been cleaned at least once in the last 10 years.... Prefer synthetic vs wood stock. But willing to consider all offers. PM me if you have something.

    Rio Salado/Usery range

Interesting.... I was there last week as well with my 9 year old son. There were 3 "retired" guys (you know, the Leisure World type) working the range. I overheard one of them say, and I quote "I will be glad when this week is over and all the little kids are back in school. I am tired of all these kids coming out here." I was shocked at his attitude. The kids are the future of this sport and that range. I agree. Things out there have taken a turn for the worse. I never noticed it before. But I also have never seen any of these "retired" guys working out there before. Maybe they need to make some changes in the personalities working out there. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against 'retired' people. But the bunch they had out there the other day seemed to have little patience.

    .243 or 7 mm mag

Nice gun! The finish is very nice. Did you make/finish the stock or purchase it that way? Don't drop it or trip and fall while your out there!

    .243 or 7 mm mag

"Why so angry???? " Who's angry? I'm not. I was just expressing my opinion, which is what he asked for.... I know that my opinion differs from most on this issue. (I am one of the few that would recommend the 243 over the 7mm.) But don't interpret my opinion as anger my friend. Also don't get me wrong, there are always extreme circumstances where a larger caliber gun would be more effective, but those conditions are not the norm. What I'm saying is that in the average situation under average conditions, a 243 would do just fine. If you read most post on this type of a subject, they would want you to believe that under average conditions you would still be better off with the larger caliber. I don't agree. As far as shot placement goes, I also don't believe that it has to be a perfect shot or it will not be a "clean kill" with a 243. That's just not the case at all. Again, another misnomer brought on by the "got to shoot large caliber or your not a real hunter" crowd. In regards to the distance survey. If I recall correctly, I believe they had it sorted by regions of the country. So the deer stand shots did not skew the results.

    .243 or 7 mm mag

It's always interesting when people post threads regarding gun sizes. I think there is a lot of us who are not being honest to our self's about what the real reason is that they bought that mighty 7mm or other large caliber gun. My brother and I hunt Coues with a 6mm and 243 respectively, and have never had any issues with feeling they were undersized. (We both got deer this year.) I think this debate about size is a lot like the situation of the guy who goes to buy a new truck and thinks he needs to have the biggest and baddest engine and 4x4 system available, and then never drives the thing off the pavement and never tows anything more than his small utility trailer to Home Depot to get a sheet of plywood..... But hey, he can tell his friends he's got the HEMI....It's an ego thing, nothing to do with much else. I goto the range all the time and see these guys there with 7mm mags and they can barley hang on to the dang thing as it about knocks them off the edge of their seat. They go through a box of amo just trying to get it on paper, let alone in any type of respectable grouping. I asked one guy what he was going to be hunting and he said COYOTE! As far as "I need to have it for the long range shot" goes, there was a study done by a popular hunting magazine a few years ago and they found that the average shot distance on deer was just over 200 yards; well shy of the 500-600 yard "moon shots" everyone likes to fantasize about. (My deer this year was about 125 and my brothers was less than 100 yrds. Both dropped dead in their tracks with minimal meat damage.) I think shot distance has a lot more to do with laziness and lack of desire to get off ones butt and stock up closer for a higher percentage shot than it does a worry about having an undersized gun. As stated previously, larger caliber does not always equal more accuracy at longer distance. So I'm not sure why everyone seems to feel the need for such a large caliber gun for such a very small animal. We're not hunting elk or elephants here guys. Were hunting an animal that most times weighs less than 100 lbs. Don't get me wrong, I think the 7mm is a great gun and very much has it's reasonable place with the right species of animal. But for Coues, IMO it's way too much. (Notice how many of the posts above talk about "Huge Exit/Entry Holes"....)
